Description

SAMUEL S. BLISS, OF NEW BEDFORD, MSSC-IUSETTS.
Letters Patent'No, 69,394, dated October 1, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN`ATTAGHING `THILLS TO CARRIAGBS.
TO ALL- WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. BLISsoi` New Bedford, in the county of Bristol, in the Statefof Massachu setts, have invented a new and improved Mode of Attaching` Thills to Carriages; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a. full and' exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,` and to the letters of reference marked-thereon. i
Figure l is a perspective view of my invention), `showing the thill-clipand 'side irons combined, and clearly illustrating' the method of securing the same. Y i
`Figurc''isa plan View of the thill and sideirons attached, the latter having conical centres, which are intended to rest in suitable seats inthe forwardend ofthe clip-iron.
Figure 3 is a transverse section of the clip-iron, with its conical bearings or seats.
- In the construction of couplings for carringc-tliillsit is important to have the bearing or axis of motion thereof'capable of being tightened up, so as to compensate for weer, and thus prevent the rattling noise, so disagreeublefand commonly heard during the rapid' motion of carriages and other vehicles of like character; To accomplish the foregoing great desideratum is the object of my present invention, and it consistsjn a simple und practicable method of securing4 the thill to the clip-iron by means of conical centres and seats, so secured together and adjusted by means of a clamp-bolt, that the wear consequent upon the.continued use of the vehicle can readilyvbe taken up, and thus all the annoyance andditiiculties incident to'a 'loosc coupling are easily removed# To enable-others skilled in thevart to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i i
A is'the.thill, constructed in the usual form and manner. To the thill A, by means of clamp-bolts D D, I secure the two side irons B B. Orf-the rear ends of the side irons B B are welded'two conical centres or beary ings F F, which t and work in suitable sockets'- or seats in the clip-iron. C is theclip-iron, which is fitted or secured to the aile in an)1 usual manner, so that its eye and the sockets or seats shall beabout on a line with the centre of the axle. In the forward extension of the clip-iron C are two sockets or seats E E, of conical or semispherical form, which receive and in which exactly fit and 'easily work the centres or bearings F F of the side irons B B. f
From the foregoing description, the, construction and operation of'my invention will be readily understood. The clip-iron C being secured to the axle, one of the side irons, B, is secured to the thllby the -clamp-beitel) D, which pass through holes arranged in both the thill Aiand side iron B B, the'head ofthe bolt resting against the faceiof the side iron. The tlliil,"with the side-icon thus secured, is brought in contact with the clip-iron C, so that the centre or bearing F will enter the socket orvseat E of the clip-iron C. The other plate B is then in like manner secured to the thill and clip-iron, and rmly'attached to the same by means of the clamp-bolt D.
0u the end of this clamp-bolt D there is cut a screw-thread, on which works a suitable nut. By means of this screw-thread and nut the side irons are always kept in close contact with both the thll and clip-iron, and all wear upon the centres or bearingsF yIl', or sockets or seats E E, can readily be taken up simply by turning the nut .on the bolt D.
Having thus fully described my inv'entiom'fwhat I claim .therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf- 1. Securing the. side irons B B, when the same are constructed with solid conical bearings or centres F F to the thill A by means Aof clamp-bolts D D, or in any equivalent manner, substantially as described.
2. The combination of, the` thill A,` side irons B, having solid conical bearings F and clip-iron C, with its conical socket or seats E E, when the. samc are constructed, arranged,l and operated substantially as described, and Vfor theA purposes set forth. 4
