LINA BEEOHER, OF BATAVIA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN MENTS, TO AMERICAN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MONORAILWAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,137, dated March 1 1, 1902.
Application filed July 26, 1900.
To all whom it incur concern:
Be it known that I, LINA BEEOHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Batavia, in the county of Genesee and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Monorailways, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a monorailway system; and it comprises an improvement upon my previous patent, No. 628,174:. Its main features reside in the novel form of wheel which I employ and the adaptability of the same for traction upon my improved rail, (which latter is the subject of a separate patent application presented herewith also, the incorporation and arrangement of such improved rail in the system.
In the drawing accompanying this application the figure is a cross-sectional view illustrating my invention.
In the figure, A indicates my improved traction-rail, which, as seen, is composed of two longitudinal sections with separate bearingsurfaces 0. a and a central channel 12 between them. The rails A are bolted to ties B by bolts b, which also secure the two sections of each rail length together, and the ties are mounted upon and secured to a continuous stringer O, which latter is suitably supported by a convenient structure or. framework D.
E indicates my improved traction-wheel, F the axle therefor, and G a car-body mounted upon said axle. The traction or driving wheels E, as seen, have their peripheral faces formed flat, with a central circumferential rib or convex formation E adapted to enter the channel or concavity in the rail A without contact therewith, whereby the flat surface portions of the wheel alone bear upon the rail-surface. The rib E of the wheel, however, lying between the two sections of the rail prevents lateral displacement and insures the true running.
Serial No. 24,796. (No model.)
Pendently secured to the under side of the ties B, at each end thereof, are auxiliary guide or lateral support rails F of similar construction to the traction-rail A and being connected to the ties in a similar manner by bolts E, as seen.
Guide-wheels G of similar construction to the traction-wheels E are pivotally and yieldingly supported in bearings I-I,'which latter are held by brackets depending from the carbody, the said wheels Gbeing arranged to be in continuous yielding contact with the guiderails F, but such yielding contact being sufficiently stable to support the car laterally when at rest or running at a low rate of speed or when devoid of the equilibrium born of momentum.
' Having now described my invention, I declare that what I claim is- In a monorailway, a continuous stringer carrying ties, a traction-rail composed of two longitudinal sections with an intermediate channel secured by bolts whichunite the railsections upon said ties guide-rails of similar structure pendently secured in the same manner at the under side of said ties, in combination with a car having a traction-wheel whose periphery is composed of separate contacting surfaces for the rail-sections, and has a central circumferential rib to enter the railchannel; also guide-wheels of similar struc* ture pendent from the car and arranged in continuous yielding contact with the guiderails.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LINA BEEGHEE.
