To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LNATHAN MILBIs ABBOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at and whose post-office address is Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safes and Vaults, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful safe and vault practically adapted for banks and commercial houses; and the primary object thereof is to provide a cheap, durable,. and efficient means for preventing access to' the safe by robbers and other unauthorized persons between the hours of closing and opening the establishment.
My invention consists in the peculiar details of construction and novel arrangement of parts, all of which will be described hereinafter, pointed out in the claims, and illus strated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a mechanism construetedin accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same.
In carrying out my invention I first construct the vault or well 1 of masonry and of such size and shape as is best adapted to receive the safe-containin g receptacle 2, which is adapted to be lowered into and withdrawn from said vault or well 1 in a manner to be explained hereinafter. On the top course of the masonry is arranged a base .3, which is preferably constructed of hardened steel or some like material calculated to withstand the ordinary drill and formed with a stepped opening 3, surrounding the vault or well, to receive the stepped top 2 of the safe-containing receptacle. Upon this base is arranged a plurality of uprights or standards 4, connected at their top by a suitable cross-beam or platform 5. Projecting from said platform 5 is a surmounting cylinder or tube 6, formed with a flange G, bolted to the platform and designed to receive and retain the fluid,which may be water, compressed air, or any other suitable medium. The lower end of this tube and the platform are threaded to receive a stuffing-box 7, in which the piston-rod 8 is slidably secured, said piston-rod carrying on its upper end the piston 9, while the lower end thereof is secured to the safe-containing receptacle 2 in any well-known manner.
Adjacent to the tube or cylinder 6 is positioned a reservoir 10, which communicates with said cylinder below the piston head through the medium of a pipe 11 and a pump 12. Intermediate of the cylinder and pump is arranged a stop-cock 13, provided with a combination-lock l3 and constructed so that said cock can not be turn ed unless the combination is set for opening. The pipe 10 leads from the top of the reservoir 10 and communicates with the cylinder a slight distance below the piston when the latter is in normal position, thepurposes of which, will be eX- plained hereinafter.
14 is a turning plug or valve adapted to be operated by a lever 15, to the free end of which is connected a cord or flexible connection 16, running down to the ground and adapted to be operated manually. A spring 16 is arranged on the top of the reservoir 10 and bears against the lever 15 to keep the valve 14 normally closed. As soon as pressure is released upon the flexible connection 16 this lever will be automatically forced up and communication shut off between the reservoir 10 and the cylinder 6 through the medium of the pipe 10.
The operation of the device is as follows: All of the parts being assembled and in position shown in Fig. 1, suppose it is desired to convey the safe-containing receptacle to the vault or well. The operator will pullon the cord 16, thereby causing communication to be had between the cylinder 6 and the reservoir 10. This will permit the fluid to flow from said cylinder into the reservoir and incidentally lower the safe-containing receptacle to position shown in Fig. 2. The time lock-such as, for instance, designated by the reference-numeral17 and which is carried by the top of the receptacle 2will be set so as to be able to project the bolts 18 into the boltholes in the stepped recess in the base surmounting the well, and the safe-containingreceptacle will be securely protected until a prearranged time, when said loek will be adapted to be actuated so as to be able to throw the bolts out of contact with their bolt-holes. It will now be desirable to raise the safe-containing receptacle to a position shown in Fig. 1. The person in possession of the combination which controls the valve 13 can actuate the same so as to be able to open communication between the pump and cylinder and incidentally with the reservoir 10. The pump 12 will be actuated so as to force the fluid from the reservoirinto the cylinder, and thereby raise the piston to proper elevation, and as the piston is connected to the safe-containing receptacle through the medium of the piston-rod 8 the safe-containing receptacle will be elevated to a position similar to that shown in Fig. 1,whereby access to theinterior thereof will readily be obtained. The stop-cock 15 will then be turned off and the amount of fluid in the cylinder will be suffieient to hold the safe-containing receptacle in the desired position. At night or when closing-time arrives it will be only necessary to again pull on the flexible connection 16, so as to open the valve 14, controlled by the lever 15. The fluid will thereby be permitted to flew back into the reservoir 10, and the safe-containing receptacle will be deposited into its well in a manner similar to that above described.
From the foregoing it will readily be seen that I have provided an improved means for protecting safes, one which will be simple in operation, and as the parts are simple the device will not readily get out of order.
WVhile I have specifically described the details of construction and the relative location of the several parts of the preferred form of this device, I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to theexact details of construction shown, but reserve the rightto make such minor changes in the construction as would suggest themselves to the ordinary mechanic and still come within the scope of the claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a well; of a safecontaining receptacle adapted to be lowered into the well, standards adjacent to the well between which the receptacle is adapted to move, a platform surmounting the standards, a fluid-pressure cylinder surmounting and secured to the platform, a pendent piston-rod surmounting and secured to the safe-containing receptacle, having a piston at its upper end working in the cylinder, and means for actuating the piston.
2. he combination with a well, of a cylinder,a platform supporting the cylinder, standards arranged adjacent to the Well and supporting the platform, a fluid-reservoir in connection with the cylinder, a pendent rod having a piston working in said cylinder and connected to a safe-containing receptacle, and a pump interposed between the reservoir and cylinder for operating the piston.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a well, a safe-contain ing receptacle adapted to be conveyed into and out of said well, a cylinder, a piston in said cylinder and connected to said safe-containing receptacle, a fluid-reservoir, com municating pipes leading from said reservoir into the cylinder, a valve arranged in one of the pipes, a pump in the path of the other pipe and adapted to force the piston in the cylinder so as to convey the safe-containing receptacle out of the well, and means connected to the valve in the other pipe so as to release the pressure in the cylinder and permit the receptacle to enter the well.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a well, of a base having a stepped recess surrounding the opening to the well the safe-containing receptacle l1aving a stepped top and normally resting therein, a time-lock carried by said safe-containing receptacle and bolts controlled by the time-lock adapted to engage the sides of the Well, a fluid-pressure cylinder standards for supporting the cylinder arranged adjacent the well, a piston in the cylinder having a rod connected to said safe-containing receptacle, and means for actuating said piston so as to conveythesafe-containingreceptacleinto and out of said well.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a well, of a cylinder, a piston therein, a receptacle adapted to be conveyed into and out of said well, a connection between the piston and the receptacle, a fluid pressure reservoir, a pipe communicating with said reservoir and the cylinder, a valve connected with the pipe and provided with a combination-lock, a pump interposed between said valve and said reservoir, a pipe communicating with the top of the reservoir and with the cylinder below the piston, a valve therein and means for actuating said valve for the purpose described.
