BUGGY-TOP SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 694,243, dated February 25, 1902.

Beit known that we, ELMER E. BOXLEY and JOE HOLMES, citizens of the United States, residing at Princeton, in the county of Mercer and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in B uggy-Top Supports, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to buggy-top supports, and has for its object to provide a simple device for securely holding, bracing, and supporting a buggy-top when folded back.

One object of the invention is to hold the folded buggy-top securely and prevent lateral sway or vibration thereof, vthus relieving the pivotal connection at the gooseneck from strain and breakage. y

A further object of the invention is to sus` tain the folded buggy-top at an elevation which will prevent the wheels from coming in contact therewith and also protecting the buggy-top from mud and water thrown by the wheels.

By the arrangement hereinafter described the prying off or breaking of the joints of the bows adjacent to the gooseneck is obviated.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

The present invention resides in a strap or holder, of which two are employed iu connection with each buggy. As these holders are ident-ical in construction, it will only be necessary to describe one of them in detail.

The holder is completed by extending the strap downward to form the vertical portion 6, the lowervend of which is provided With an opening adapting it to be fitted over the laterally-projecting arm 7 of the bottom frame of the buggy-top, where it is secured in any convenient manner. The inner face of the loop 4 and the exposed surface of the inclined shoulder 5 are lined or covered by a strip of soft pliable material, such as leather,

said strip being indicated at 8 and serving to prevent marring the finish of the bows and at the same time preventing yany rattling thereof. It will be understood that two of such holders are employed for each buggytop and arranged one at each side or end of the seat for catching the bows as they are lowered. The loops o1' sockets are arranged at such an elevation that they support the buggy-top clear ofthe wheels and prevent mud from being thrown against the bows and top-cover. When the bows are lowered, they are received in the loops, the latter acting to prevent any lateral swaying or vibration of the bows, and thereby relieving the joints of the buggy-top frame adjacent to the lgooseneck at the forward portion of the seat. The holders also prevent the top from being lowered sufficiently to produce any strain on the joint adjacent to the gooseneck.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

l. The herein-described buggy-top support consisting of a metal strap having itsend portions extending at substantially right angies to each other, the intermediate portion being bent to forman oblique loop which inclines outward and downward away from the Ico adjacent end of the seat and forms a socket in which the buggy-top bows are received when lowered.

2. The herein-described buggy-top support 5 consisting of a metal strap having its end portions bent substantially at right angles to cach other and the intermediate portion deflected to form a downwardly and outwardly inclined loop or holder adapted to receive the io bugg 1-top hows when lowered, the loop being extended to forni an inclined shoulder which serves to guide the bows into the socket or loop as they are lowered.
