UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RIDGWAY S. PICKERING, OF SHARONHILL, PENNSYLVANIA.
COTTER'PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,730, dated January 21, 1902,
Application tiled April 29, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itkuown that I, RIDGWAY SPICKERING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sharonhill, county of Delaware, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cotter-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement incotter-pins, and relates more particularly to the points of said pins,-and has for its object to form a point upon the pins which will enable the pins to be easily inserted 4 through a hole and also by beveling the inner face of the point of each member of the bent so as to form pin, so that when they are togetherit will form a V-shaped notch in which to insert an instrument to separate the points; and a further object of my invention is to form the points in such a manner that these points can be formed by dies while the pin is in the blank form.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the pin inserted through a hole; Fig. 2, an edge view of the pin; Fig. 3, an end view of the pointed end of the pin; Fig. 4, an elevation of the rounded side of the pin in the blank form; Fig. 5, a side view of the blank after the points have been cut, and Fig. 6 an elevation of the fiat side of the pin in blank after the points have been out.
' In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the cotter-pin, which is the usual eye B at the top, and before the pin is bent in the shape shown in Fig. 1 the blank is inserted between two sets of dies, which dies will form the points by one set of dies beveling off the rounded side of the blank upon each edge, asindicated at D. The other set of dies will operate upon the dat side of the blank at the same time as the other dies and bevel off the ends of this iiat side upon each edge, as indicatedat E. Thus these two sets of bevels upon each side of the point of the end will form points, and
Serial No. 58,036. (No model-l thus present a bevel surface in all directions' to the hole through which the pin is to be inserted, which will greatly` facilitate the inserting of this pin in the hole, E upon the dat surface upon each point of the pinA will when the points are brought together form a V-shaped notch, which will allow a pointed instrument to be inserted between the points of the Cotter-pin for the spreading the same. f
I am aware that the points of Cotter-pins havebeen beveled for the purpose of facilitating the inserting of the pin within the hole and also that notches have been formed between the two members of the pin upon the end for the purpose of facilitating the spreading of the same; but these beveled surfaces and the bevels purpose of and also the notch have always been so formed that that bevel and notch will have to be made by milling or filing; but by forming the point of the pin asI do the point can be formed by dies, and thus both points can be punched out inv one operation, which will greatly facilitate the manufacturing of the pins and also greatly cheapen the cost of manufacture, and by forming the pin as Ido it will make abetter point forinsertion through a hole, and the notch formed between the points by extending along the side the points allows for a better insertionl of a tool for spreading the same.
Having thus' fully described my invention, what I claim as newand useful is v 1. As a'new article of manufacture, a cotter-pin comprising a strip of metal having flat and rounded sides, the said strip being bent on itself to form a loop with the flat portions contacting, the ends of the pin on the rounded side being beveled, the said beveled portions of` the rounded side intersecting, the said flat side being also beveled from opposite edges intersecting centrally its width, substantially as described.
2. In a Cotter-pin, a strip of metal having- RIDGWAY S. PICKERING.
