APPARATUS FOR BORING WELLS BY PERCUSSION.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofletters Patent NO. 692,645, dated February 4, 1902.

To alt whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT FAUoK; J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mareinkowice, in the Province of Galacia and Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Boring Wells by Percussion; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an apparatus for boring wells by percussion and with the aid of a stream of flushing-water flowing downward through a tubular drill and ascending through the tubing of the well. As said drill works within the flushing-water, which opposes to its movements a resistance proportionate to the square of the velocity of the drill, the loss of the work spent in raising the drill, and thereby giving it potential, will be greater the higher the drill is raised for every blow. Consequently for the sake of utilizing the power expended in boring the drill the samemust be operated with a rapid succes-v sion of blows of but little throw. For this reason my invention comprises a rig in which the walking-beam has its load-arm connected with a spring balancing the weight of the drill-rods and is operated by mechanism from an eccentric shaft.
The specific purpose of my invention is to provide for the direct suspension of the weight of the drill-rods by means of one or more springs connected with and located above the load-arm of the walking-beam, so as to securely balance and unload all parts of the working plant.
In order to make my invention fully understood, I shall hereinafter describe the same in detail, with reference to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a wellboring apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig.
3 is a detail view of the spring-casing, connecting means, and the means for adjusting the springs; and Fig. 4 shows the cam-shaft detached from the machine.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents a walkingbeam adapted to oscillate around the axis 2 in the supporting-frame 3. As the balancing of the weight of the drill-rods by a counterweight secured to the load-arm of the walking 5 5 weight by means of one or more soft springs.
It is desirable also to directly suspend the weight of the drill-rods by means of springs connected with and located above the loadarm of the walking-beam, so as to perfectly balance the parts of the working plant; and 65.
to this end it will be seen that I provide a casing 4:, which is connected at its lower end by meansof a yoke 5, swiveled to said casing,
with the load-arm of the walking-beam and is provided at its upper end with a cap or cover 6. A rod 7 works loosely through this cap or. cover and extends into the casing 4, and at its lower end carries a head or disk 8, forming the abutment of a series of volute springst). Theupperendofthe rod7isscrewthreaded and projects upwardly through a nut or screw-threaded bearing 10 upon the upper portion of the frame 3 directly above the outer end of the load-arm of the walkingbeam 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. construction the rod 7 may be adjusted as desired to put the springs in tension, so asto enable them to accumulate the work performed by the weight of the rods while these latter descend and to virtually carry out the direct suspension of the weight of the drillrods.
The purpose of swiveling the yoke 5 to the casing 4 is to allow the yoke to have the necessary independent play, so as to obviate lia- 9o bility of turning of the casing and binding of the parts contained therein.
The walking-beam is oscillated through the medium of a double eccentric shaft 11, journaled in the frame and having a central eccentric head 12 of large diameter and on opposite sides of the latter similar eccentric heads 13 of the same diameter. Connected to the eccentric head 13 are links or connecting-rods 14, which are journaled. at their upper ends to a cross bar or rod 15,-mounted ina block or bearing 16, connected to the power-arm of the walking-beam 1. The purpose of these connecting-rods is to communicate short strokes By this So to the walking-beam 1.
WVhen it is desired to employ longer strokes to adapt the device for use in connection with any kind of percussion-drill, the connecting-rods 14 are re moved and a connecting-rod 16 (shown in broken lines in Fig. 2) is connected with the cross bar or rod and eccentric head 12 on the shaft 11, so as to be operated by said eccentric to impart a correspondingly-greater movement to the power-arm of the walkingbeam. A fly-wheel 17 of ordinary construction is mounted upon one end of the eccentric shaft 11, and power may be applied to said shaft in any desired manner.
Upon the load-arm of the walking-beam 1 a pulley or sheave 18 is mounted. The suspension-rope 19 of the drill extends from a Windlass 21, which admits of its being lengthened and shortened, and runs over a guidepulley 22 to the raising and lowering pulley or sheave 18. In consequence of the tension of the rope 19 the load-arm of the walking-beam 1 is held down against the tension of the springs 9 and the weight of the drill-rod directly suspended from said springs. By thus directly suspending the weight of the drillrods from the springs 9, which are connected with and located above' the load-arm of the walking-beam, a smooth and easy action of the parts is insured and the Weight of the load on theload-arm is compensated for in a simple, advantageous, and eifective manner.

In a well-drilling apparatus employing a percussion-drill,the combination with a frame or support; of a walking-beam fulcrumed thereto, an operating-shaft having eccentric heads of different diameters, arod mounted upon the power-arm of the beam, variable connecting-rods for connecting said eccentric heads with the said rod on the power-arm on the beam, whereby long or short strokes may be imparted to the beam, a suspension-rope connected with the load-arm of the beam for suspending the drill-rod therefrom, a casing located above the load-arm of the beam, a yoke engaging the load-arm of the beam and swiveled to the casing, a screw-threaded bearing mounted in the frame above said casing, one or more soft suspension-springs inclosed within the casing, and a rod having a head forming an abutment for the springs and a screw threaded exteriorly projecting end working in said bearing, whereby the tension of said spring or springs may be varied, substantially as described.
