Y SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 2|?atent No. 694,186, dated February 25, 1902.
l Application lod July 17, 1900. dcrial No. 23,915. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may con/cern:
Beit known that we,GUY BAznLnY Pnrrnn, engineer, residing at Nautilus Works, Yeovil, in the county of Somerset, and ERNEST WIL- LOUGHBY PETTER, engineer, residing at 73 Queen Victoria street, London, England, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating t0 Igniting Apparatus for Internal-Combustion Motors, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to an ignitiug apparatus for internal-combustion motors, and has the object of providing an igniting apparatus of improved construction in Which the combustion of the gas and the products of combustion while being conducted away are utilized in an effective manner to heat the ignition member interiorly and exteriorly.
To this end the invention consists of an igniting apparatus comprising a combustionchamber, an ignition-tube located therein, an
-eXha-ust-charnber connecting said tube and combustion.- chamber forming a continuous channel, an exhaust-valve suitably arranged, and an exhaust-pipe commu nicatiug with said igniting-tube. i
The novel features of construction and combination of parts will be hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side View of an. oil-engine, showing in section the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side View of a modified form of the device detached from theengine. Fig. 3 is a transverse Vertical sectional view thereof on line 6 6, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side View of another modified form of the invention; and Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the same on line 8 8, Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, E designates the ignition-tube, which is arranged in the combustion-chamber D and extends across the same. The ignition-tube E communicates at lone end with the combustionchamber D through the exhaust-chamber Y and connects fat its opposite end with the exhaust-pipe Y. rIhe exhaust-valve Z is provided at the inner end ofthe exhaust-chamber and is operated by a suitable contrivance arranged to coperate with the engine. By this construction the ignition-tube is located wholly in the combustion-chambe r,so that the exterior surface is completelyY exposed to the ame of the burning gas, and thereby exteriorly heated. In order to further heat the ignition-tube the construction provides for the heated products of combustion to pass through the tube in their escape.
opened to permit the escape of products of combustion which pass through the exhaustchamber, the ignition-tube, and the exhaustpipe. Thus in addition to the exterior heating of the ignition-tube by the combustion the exhaust products of combustion heat the same interiorly.
In the modified form of the apparatus, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the ignition-tube F is also arranged in the combustion-chamber D.
4 In this construction the products of combustion pass immediatelyvinto and through the ignition-tube by means of the opening F at one end thereof andthe exhaust-chamber Y at its opposite end. The exhaust-valve Z is provided in the exhaust-chamber and is 0perated in the usual manner. The advantage of this construction is that the productsof combustion are utilized to interiorly heat the ignition-tube while the;7 are at their maximum temperature in escaping from the combustionchamber, and this is secured by providing the opening F' in the ignition-tube, so that the heated products of combustion pass through the ignition-tube before passing through the exhaust-chamber.
The advantages of each construction are their simplicity and the novel construction which combine to produce a superior and highly-eiective ignition-tube heated exteri- Aorly by the combustion of the gas and interiorly by the products of combustion While the heat produced by the combustion is atrits maximum temperature.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with an explosion or internal-combustion motor, of a combustion- After the combustion of thel gas in the combustion-chamber the valve is.
lOO
' chamber, an ignition-tube arranged therein,
and completely exposed to exterior heating,
an exhaust-chamber communicating With the same at one end and With the combustionchamher to form a. continuous channel, a valve suitably provided for the exhaust-chamber, and an exhaust-pipe connected with opposite end of the ignition-tube, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with an explosive or y internal-combustion motor, ot' a combustionchamloer, an ignition-tube Within the same so as to be exterorly heated,l an opening in one end of the same for the entrance of the products of combustion for heating the tube inte' riorly, an exhaust-chamber communicating with the interior of the ignition-tube, and an exhaust-Valve suitably interposed between the ignition-tube and exhaust-chamber, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses.
