To a, whom it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, ALIDA M. MAROOUX, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Milford, county of Worcester,
State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Automatic Filling-Supplying Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates more particularly to so-called feeler-looms provided with automatic fillingsupplying mechanism to supply a fresh supply of filling prior to the complete exhaustion of filling in the running shuttle, a loom of this type forming the subject-matter of United States Patent No. 648,986. In said patent the means for controlling such mechanism includes a member normally in posino tion to be engaged and operated by a vibrating part of the loom-as, for instance, the weft-hammer-and through a filling-feeler this member is rendered inoperative by the presence and operative by the substantial exhaustion or absence of the filling in the shuttle, afresh filling-supply being provided automatically While there is still remaining in the shuttle enough filling to prevent an imperfection in the cloth being woven. The
0 stoppage of the loom, as by the breakage of a warp-thread, frequently occurs when there is too much filling in the shuttle to be made waste, and it is customary for the weaver to by hand render the controlling means inop- 3 5 erative when he starts the loom after such a stoppage in order to prevent operation of the filling-supplying mechanism before the filling-induced movement of the feeler is established, one or two beats of the lay sufficing after the shipper has been moved into running position.
The present invention has for its object the production of novel means for preventing improper or premature operation of the filling- 5 supplying mechanism when the loom is started, the filling in the shuttle having been partially exhausted, but not to the extent desired or necessary for a fresh supply of filling.
Figure 1 is a top or plan view, centrally broken out, of a feeler-loom provided with automatic filling-supplying mechanism and having one embodiment of my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional detail thereof on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, looking toward the right; and Fig. 3 is an en- ;5 larged detail, partly broken out, of the main novel feature of the present invention, the view being taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 1, looking toward the right.

The feeler-armf f fulcru med on a vertical pivot a and provided at its inner end with a wear-plate 90, and the feeler proper f are substantially as in United States Patent No. 677,607, the feeler intermittingly entering a slot 3 in the front wall of the shuttle-box B and a slot A in the side of the shuttle S (see Fig. 1) to periodically engage and be moved by the filling therein until such filling is exhausted to a predetermined extent.
A member of the controlling means for the filling-supply mechanism, shown as a latch e is pivotally mounted on a latch-carriero fulcrumed on a slide 0 adjacent the guide for the usual slide m, on which the filling-fork m is fulcru med, the weft-hammer WV acting in usual manner upon failure of filling to move the slide m outwardly to operate the knock-off lever 07. n fulcrumed at n on the breast-beam,to thereby release the shipper and stop the loom in well-known manner. This lifting of the latch occurs just before the shoulder ta has moved forward far enough to engage it, and, as in said patent, the latch-carrier is not returned into the position shown in Fig. 2 by the resetting means until after the shoulder tU has passed forward beyond the latch, such lifting of the latch taking place each time the plate 90 is withdrawn from beneath the foot and thereafter the parts will not be reset until the shoulder 20 has moved forward beyond the latch. When the latch is engaged by the shoulder 10 the slide 0 is moved outward and rocks an upturned arm d fast on the rock-shaft d, to rock the latter and effect the actuation of the filling-supplying mechanism.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 3, the holding-plate .N is shown as provided with an upright headed stud d, which is extended through a longitudinal slot 01 in a dog (1*, the said dog having an upturned car (1 which projects in front of the feeler-arm f near its fulcrum, and said dog is extended toward the rear of the loom to form a finger d upturned at its rear end, the said finger passing beneath the arm f and a downturned locking-lug or shoulder 61 (see Fig. 3) is formed on the under side of the dog. A spring 5 is interposed between the head of the stud d and a washer 80, resting on the top of the dog, to press the latter down toward the top of the holding-plate. The forward end of the dog projects across the shipper-slot 10 0 in the holding-plate and has a bevel or cam face (1 adapted to be engaged by the shipper when the latter is thrown to the right (viewing Fig. 1) to start the loom, sliding the dog back. This movement of the dog acts through the car 61 upon the arm f to swing the latter toward the lay, withdrawing the block 90 from beneath the foot 0 so that the latch will be moved into inoperative position, as has been described, and when the dog has been slid back as far as possible by such movement of the shipper the locking-shoulder d will drop over the rear vertical edge of the holding-plate, and the dog will thereby be retained in such position, the arm f being maintained in its rearward position and the latch inoperative while the dog is locked. Now when the loom has been started,the shipper being in its holding-notch, the forward movement of the lay will, in the present embodiment of my invention, bring the top of the front wall 19 of the shuttle-box B beneath the upturned finger d of the dog, so that the latter will be tilted against the stress of the spring 8 as the lay beats up to thereby lift the locking-shoulder 01 above the rear edge of the holding-plate, releasing the dog and arm f and relieving the member c from the control of the dog. The spring tends to maintain the arm f in the position shown in Fig. 1, and as soon as the dog is unlocked, as has been described, the spring will act through the arm f to return the dog to the position shown in Fig. l and in full lines in Fig. 3 after the foot 0 has been lifted by resetting means, as in Patent No. 648,986, such lifting of the foot being effected after the shoulder ta has moved forward beyond the latch. It is well known that when a loom is running regularly the lay will move on each forward beat farther toward the front of the loom than it will on the first forward beat or two after the shipper has been moved to throw on the power, and this slight difference in stroke has proved sufficient to prevent the proper action of the feeler when the fillingin the shuttle has been woven off to a considerable extent under the conditions hereinbefore specified. The loom will have attained sufficient headway to insure, proper filling-induced movement of the feeler when the dog is unlocked or released, as has been described, and thereafter the member o will be controlled by or through the feeler.
The invention herein described obviates the hand movement of the arm f when starting the loom, and premature or improper operation of the filling-replenishing mechanism is thus automatically prevented.
When the shipper is automatically released fromits holding-notch to effect stoppage of the loom,it pushes the dog rearwardly, and the latter will be locked but it is immediately unlocked on the next forward movement of the lay and restored to normal position, as before specified, by the action of the arm f.
A shallow recess or groove 61 is shown in Fig. 3 in the top of the holding-plate to be entered by the bottom of the lug or shoulder cl when the dog is in normal position, preventing accidental derangement thereof by the vibration of the loom.
My invention is not restricted to the precise construction and arrangement herein shown and described, as the same may be modified or rearranged in various particulars without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a loom provided with automatic filling-supplying mechanism, a controlling member therefor rendered inoperative by the presence and operative by substantial absence of filling in the shuttle, a device actuated by or through starting of the loom to automatically render said member inoperative, and a moving part of the loom to subsequently re lieve the controlling member from control of said device. I
2. In a loom provided with automatic filling-supplying mechanism, a controlling member therefor rendered inoperative by the presence and operative by substantial absence of filling in the shuttle, means operated by starting of the loom to automatically render said controlling member inoperative, and separate means to subsequently release said member from the control of the first-mentioned means.
3. In a loom provided with automatic. filling-supplying mechanism, a controlling member therefor rendered inoperative by the presence and operative by substantial absence of filling in the shuttle, self-locking means actuated by starting of the loom to automatically render said controlling member inoperative, and a moving part of the loom to subsequently unlock said means and release the said member from control thereby.
4t. In a loom provided with automatic filling-supplying mechanism, a controlling member therefor rendered inoperative by the presence and operative by substantial absence of filling in the shuttle, a device actuated by starting of the loom to render the controlling member inoperative and retain it in such position, and means to release said device after the loom has started and thereby relieve the said member from control thereof.
5. In a loom provided With automatic filling-supplying mechanism, controlling means therefor, including a member rendered inoperative by the presence and operative by predetermined exhaustion of the filling in the shuttle, a shipper, a dog actuated by movement of the shipper to running position to render said member inoperative, a catch to lock the dog when so actuated, and means to automatically unlock the dog after the loom has started and thereby relieve said member from the control thereof.
6. In a loom provided with automatic filling-supplying mechanism, controlling means therefor, including a member moved into inoperative position by filling-induced movement of the feeler, a feeler intermittingly moved by or through the filling in the shuttle until said filling is exhausted to a predetermined extent, a device operated by starting of the loom to act through the feeler and render said member inoperative, and a moving part of the loom to automatically release the feeler from control by the dog when fillinginduced movement of said feeler is established.
7. In a loom provided with automatic filling-supplying mechanism, controlling means therefor, including a member moved into inoperative position by filling-induced movement of the feeler, a feeler intermittingly moved by or through the filling in the shuttle until said filling is exhausted to a predetermined extent, a shipper, a self-locking dog, operated by movement of the shipper to running position to act upon the feeler and render said member of the controlling means inoperative, and means to automatically unlock the dog, and thereby relieve the feeler from its control when filling-induced movement of the feeler is established.
