Be it known that we, FREDERICK JAMES MCINTOSH and WILLIAM THORNBURGH, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit,
county of WVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Producing Seamless Metallic Tubes; and we declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
r5 This invention relates to new and improved machinery for producing seamless metallic tubes; and it consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illus- 2o trated in the accompanying drawings, in

Fig. 2 is a view in perspective, a part of the top and side of the housing being 2 5 removed, showing the position of the top and bottom rolls and the general construction and arrangement by which the varyingadjustment of the rolls horizontally and vertically may be made. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the lower portion of the housing, omitting the side rolls, showing elongated concentric slots and bolts, whereby the top or upper portion of the housing may be adjusted horizontally and also the rider and its bearings for the lower roll. The figure also shows the elongated concentric slots in the lower portion of the housing to permit horizontal adjustment. More particularly the invention relates to machinery for producing seamless metallic tubes, in the operation of which a solid billet of metal is passed between the faces of ro- 6o tating bodies, rolls, spheres, or disks, from which the billet receives both a rotary and a longitudinal movement and by which action said billet is' converted into a tube or analogous hollow body by being forced over a mandrel lying in the axial line of the travel of the billet.
One object of the invention is to regulate the feed imparted to the billet by a varying uniform adjustment of the rolls, spheres, or disks, obviating the necessity of any slip of the billet or any twist of the metal, so objectionable in other machines of this class, any such slip of the billet or twist of the metal being especially objectionable byreason of their tendency to impair the metal.
The invention is designed to simplify and perfect the construction and operation of machinery of this class and also to obviate the necessity of guides to carry the billet centrally on its axial path by placing the rolls, spheres,
or disks one above the other and using roller side guides of dimensions suitable for allsizes of billets within the capacity of the machine.
Broadly stated, the invention consists in the combination of two rotary members-such as rolls, spheres, or disks.the axes of which have a varying adjustment, while the center or contact line never changesits position, said center or contact line being always the same and central to a line square across the center of each roll, sphere, or disk, which is the center of the point of contact. A variation of diameters of solid billets within the capacity of the mill is provided forby mechanism for raising and lowering the top roll, still maintaining the position of all center lines,
as hereinafter described. The general fea tures of various machines of this class for the manufacture of tubes from solid billets by forcing the billets into tubular form over the mandrel while hot are well known to those skilled in the art and may be properly referred such portions of a machine for making tubes' as is suflicient to explain the invention.
In carrying out the invention, a represents any suitable lower supporting base or housing, and b any suitable upper supporting frame or housing adjustable upon said base, the lower rolling body being indicated at c and the upper rolling body at d. The bearings for the axis of the lower roll are indicated at e and the bearings for the axis of the upper roll atf. The bearings for the lower rolling body are supported upon an adjustable bed plate or rider g, said plate or rider adjustable upon a stationary bed h, the one being provided with bolts t', projecting into elongated concentric slots, (indicated atjj, Fig. 2.) The bed-plate g, with its bearings e for the lower roll, constitutes a rider adjustable upon a stationary bed h of the housing. The bed-plate g may, however, have a variable adj ust-ment upon the bed h in anysuitable manner. The rider and the stationary bed therebeneath are preferably constructed of male and female castings, the lower casting or bed h preferably constructed with an inner circular edge (indicated at the numeral 10) projecting into an annular recess 11 in the bed-plate of the rider, the edge of said recess (indicated at 12) and the corresponding edge 10 of the bed being accurately fitted the one to the other, so that the rider may be accurately adjusted horizontally and held in any given position by means of the bolts 2', projecting into the elongated concentric slots j, the adjacent edges of the rider and of the bed being on a circle. The base 7c of the upper portion or housing b is engaged with a supporting-bed Z,
forming the upper portion of the lower sup-- port a, by means of bolts m, engaging in elongated concentric slots n, the bolts m being preferably engaged with the portion 7c of the upper housing I) and the elongated slots n being formed in the bed Z of the lower supporting-housing a. The base 7c of the upper portion of the housing, with the bearingffor the axis of the upper roll, forms a carrier. The carrier and the bed Z are also constructed of, male and female castings, the bed Z projecting, as indicated at 13, into a recess, (indicated at 14,) the edge 15 of the carrier and the adjacent edge 13 of the bed being constructed on a true circle, permitting the horizontal oscillation of the carrier, which may be permitted by means of the concentric circular slots 72 and the bolts m, engaged in said slots, and whereby also the said carrier may be held in a given position, the rider of the lower housing and the carrier of the upper housing eachbeing thus constructed to move in the arc of a circle.
The top portion of the framework or hous ing, with the upper roll carried thereby, as well as other related features of theinvention, can thus be adjusted horizontally,as required. \Vith the bearings ff of said carrier are on gaged adjusting-screws p p for adjusting the upper roll (1 vertically. These ad j ustingscrews p 19 may be actuated in any suitable manner-as, for example, said adjustingscrews may each be provided with a-pinion q, with which meshes a corresponding gear 0" upon an operating-shaft s, driven in any'suitable manner, as by a hand-wheel Z. By the mechanisms already described it is obvious that the upper rolling body can be adjusted both horizontally and vertically to any desired angle, the adjustment of the roll regulating the feed of the billet by the spread of the axes of the two rolling bodies from the axial line orcentral pass of the billet. As indicated in Fig. 8, this axial line or central pass of the billet is indicated by the numeral 1, the longitudinal center line of the lower roll by the numeral 2, the longitudinal cen It should be understood that the invention is not limited to any particular mechanism for vertically adjusting the upper roll nor to any specific mechanism for the horizontal adjustment of the rolls, as these movements may ICC be secured by any suitable appliances within the scope of the invention. 7
The rotating bodies are designed to be rotated in the direction of the arrows (indicated more particularly in Fig.7) by the transmission of power thereto from any suitable source of power, (not shown,) as said rotating bodies may be actuated by any suitable means within the scope of the invention. Both the top and bottom rolls are alike adjustable hori zontally, while the top roll is also adjustable vertically; but it will be understood that by the changes of adjustment the contact center (indicated by the numeral 7)remains the same and provided for different diameters of billets, the spreading of the axial lines 2 3 being enlarged or diminished by means of the adjusting mechanisms above described.
The numerals 8 and 9 indicate the roller side guides on either side of the billet. These guide-rolls are each preferably held in a sliding frame, (indicated at 16,) each having engaged with its outer end an adj listing-screw, (indicated at 17,) a graduated scale (indicated at the numeral 18) being provided,and whereby the guide-rolls may be accurately adjusted. The adjusting-screws may work separately or they may be so connectedas to work synchronously, as may be preferred.
While we have described our invention as pertaining to machinery for producing-seamless metallic tubes, we would have it understood that we contemplate as coming within the scope of our invention the employment of the said machinery for any other purposes to which it may be found adapted. The machinery may be used for a variety of purposes,,not only for manufacturing seamless metallic tubes, but also for the construction of hollow car-axles and other analogousbodies. We would have it understood, therefore, that our invention contemplates the employment of the machinery for the purpose of putting a hole through the center of a round bar for any desired purpose.
The roller side guides 8 and 9 preferably taper and are reduced at one extremity thereof, as shown, to permit the extension of the billet, as the billet works better where it extends a little thus.
The mandrel may be supported and operated in any suitable manner. The sliding frame 16 may be of any desired construction.
What is claimed as the invention is 1. In a machine for making seamless tubes from metallic billets, the combination of a stationary bed, alower supporting-base oscillatory upon said bed, an upper supportingframe oscillatory upon said base and rotatable rolling bodies carried by saidbase and frame, respectively, the axes of said bodies being horizontally adjustable by the oscillation of said base and of said frame.
2. In a machine for making seamless tubes from metallic billets, the combination of a stationary bed, a lower supporting-base oscillatory upon said bed, an upper supportingframe oscillatory upon said base, rotatable rolling bodies carried by said base and frame, respectively, the axes of said bodies being horizontally adjustable by the oscillation of said base and of said frame, the rolling body carried by said frame being also vertically adjustable.
8. In a machine for making seamless tubes from metallic billets, the combination of astationary bed, a lower supporting-base oscillatory upon said bed, an upper supportingframe oscillatory upon said base, rotatable rolling bodies carried by said base and by said frame, respectively, bearings supported upon said base to carry the lower rolling body,'bearings supported upon said frame to carry the upper rolling body, and means to vertically adjust the bearings of the upper rolling body.
4:. In a machine for making seamless metallic tubes from metallic billets, the combination of a stationary bed, a lower supportingbase oscillatory upon said bed, an upper supporting-frame oscillatory upon said base, and rotary rolling bodies carried by said base and by said frame, respectively, said stationary bed and lower supporting-base constructed with male and female members,wherebysaid base may be moved horizontally in the arc of a circle, and said base and said frame constructed with male and female members whereby said frame may be moved horizontally in the arc of a circle.
5. In a machine for making seamless tubes from metallic billets, the combination with a lower oscillatory supportingbase provided with a bed at the upper end thereof, of an upper supporting-frame provided with a base having an oscillatory engagement with the bed at the top of said base, and rotary rolling bodies carriedby said base and by said frame, respectively.
6. In a machine for making seamless tubes from metallic billets the combination of astationary bed, a supporting base oscillatory upon said bed, a supporting-frame oscillatory upon said base, rotatable rolling bodies carried by said base and frame respectively, having their axes adjustable by the oscillation of said base and frame in a horizontal plane from the axial plane of the travel of the billet without changing the contact centers of said bodies, and roller side guides carried by said base on either side of the path of the billet.
