Be it known that I, HENRY BARDSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Loom-Shuttles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to the devices which are employed in loom-shuttles for the purpose of ascertaining when the yarn-load which is carried by the working shuttle of a loom has become exhausted or depleted to the predetermined extent and for the further purpose of calling into action instrumentalities for bringing about a prearranged change in the working of the loom.
The invention consists in improved devices of the said class and first will be described with reference to the drawings, in which latter is represented an embodiment of the invention, after which the characteristic and essential features of the invention will be particularly pointed out and distinctly defined in the claims at the close of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows, mainlyin plan, part of a loom-shuttle having an embodiment of the invention applied thereto, a portion of the shuttlebody being broken away adjacent the trip. Fig. '2 is a side elevation of the same, one side of the shuttlebody being broken away for part of its length.
Having reference to the drawings, 1 designates the shuttle-body, onlya portion thereof being shown. I
2 is a wound yarn-load in the shape of a cop, which is shown located within the main cavity or the yarn-receiving chamber of the said shuttle-bod y. I provide the shuttle with a movable follower, making contact with the exterior of the yarn-load and controlled as to its position by the mass of the latter. The follower is maintained in an abnormal position by the said mass so long as the diameter of the portion of the yarn-load against which it bears exceeds the predetermined diameter; but it is permitted to approach its normal po sition by the diminution of the diameter of the yarn-load as the depletion of the latter progresses. I provide the shuttle also with a device which for convenience of reference I term a trip and which is intended when in its normal position to coact with or control outside instrumentalities for bringing about the desired results in the working of the loom in which a shuttle embodying my invention is employed. Thus, as will be obvious to those who are skilled in the art, the said trip may be utilized to bring about an arrest of the action of the whole or of some partof the loom mechanism or to bring about automatic replenishment of the workingweftsupply, all substantially as heretofore proposed in the art. The said outside instrumentalities and the precise manner of the cooperation of the trip therewith are not material to my invention, which resides in the shuttle and its parts, and may be varied in practice. engaging portion or detent, which coacts with the trip and operates to maintain the trip in its abnormal position so long as the diameter of the portion of. the yarn-load against which the follower acts exceeds the predetermined minimum. The consumption of the said yarn-load in the process of weaving, and consequent decrease in diameter of the said portion thereof, permits the follower to approach its normal position, and at the predetermined point the detent is disengaged from the trip, allowing the trip to take its normal and operative position. The construction and arrangement of the follower and trip and the manner of combining them with the loomshuttle may vary in practice. I .prefer, in accordance with one portion of my invention, to apply the follower to the receiver or holder for the yarn-load, since thereby greater facility in'the use of the invention is secured, and to apply the trip to the shuttle-body in such manner that as the said receiver or holder with a yarn-load upon the same is depressed into the yarn-receiving cavity of the shuttle the detent of the follower will engage with the trip and maintain the latter in its abnormal or inoperative position. The drawings show the shuttle as provided with a shuttle-spindle 3, which is pivoted within the shuttle-body upon a transverse pin 4, as usual in shuttles. The yarn-load 2 is shown applied to the said shuttle-spindle in the form of a cop. The drawings show also the follower at 5, it being pivoted at 6 upon the butt of the spindle 3. The pivotal pin at 6 occupies a vertical position, so that the follower 5 is adapted to swing transversely in the shuttle, its feeling end moving transversely toward and from the blade of the spindle. The said feeling end is furnished with a rounded contact portion 51 to bear against the exterior of the cop 2 at the base of the cop. A bent-wire spring 7, attached to the butt-end of the spindle 3 by means of a screw 71, has its free end engaged in a hole in the follower, as shown in Fig. l, and acts with a tendency to turn said follower upon its pivot 6, so as to press its feeling end inward against the yarn-load.
The trip is designated :3 and is shown mounted upon a vertical pivot 81 in a slot 82,
formed for its reception in the side of the shuttle-body. The operative end 83 of the said trip is exposed at the said slot in position to coact with the outside instru mentalities, to which reference has been made. The manner of the coaction may varyin practice; but in the present instance the said end 83 is furnished with a tooth or projection (see Fig. 1) to engage with a cooperating trip on the lay of the loom as the shuttle enters the receiving shuttle-box at the end of a flight across the loom. A spring 8t acts upon the trip with a tendency to move it into its normal or operative position, and a pin 85 or equivalent stop limits the movement of the trip under the action of the said spring.
For the purpose of detaining the trip in an abnormal or inoperative position so long as the required volume of yarn is contained within the shuttle the follower 5 is provided, as already referred to, with a detent which engages with the trip. Herein said detent is shown at 9 and constituted by a pin movable transversely through a hole formed in the butt-end of the spindle 3, one end thereof being pivotally connected with the corresponding end of the follower 5 and the other end thereof being arranged to engage with the arm 861 on the trip 8. In the retracted or inoperative position of the trip while engaged by the detent 9 its tail 86 makes contactwith the adjoining wall of the shuttlebody at one end of slot 82, and thereby the trip is steadied.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the follower and its detent in consequence of being mounted upon the shuttlespindle 3 move in unison with the shuttlespindle as the latter is raised and lowered. The raising of the shuttle-spindle, therefore, disengages the detent 9 from the trip. The E proper rengagement of the said parts after the shuttle-spindle has been lowered again may be arranged to be effected manually, if desired; but preferably I arrange to cause the same to be effected automatically and without manual intervention by providing one of the interengaging parts with a curved or cam-shaped guiding-wing, which receives the contact of the other as the spindle is lowered and retracts the trip. Herein the said wing is shown at 87, formed upon the trip and extending upwardly therefrom to receive on its acting face the contact of the corresponding end of the detent 9 during the lowering of the shuttle-spindle.
It will be perceived that by the action of spring 7 the contacting portion 51 of the follower 5 is held pressed against the exterior of the base of the yarn-load 2, and when in the course of the weaving the said base begins to decrease in diameter the follower is allowed to turn correspondingly until the required reduction in the diameter of said base has taken place, at which latter time the detent 9 will become fully disengaged from the trip, leaving the latter free to assume its normal or operative position. It is desirable that convenient means should be provided for enabling the time of the release of the trip to be regulated, so that differences in the sizes of yarns used at different times may be accommodated and whereby the said release may be caused to occur while the desired length of weft still remains unwound in the yarn-load. To this end I provide the follower 5 with an adjusting-screw 5:2, acting in connection with the contact portion 51, which latter is constituted of an elastic blade or strip attached by one extremity thereof to the follower.
I claim as my inventionable follower acting against the exterior of the wound yarn-load carried by the shuttle and provided with adetent, anda trip adapted in its normal position to control the action of outside instrumentalities, and held by such detent in an abnormal position until its release is permitted by depletion of the said yarn-load to the predetermined extent, substantially as described.

In a loom-shuttle, in combination, the receiver for a woundyarn-load, afollower movably mounted on said receiver, acting against the exterior of the said yarn-load and provided with a detent, and a trip adapted in its normal position to control the action of outside instrumentalities, and held by such detent in an abnormal position until its release is permitted by depletion of the said yarn-load to the predetermined extent, substantiaily as described.
