4 Be it known that I, WARREN MILLER, a citizen of the United States,residing at Murphysboro, in the county of Jackson, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to baling-presses,and particularly to a self-baling device actuated by the plunger of the press.
The invention has for an object to present an improved construction of parts wherein the feed of the bale-tie wire by the movement of the plunger in completing the halo automatically throws into operation the feedingneedle, the holding devices, and the twistingfingers.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of driving mechanism for the bale-tie devices which is adapted to be automatically thrown out of op eration by the plunger-driving meansandinto operation in the rotation of the spool carrying the baling-wire.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of needle for carrying the tie-wire through the bale-box and for severing the wire held by the needle.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined bythe appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a press having the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a partial side elevation with the twisting mechanism removed. Fig. 4. is a vertical section through the bale-box on the line 4; 4. of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a horizontal longitudinal section. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective of one end of a needle, and Fig. 7 is a diagram showing the positions of the tiewire relative to thebale-box and other parts.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The letter A designates a base having thereon a baling-box A, provided with a hopper A beneath which a plunger B, provided with a knife-edge B, is located. This plunger is connected to a driving device by means of the pitman B extending to the crank-arm 13 which is adapted to be driven byany suitable power-for instance, by the application of a lever, as shown at I3 -and is supported by a frame B. All of these parts may be of any suitable construction and configuration, and the base maybe mounted in any desired manner either for transportation or cooperation with an adjacent machine.
The baling-box A is provided at opposit sides with springs A adapted to seat in recesses B, as shown in Fig. 2, when the plunger B passes the springs to hold any baled material which has been forced beyond the springs.
Upon the base of the machine a wire-reel C, carrying the tie-wire O, is pivotally mounted and may be removedby opening the hinged keeper 0 as shown in Fig. 1. The wire 0 is carried through a guide 0 to the needles D, which are intermittently reciprocated to pass the wire across the bale-box. The wire-reel is of suitable diameter to complete one revolution, as each bale is formed in order that the controlling-lever C carried by the axis 0 of the wheel, may engage and operate a releasing device for the driving-shaft, to be hereinafter described.
Any desired number of needles D may be used; but two are here shown mounted in the frame D, which is slidably supported upon ways D and operated by means of a lever D extending from the crank-Wheel D, carried upon the driving-shaft E. This crank-wheel is also provided upon one face with a segmental series of gear-teeth D cooperating with a gear F for actuating the holding devices. The gripping-jaws of these needles comprise a fixed jaw D, upon which a movable cutting-jaw D is pivotally mounted, as at D and the movement thereof limited by a pin D upon the fixed jaw and projections D upon the cutter. The end of the needle is tapered, as shown at D, and adapted to enter a recess G in the cutter-plate G, which forces the jaws of the needle together, thus severing the wire held thereby The plate G is suitably mounted in a fixed position upon the base in alinement with the needles at one extreme of their movement. Lying opposite the holding-wheels and in the path of travel of the'wire twistingrfingers H are provided, one for each strand of wire, and are suitably mounted in a bearing H. The end B of the twistingfingers is provided with a recess to receive the wire, and the opposite end has secured .thereto a pinion H those of adjacent fingers meshing together and with a driving-pinion H carried by a counter-shaft H upon which the driving-gear F for the holding-wheels is also mounted, all of which parts are driven from the main shaft E. In order to drive this shaft intermittently or only after the bale has been formed, thedriving-gear E thereon is adapted to be thrown into and out of engagement with the segmental gear I, carried uponthe drivingwheel'I. The shaft E is provided at its end beneath the baling-box with a tubular portion E adapted to contain a spring E hearing against the end of the shaft E for normally' forcing the gear E into engagement with the wheel I. Any suitable means may be provided for permitting'this longitudinal movement of the tubular-section and shaft. For instance, a pin E may be projected into aslot E formed in the tubular sections. The shaft E is also provided with a shoulder E, adapted to engage a spring-latch J, which may be thrown out of engagement with said shoulder by means of the jprojecting end J, which is engaged by the lever (1 extending The shaft E is also provided with a pIateE secured thereto and adaptedto lie in contact with the apertured shifting lever E pivotally mounted at E and through which the shaft E travels. In the operation of the invention it will be seen that the plunger reciprocates Within the press entirely independent of the other parts, as the driving-shaft for the needle, twisters, and holders is held out of gear with the wheel I by means of a spring J. At such time a single strand of wire extends across the balebox and is held by the wheel F The continued action of the plunger collects the bale of hay and withdraws the wire from the reel, thus carrying the wire forward into the loop, as shown in Fig. 7, which action also carries the strand into the recess of the twister H. The baling action continues until the reel has made one complete revolution, when the arm 0 thereof engages the spring J to release the shaft E and permit the spring E thereof to throw the gear E into mesh with the teeth of the driving-wheel I. Just prior to this action the projection I upon the wheel engages and moves the spring J from behind the gear E. The continued rotation of the power-wheel I now drives the shaft E and the pinion D", by which the needles are reciprocated and a loop of wire carried across the baling-box by each needle. In this movement the wire upon one side of the needle is placed in the holder F and upon the opposite side in the twister H, while in its continued movement the needle passes through the cutter-plate G and severs the wire, thus leaving a completed wire around the bale in position to be twisted and a strand held at one end to be drawn around the bale in the advanced movement of the next bale. As shown by dotted line in Fig. 2, the teeth D upon the crank-wheel D extend only for a part of the circumference thereof, thus permitting the complete movement of the needles in one direction across the box before the holding and twisting devices are actuated. After the bale thus formed is completed by twisting the tie-wire the projection I upon the driving-wheel I engages and shifts the lever E toward the press until the shoulder E engages the spring-latch J, and thus holds the pinion Eout of gear, so that the continued baling action of the plunger may proceed until the arnf C of the reel again engages the spring J.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the details of construction and configuration and also in the assembling and mounting of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims. I
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a baling-press, a plunger and driving means therefor, a wire-reel, a feeding-needle for the wire, a wire-twister, a driving-shaft for said needle and twister, and means carried by said reel for controlling the driving of said shaft from the plunger-driving means; substantially as specified.
2. In a baling-pres s, a plunger and driving means therefor, a wire-reel, a feeding-needle for the wire, a wire-twister, a driving-shaft for said needle and twister, a latch-releasing arm carried by said reel, means for moving said shaft longitudinally, and a latch disposed in the path of said arm for holding said shaft against longitudinal movement; substantially as specified.

In a baling-press, a plunger and powershaft therefor, a wire-reel, a feeding-needle for the wire, a wire-twister, a driving-shaft for said needle and twister, a latch-releasing arm carried by said reel, means for moving said shaft longitudinally, a latch disposed in the path of said arm for holding said shaft against longitudinal movement,,a drivingwheelupon the plunger power-shaft adapted to rotate the driving-shaft for said needles and twisters, and a cam projection upon said wheel adapted to shift the, needle-driving shaft out of contact with said wheel; substantially as specified.
4. In a baling-press, a plunger and powershaft therefor, a wire-reel, a feeding-needle for the wire, a wire-twister, a driving-shaft for said needle and twister, a latch-releasing arm carried by said reel, means for moving saidzshaft longitudinally, a latch disposed in the path of said arm for holding said shaft against longitudinal movement, a drivingwheel upon the plunger power-shaft adapted to rotate. the driving-shaft for said needles and twisters, a cam projection upon said wheel adapted to shift the needle-driving shaft out of contact with said wheel, wireholding wheels, and means driven from the twisting mechanism for actu ating said wheels; substantially as specified.

In a baling-press, a plunger, a driving means therefor, a Wire-reel, means for hold ing the free end of the Wire, a Wire-needle adapted to travel across said'press, twistingfingers at the opposite side of said press from said reel, and means driven from the plunger power-shaft for successively actuating said needles and said twisting-fingers; substantially as specified.
6. In a baling-press, a plunger, a driving means therefor, a wire-reel, means for hold ing the free end of the wire, a wire-needle adapted to travel across said press, twistingfingers at the opposite side of said press from said reel, a driving-shaft provided with a crank-wheel to operate said needles and having a portion of its surface provided with teeth for actuating said holding and twisting fingers subsequent to the first movement of the needle, a spring for shifting said shaft toward the plunger-driving means, a latch for retaining said shaft against such shifting movement, and an arm carried by the wirereel for releasing said latch; substantially as specified.
7. In a baling-press, a plunger, a driving means therefor, a Wire-reel, means for holdingthe free end of the wire, a wire-needle adapted to travel across said press, twistingfingers at the opposite side of said press from said reel, a driving-shaft provided with a crank-wheel to operate said needles and having a portion of its surface provided with teeth for actuating said holdingand twisting fingers subsequent to the first movement of the needle, a spring for shifting said shaft toward the plunger-driving means, a latch for retaining said shaft against such shifting movement, an arm carried by the wire-reel for releasing said latch, a lever adapted to shift said shaft against said spring to throw the sameout of gear, and means carried by the plunger-driving means for automatically operating said lever in the rotation of the shaft; substantially as specified.

In a baling-press, a plunger, a driving means therefor, a wire-reel, means for holding. the free end of the wire, a wire-needle adapted to travel across said press, twistingfingers at the opposite side of said press from said. reel, avdriving-shaft provided with a crank-wheel to operate said needles and having a portion of its surface provided. with teeth for actuating said holding and twisting fingers subsequent to the first movement of the needle, adriving-Wheel for said shaft, a spring for shifting said shafttoward the plunger-driving means, a latch for retaining said shaft against such shifting movement, an arm carried by the wire-reel for releasing said latch, a lever adapted to shift' said shaft against said spring to throw the same out of gear, means carried. by the plunger-driving means for automatically operating saidzlever in the rotation of the shaft, a segmentalsection of. driving-teeth. carried by the wheel upon the plunger-driving means,a gear upon saiddriving-shaft for engaging said teeth, a laterally-movable spring projected into the path of longitudinal movement ofsaid gear, and aprojection carried byrthewheel upon the plunger-driving shaft-for shiftingsaid spring; substantially as specified.
9. In a baling-press, a wire-carrying needle having a fixed jaw and movable jaw pivoted thereto, and means for closingsaid jaws to sever the wire held .thereby at one extreme of the movement of the needle; substantially as specified. t V
10. .In a baling-press, a wire-carrying needle comprising a fixed jaw: andmovable jaw pivoted thereto and provided with a tapered end, and a stop-pin adapted to engage projections from the movable jaw tolimit the movement thereof; substantially as specified.
11. In a baling-press, a wire-holding device toothed wheel adapted to travel over said recess, a sliding bar actuated by a driving-gear,
a projection carried by said bar to engage the teeth of said wheel, and a springfor restoring said bar to its normal position; substantially as specified.

In a baling-press, a wire-reel and wire carried thereby, a traveling needle, a cutterplate at one extreme of the needle movement, a holding device upon one side of said plate, a twisting device upon the opposite side thereof, and means for driving all of said parts whereby a loop of wire carried by the needle may be severed, one portion thereof held and the other twisted to form a bale-tie; substantially as specified.

In a baling-press, a traveling needle device, a twisting device, a driving-shaft for said needle and twisting device provided with a shoulder, a crank-wheel upon said shaft for driving said needle and provided with a series of teeth for driving said twister,a latch-spring for holding said shaft out of engagement with the driving means therefor, a spring for shifting said shaft into engagement with said driving-wheel, a wire-reel, and an arm carried thereby for releasing said latch-spring from said shoulder; substantially as specified.

In a baling-press, a traveling needle device, a twisting device, a driving-shaft for said needle and twisting device provided with a shoulder, a crank-wheel upon said shaft for driving said needle and provided with a series of teeth for driving said twister, a latchspring for holding said shaft out of engagement with the driving means therefor,aspring for shifting said shaft into engagement with said driving means, a wire-reel, an arm carried thereby for releasing said latch-spring from said shoulder, a power-wheel having a series of teeth for driving said shaft during a portion of its rotation, a shift-lever adapted to shift said shaft out of engagement with said wheel, and a projection carried by said wheel for engaging said lever; substantially as specified.

In a baling-press, a plunger and driving means therefor, a power-wheel carried by said means, a wire-reel, a traveling needle adapted to carry wire across the press, a holding-wheel for retaining the free end of the wire, a twisting device adapted to engage a portion of the wire carried by the needle, and a driving device for actuating said needles in one direction, and for driving said holding and twisting devices in the return movement'of the needle; substantially as specified.

In a baling-press, a plunger and driving means therefor, a power-wheel carried by said means, a wire-reel, a traveling needle adapted to carry wi re across the press, a holding-wheel for retaining the free end of the wire, a twisting device adapted to engage a and twisting devices in the return movement of the needle; a cutter-plate adapted to sever the wire carried by the needle, means carried by said power-wheel for throwing the driving means for said needle, holding, and twisting devices out of driving relation, and means for restoring said shaft into driving relation with said power-wheel; substantially as specified.

In a baling-press, a plunger and driving means therefor, a power-wheel carried by said means, a wire-reel, a traveling needle adapted to carry wire across the press, a holding-wheel for retaining the free end of the wire, a twisting device adapted to engage a portion of the wire carried by the needle, a driving device for actuating said needle in one direction and for driving said holding and twisting devices in the return movement of the needle, a cutter-plate adapted to sever the wire carried by the needle, means carried by said power-wheel for throwing the driving means for said needle, holding, and twisting devices out of driving relation, means for restoring said shaft into driving relation with said power-Wheel, a latch-spring for holding said shaft out of gear, and an arm carried by the axis of the Wire-reel for releasing said spring at each rotation of the reel; substantially as specified.

In a baling-press, a plunger and driving means therefor, a power-wheel carried by said means, a wire-reel, a traveling needle adapted to carry wire across the press, a holding-wheel for retaining the free end of the wire, a twisting device adapted to engage a portion of the wire carried by the needle, a driving device for actuating said needle in one direction and for driving said holding and twisting devices in the return movement of the needle, a cutter-plate adapted to sever the wire carried by the needle, means carried by said power-wheel for throwing the driving means for said needle, holding, and twisting devices out of driving relation, means for restoring said shaft into driving relation with said power-wheel, a latch-spring for holding said shaft out of gear, an arm carried by the axis of the wire-reel for releasing said spring at each rotation of the reel, a pinion upon said driving-shaft, a spring-arm between said pinion and power-wheel, and means carried by said power-wheel for shifting said arm out of the path of said pinion; substantially as specified.

In a baling-press, a plunger and driving means therefor, a power-wheel carried by said means, a wire-reel, a traveling needle adapted to carry wire across the press, a holding-wheel for retaining the free end of the wire, a twisting device adapted to engage a portion of the wire carried by the needle, a driving device for actuating said needle in one direction and for driving said holding and twisting device in the return movement of the needle, a cutter-plate adapted to sever the wire carried by the needle, means carried by said power-Wheel for throwing the driving means for said needle, holding, and twisting devices out of driving relation, means for restoring said shaft into driving relation with said power-wheel, a latch-spring for holding said shaft out of gear, an arm carried by the axis of the wire-reel for releasing said spring at each rotation of the reel, a pinion upon said driving-shaft, a spring-arm between said pinion and power-wheel, means carried 'by said power-wheel for shifting said arm out of the path of said pinion, a driving-gear for said twisting device, a counter-shaft having a pinion meshing with said gear, a pinion in mesh with the teeth on said needle-driving device, asliding bar for actuating said holding-wheel, and a projection carried by said last-mentioned pinion for operating said sliding bar; substantially as specified.
