STOVE-DAM PER REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 694,460, dated March 4:, 1902. Application filed July 27,1900. Renewed August 1, 1901. Serial No. 70,501. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARNABAS J CAsrER- LINE, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Olalla, county of Douglas, and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove- Damper Regulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in stove-damper regulators.
The nature and object of the invention will be fully understood from the following general description and the annexed drawings and will be subsequently pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are hereby made a part of this specification, Figure 1 is aview of a stove in elevation with my invention attached hereto. Figs. 2 and3 are detail views of different parts more fully described;
A designates a stove, which maybe of any approved construction. B designates an air-tight air-chamber,which may be located against the wall of the room in which the stove sits, near the ceiling. In this chamber are placed divers upright conical tubes to with their larger ends down.
O designates a cylinder located in the side wall of the chamber 13 andcommunicating with the interior thereof. A piston 0 works in this cylinder. The outer head of't'his cylinder is pierced with the screw 0 which is hollow and embraces the piston-rod 0 throughout the whole length of said screw. Between the piston-head O and the screw 0 is placed the helical spring C embracing the pistonrod 0. The tension of this spring 0 may be regulated by turning the screw 0 The piston O is free to be acted upon by pressure from within the chamber B.
d is a pitman, which is interposed betweenthe piston-rod c and the crank-handle d of the stovepipe-damper. This pitman is pivotally connected with both the piston-rod and the damper-crank. To the outer end of this pitman is also pivotally attached the rod 6..
At its connection with the pitmen this rod e is slightly slotted to allow for the motion to be hereinafter described. To the lower end of this rod e is pivot-ally connected the rod 6, which is supported in upright position by the ear e The lower end of this rod 6' is pivotally connected with the upper end of the short rod c by the joint 6 The lower end of the rod 6 is pivotally connected with the crank i. The shaft I is journaled in suitable hearings on the stove A. On this shaft are mounted the cranks 2' and t". The crank 2' is connected with the rod e, as before described. The crank t' is pivotally connected with the stovedraft damper 'a at 71 In the example of myinvention here given I have illustrated a sliding damper; but it is evident that a damper of any other approved form might, with a slight alteration of the connecting mechanism, be made to serve equally as well.
All the various parts of the mechanism are to be substantially as illustrated in the drawings. r 7
To use my invention, the various parts are to be placed in their proper positions and properly connected, as illustrated in the drawings. A fire is then lighted in the stove. As soon as the air in the lower portions of the room about the stove grows warm it will rise upward toward the ceiling, passing partly through the tubes b. The warm air passing through these tubes will heat the air confined in the chamberB. This confined air so heated will press upon the face of the piston O and cause it to move outward, compressing the springC and carrying with it the piston-rod c, which in its turn moving the pitmen d, and
the crank 01' closes the damper of the stovepipe. At the same time that the stove-pipe damper is thus closed the rods e and e by reason of their connections, as hereinafter described, are raised a little. This turns the crank v), the shaft I, and the crank t". This crank t" by reason of its connection with the draft-damper a causes it also to close, and thus by the outward motion of the piston O the pipe-damper and the draft-damper are simultaneously closed. As soon as, on ac count of the dampers being closed, the heat decreases, the pressure in the chamber B'will also decrease. Then the spring 0 will by its resilience force back the piston toward its original position, and by so doing will reverse the motion just described and open both dampers simultaneously. In this way both the dampers may be simultaneously regulated, so as to maintain a uniform heat in the room as long as the supply of fuel lasts in the stove.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a stove, the pipe thereof, a damper in said pipe, and a crank actuating said damper, of an air-chamber, conical tubes vertically arranged in said chamber, a cylinder in the wall of said chamher, a piston and piston-rod in said cylinder, a screw and spring embracing said piston-rod in said cylinder, a pitman pivotally connecting said piston-rod, and said dampercrank, all shubstantially as and for the purpose set fort 2. The combination with a stove and the pipe thereof, the draft-damper of said stove, a damper in said pipe, and acrank actuating said damper, of an air chamber, vertical tubes in said air-chamber, a cylinder in the side wall of said chamber, a piston and pistonrod in said cylinder, a screw and a spring embracing said piston-rod in said cylinder, a pitman pivotally connecting said piston-rod and said damper-crank, a shaft journaled on said stove, cranks mounted on said shaft, two pivotally-connected rods, connecting one of said cranks with said pitman and said damper-crank, and the other crank on said shaft connected with the said draft-damper of said stove, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
