CAR-HAUL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 694,047, dated February 25, 1902, Application filed November 25, 1901. Serial No. 83,609. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED M. ACKLIN, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement inCarllauls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to car-hauls, and has for its object to provide a simple and effective device for taking cars from a state of rest or from a slow speed and moving them along.
at a gradually-accelerated speed and to the same speed as the hauling-chain.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved ear-haul,l will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved carhaul. Fig. 2 is aplan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the receiving end of the hauling-chain, showing the device ready to engage with the'car; and Fig. 4: is a like view showing the device in position after it has moved the ear to the hauling-chain.

As illustrated in the drawings, the tracks are shown at 1 and are provided with the portions 2 2 thereon, withthe inclined portions 3 between, and upon these tracks 1 the cars 4: are adapted to travel. Between the inclined portion 3 of the tracks 1 is preferably located the uphaul-chain 5, which is provided with a series of hooks or projections 6 on one side 5 thereof for engaging with a bar 4 on the ears 4 and passes around sprocket-wheels 7 7, which are mounted on shafts 8 8', and said chain 5 being guided by the guide-roller 9, located adjacent to the upper sprocketwheel 7 and mounted on the shaft 10.
Mounted loosely around the shaft 8 for the lower sprocket-wheel 7 is the drum 11, which is provided with the cam-face 12 thereon, and on one side of this drum 11 and connected thereto is located the arm 13, which is also loosely mounted around. the shaft 8 and extends some distance beyond the outer or enlarged portion 12 of the cam-face 12 on the drum 11, as at 13, and this projecting portion 13 is adapted to engage with hooks or projections 6, formed on the other side 5" of i the uphaul-chain 5 and opposite the hooks or projections 6 0n the side 5 of said chain 5.
Extendingpreferably between the portion 2 of the tracks 1 is the sliding or reciprocating frame or bar 14, which is adapted to travel upon slides or tracks 14: by means of rollers 15 thereon and has a yielding hook 16 pivoted in the front end 14 thereof, as at 17, the outer end 16 of which is adapted to project some distance above the bar 1a. Projecting-down from the reciprocating bar 14 is the'lug-18,
which is adapted to be secured to a rope 19, having one of its ends connected to a drum 20 on a shaft 21, while its opposite end is provided with a weight 22thereon, and such rope 19 passes overa sheave 23, mounted on a shaft 23. A smaller drum 2% is mounted upon the shaft 21', and a rope 25 is connected thereto and to the smaller portion 12 of the cam-face 12 on the drum 11.
The use and operation of my improved carhaul are as follows: Power being applied to the upper shaft 8 in any suitable manner will act to turn said shaft 8 and with it the uphaulchain 5,which passes around the sprocketwheels 7 7 on the shafts 8 8, respectively, thereby moving with said chain 5 the wheel 7 and said sh'aft'8 as well as the wheel 7 and said shaft 8. Each of the cars 4 is brought at a slow rate of speed along the portion 2 of the tracks 1, and passing over the reciprocating bar 14: the bar 4 on the cars at will strike the projecting end 16 of the pivoted hook 16 thereon and depress such end 16', so that the car willpass over said end 16 and be brought'to position in front of the pivoted hook 16, and as the uphaul-chain 5 is moving continuously around the sprocket-wheels 7 7' one of thehooks or projections 6' on the'side 5 of said chain 5 will act to engage with the projecting portion 13 on the arm 13, which will cause said arm 13 to revolve in the direcdrum 11 have thus started to revolve by the engagement of one of the hooks or projections 6' on the chain 5 with the end 13 on said arm 13 and one of the cars 4 has passed overthe reciprocating bar 14 and end 16 of the pivoted hook 16 thereon, so as to be brought to a state of rest or is traveling at a slow speed on the portion 2 of said tracks 1, the revolving of said drum 11 and arm 13 engaging with the hook 6 will act to unwind the rope 25 from around the small drum 24 on the shaft 21 and wind the same around the cam-face 12 on the drum 11, so causing the rope 19, connected to the reciprocating bar 14, to be wound around the large drum 20 on the shaft 21 as such shaft 21 and small drum 24 are turned in the direction of the arrow by the rope 25, and thereby movethe bar 14 in the direction of the arrow. As the reciprocating bar 14 is thus moved by the winding of the rope 19 around the drum 20 the end 16 of the pivoted hook 16 thereon will strike against the bar 4 on said car 4 and cause said car to be moved along the portion 2 on said tracks 1 from a statepf rest or a slow speed to a speed grad ually and continually increasing as the rope 25 is wound around the cam-face 12 on the drum 11 and the rope 19 is wound around the drum 20, and when the drum l1 and arm 13 have been raised to the position shown in Fig. 4 the car 4 will have been brought along the portion 2 of the tracks 1 to the uphaul-chain 5 from a state of rest or slow rate of speed by a gradual and continual increase of speed to the speed of the uphaul-chain 5, where it will be caught by one of the hooks 6 on the side 5 of the chain 5 engaging with the bar 4' on said car4 and carried up the inclined portion 3 of said tracks 1 by such hook 6 on the chain 5. After the hook 6 on the chain 5 has engaged with the bar 4 on the car 4 and has started to move said car up the inclined portion 3 of the tracks 1 the hook 6 on said chain 5 will be relieved from engagement with the end 13 of said arm 13 and such arm 13, drum l1, and bar 14 will be pulled back by the weight 22 on said rope 19, connected to the bar 14, which will allow the rope 19 to unwind itself from around the drum 20 and the rope 25, connected to the drum 11, to wind itself around the drum 24, so dropping or lowering the arm 13 and drum 11 down to the position shown in Fig. 3, ready to be again caught by one of the hooks 6 on said chain 5 and bringing the reciprocating bar 14 back to the position shown in said figure, ready to have the end 16 of the pivoted hook 16 on said bar 14 catch the bar 4 on another car 4 for another operation. After the cars 4 have traveled up the inclined portion 3 of the tracks 1 by means of the hooks 6 on the uphaul-chain 5 and have reached the point adjacent to the sprocket-wheel 7 the hooks 6 on said chain 5 will become disengaged from the bars 4' on said cars 4 and such cars can pass along the portion 2 of said tracks 1 to any place desired. As the uphaul-chain 5 is run continuously around the sprocketwheels 7 7, it will be evident that the drum 11 and arm 13 will be raised and lowered through the engaging and disengaging of the arm 13 with the hooks 6 on said chain 5, and that the reciprocating bar 14 will be advanced and receded by the rope 19 connecting therewith and with the large drum 20 and by the rope 25 connecting the small drum 24 with the cam-drum 11, so that such bar 14 will always allow one of the cars 4 to pass over the same and over the end 16' of the pivoted hook 16 thereon and be in position for the end 16' of such hook 16 to engage with the bar 4 on the car to advance the same from a state of rest or slow speed by a gradual and continual increased speed to that of the chain 5 and be caught by the hooks 6 on such chain and carried thereby up the inclined portion 3 of the tracks 1.
It will be obvious that the device for en gaging with the cars to bring them from a state of rest or slow speed by a gradual and continual increased speed to that of the chain can be placed outside of the tracks, if desired, and that under some conditions the 'uphaulchain can be placed to one side or outside of the tracks and the hooks on such chain engage with the axle of the cars, while various other modifications in the construction and design of the various parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
It will thus be seen that my improved carhaul is cheap and simple in its construction and operation, and by its use the heavy strain and jolting to the uphaul-chain and cars is overcome, as well as permitting a greater speed to be applied to the hauling-chain than in the ordinary cases, with the result that a greater capacity may be had from a given weight of chain and power-transmission mechanism.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device for moving cars, consisting of a continuously-moving hauling-chain having hooks thereon for engaging with the car, and mechanism for bringing the car from a state of rest or slow speed by a grad ually-increased speed to that of the hauling-chain to be caught and hauled thereby.
2. A device for moving cars, consisting of a continuously-moving hauling-chain having hooks thereon for engaging with the car, and mechanism for automatically engaging with the car to bring the same-from a state of rest or slow speed by a gradually-increased speed to that of the hauling-chain to becaught and hauled thereby.
3. A device for moving cars, consisting of a continuously-moving hauling-chain having hooks thereon for engaging with the car, and mechanism for engagingwith the car to bring the same from a state of rest or slow speed by a gradual and continual increased speed to that of the chain to be caught and hauled thereby.

A device for moving cars, consisting of a continuously-movinghauling-chain haying hooks thereon for engaging with the car, and mechanism for automatically engaging with the car to bring the same from a state ofrest or slow speed by a gradual and continual increased speed to that of the chain to be caught and hauled thereby.

A device for moving cars, consisting of a hauling-chain passing around wheels mounted on shafts, hooks on one side of said chain for engaging with the car, hooks on the opposite side of said chain, a sliding or reciprocating frame or bar, a yielding or pivoted hook on said bar for engaging with the car, a camdrum loosely mounted around one of said wheel-shafts having an arm connected thereto for engaging with the hooks on the opposite side of said chain from the oar-engaging hooks, and ropes connected to drums and to the said cam-drum and said bar for bringing said car from a state of rest or slow speed by a grad ually-increased speed to that of the chain to be caught and hauled thereby.

A device for moving cars, consisting of a hauling-chain passing around wheels mounted on shafts, hooks on one side of said chain for engaging with the car, books on the opposite side of said chain, a sliding or reciprocating frame or bar, a yielding or pivoted hook on said bar for engaging with the car, acamdrum loosely mounted on one of said wheelshafts having an arm connected thereto for engaging with the hooks on the opposite side of said chain from the car-engaging hooks, and ropes connected to drums and to the said camdrum and said bar for automatically bringing said car from a state of rest or slow speed by a gradually-increased speed to that of the chain to be caught and hauled thereby.
