Be it known that I, SAMUEL BoTToMLEY, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Bandage-Cases and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in bandage-cases; and it consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the case, by which both sides may be used in succession, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.-
In the class of bandages to which this invention is applicable an absorbent material, which may have absorbed moisture or medicated liquid or be used in the dry state to absorb pus or other discharges, is placed, preferably, into a tubular textile fabric having large openings on one side and a closely woven or knit fabric on the other side, so that fluid may be applied to or absorbed from the part to which it is applied.
The object of this invention is to construct the case or receptacle for the absorbent material so that both sides of the bandage may be successively used.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bandage-case, showing the reversible cover connected at one edge to the tubular case. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the case.
In the drawings, A A indicate the central open-mesh portions of the fabric; B B, the opposite sides of the fabric, in which the threads are closely packed, so as to form a practically impervious fabric; 0, a strip of fabric in which the threads are closely packed, so as to be practically impervious to serum Serial No. 678,847. or similar fluid. The strip 0 is connected along one edge to the case and may be folded over either side of the case, consisting of the two sides, having each the central portion A of open-mesh fabric and the-closely-packed side strips B B.
The complete bandage-case, as shown in the drawings, may be produced by knitting or weaving. If woven, the covering-strip C may be made of one or two ply. When used as a compress, the bandage may be first applied on one side. The moisture of the absorbent material in the bandage will readily pass through the open meshes A A to the parts to which it is applied, and the covering-strip 0 will protect the other side. The bandage may then be reversed by placing the covering-strip C over the side first used and applying the other side to the part of the body affected, or the reversible bandage may be used to absorb fluid first on one side and by reversing the covering-strip on the opposite side. Under many circumstances the double use of the reversible bandage is a great convenience.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a bandage-case, the combination with a casing having two sides, the central portions A A which are formed of large, open meshes and the edges B B of closely-packed textile threads,of the reversible covering-strip 0 connected at one edge with the case; whereby the covering-strip may cover one side when the other is in use and vice versa, as described.
