MATTHEW GRISWOLD, JR,
OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
TUMBLING-MACHiNE.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,102, dated March 1 1, 1902.
Application filed July 11,1901. Serial No. 67,844 (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW GRISWOLD, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Penn sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tumbling-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanya ing drawings, and to the letters of reference part of this speciand illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my im-.
proved tumbling-machine with the cover of the shell'opening removed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the shell-frame with the shell and cover therein. verse central section of the mechanism. Fig. at is a plan view of the lower half-section of the removable shell.
In the drawings thus illustrating my invention, A A are supporting-frames provided with shaft-bearings a a, in which hollow journals B 13 are mounted, the journal B being provided with tight and loose pulleys G C. On the inner ends of the shafts B 13 there are flanges or collars D, to which I bolt the ends of a connecting-frame consisting of four curved bars E, E, E and. E forming a skeleton frame. The bars E, E fand E are preferably joined together at the ends into heads F F, so that they form an integral frame joined by bolts (1 to the shaft-collars D D on the shafts B B. Between the heads F F and the shaft-collars D D, I secure perforated plates F, which operate as screens, through which the dust is drawn out of the shell H H,
Fig. 3 is a transhereinafter described, through the hollow shafts B B. On one'side of the heads F, I make a projection f, in which there is a slot f, in which the endsof the removable bar E of the frame are secured by means of boltsf This removable bar E is provided with a central opening G, in which a removable cover G is secured by means of a bar g and bolts g g, which cover is adapted to close a like opening hin the upper half of the removable shell H II. This shell H II is made preferably oval in shape and in two halves adapted to be placed together within the curved bars E, E, E and E which form a frame for supporting the same, the same being capable of being removed by the removal of the section E, as hereinbet'ore set forth, and replaced again and secured in place by replacing and securing the sectionE of the frame in place.
To prevent the sections H H from turning in their supporting-frame, lugs h are cast on the outer surfaces of the sections H H of the shell, which engage the bars E E, 850., as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. To take up any lost motion caused by imperfect casting of the shell-sections H H, set-screws c c are provided in the two bars E and E of the shell-frame, which may be tightened up against the edges of the shell-sections H II, so as to hold them firmly in. place.
Among the advantages of my improved construction it will be observed that the shellsections H II are simple castings, upon which no machine-work is necessary, and as the shell of a tumbler wears out rapidly I can make my shell-sections H H of extremely hard castings, and they can be removed and replaced as frequently as may be necessary without machine-work and without disorganizing the structure beyond the removal and replacing of the frame-section E, which may be speedily accomplished by any ordinary operative.
Having thus shown and described my invention so as to enable others to construct and use the same, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. The combination in a tumbling-machine, of a skeleton shell-frame, with removable half shell-sections therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
screen-plates between the ends of said frame and the collars on the shafts, a removable I5 shell in said shell-frame, and a cover adapted to be secured to one of the skeleton framesections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature :0 in presence of two Witnesses.
