UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK O. IVOLFR OF LAJUNTA, COLORADO.
SCISSORS-GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 692,578, dated February 4, 1902. Application iiled July 9, 1901. Serial No. 67,621. (No modeLl' To all wiz/m t may concern/r Beit known that LFRANK C. WOLEE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Lajunta, in the county of Otero and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scissors-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to scissors-gages; and the object of the same is to construct a device of this character which can be attached to a pair of cloth-scissors and serve as a guide and gage in cutting.
The novel construction devised by me is fully described` in this specification and claimed, and illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my device attached to a pair of scissors. Fig. 2 is an edge view, partially in section, o f the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective with parts separated.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different views of the drawings The numeral 1 designates a gage-frame having side bars 3 and 4 and cross-bars 5 and 6.
The cross-bar 5 is provided with a ange 7, apertured at 8 to accommodate screws 9 for attaching the device to the lower blade 10 of a pair of scissors 11. The rear side bar 3 bears a scale formed of a series of equidistant graduations 3, corresponding to linear measure and which serve to measure the cloth.
Formed integral with the outer cross-bar 6 is a guide-plate 12, which is bent over and extends parallel to the plane of the frame 1. The guide-plate 12 is of less width than the frame l and is traversed longitudinally by a slot 13. A slide 14 is mounted between vthe frame 1 and the plate 12 and comprises an upper plate 15 and a lower plate 16, secured to the upper plate by screws 17. The underside of vthe plate 15 is cut away at 18 to accommodate the side bars 3 and 4, which serve as guides for the slides. The guide-plate 12 also serves as a guide for the slide 14 and fits a notch19 in the ders 2l thereon, fits a threaded aperture 22 in the slide 14 and is designed to act as a clamp for setting the slide at any desired point. By this arrangement the slide 14 is held firmly against wabbling. It should be noted thata small space 23 intervenes between the end of the guide-plate 12 and the scissors-blade to permit the cloth to be withdrawn from between the gage-frame and guide-plate.
In operation the screw is loosened and the slide slipped along until` the distance on the scale from its inner end is equal to the width of the strip which it is desired to cut, when the screw 20 is screwed up tight. The
blades and inserted'at 23 until the edge contacts with the slide 14, after which the scissors are operated, all the'time keeping the slide 14 and edge of cloth in contact.
construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my' invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is- A In a device of the class described the combination of a gage-frame having parallel side bars and provided with means for attaching it to a scissors-blade, one of said bars having a scale thereon, a guide-plate parallel to said gage-frameand having a slot therein, a slide mounted between said gage-frame, and guideplate,1and a set-screw mounted in said slot and constructed to clamp said slide, substantially as described. l
"In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of twov subscribing witnesses.
