Description

UNITED STATES n PATENT OFFICE.
OLAF HOFF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.`
FIREPROOF FLOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent N o. 691,466, dated January 21, 1902. Application filed August 19, 1901. Serial No. 72,461. (No'model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLAF HOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Floors; and I do hereby declare the following to be af ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention has for its object to improve the construction of iireproof lfloors wherein the cement body of the ficor is supported by embedded beams and tightlystretched floor-wires.
To the above ends the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout both views.
Figure l is a plan View, with some parts broken away and others removed, showing a section of a ioor constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line @c2 m2 of Fig. l.
The numeral l indicates the metal floorbeams, which are preferably aorded by I- beams, but which may take any other form.
The numeral 2 indicates the floor-wires, which are passed both over and under the fioor-beams l and are drawn closely together throughout the main' section or span between the beams. The beams l are thus embraced by the floor-wires, and the spread or embracing sections of said wires form trusses in the vicinities of the said floor beams. Great strength is also given to the central portions l. These links 3 are driven toward the iioorbeams 1 until the proper tension is given to the said wires.
The numeral Lindicates the concrete body of the iioor, in which are embedded the oorbeams l, floor-wires 2, and links 3. As shown, the Hoor is formed with angular channels 5 between the spread portions of the Hoor-wires 2. This reduces the weight of the floor without perceptibly decreasing its strength.
The lower strands of floor-wire which embrace the beams l are separated therefrom by nails or short wire-spacing sections 6,which thus adord a space between the wire and the beam into which the cement may run, and thereby more firmly secure that portion of the cement which underlies said beams.
With the arrangement of the floor-Wires above described a plurality of trusses are formed in the concrete body adjacent to the beams. This concrete ioor-body is completely trussed as far out as the tightening-links 3, and between these tightening-links, the wires being run double, great strength is afforded to the intermediate portions of the iioorspans. Otherwisestated, the trussed portions of the floor-body extending from the beams l to the links 3 act much as abutments, while the spans proper or suspended portions of the iioor extend only between the said tightening-links. This construction, therefore, is especially adapted for use where the floor-beams are spaced far apart, or, otherwise stated, makes it possible to locate said floorbeams farther apart than would be possible with the prior constructions of this character.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
l. The combination with a series of beams, of a plurality of wires arranged in pairs embracing the beams at a right angle thereto, which wires are drawn together and secured at points in the vicinity of said beams to forni trusses adjacent to said beams, the intermediate portions of said wires being extended parallel, and a body or sheet of concrete embedding the said beams and wires, substanconereteembeddng thesaid beams, Wires and 1o tiaily as described. tightening-links, substantially as described. 2. The combination with a series of beams, In testimony whereof I ax my signature of transverse Wires arranged in pairs embraein presence of two Witnesses. 5 ing the beamsin planes at aright angle there- A 1 to, tightening-links Sudam@ ou said wires no OLAF HOB F' stretch the same and draw together the-inter- Witnesses: mediate portions thereof and form trusses ad- J. W. LEWIS,
' jacent to said beams, and a sheet or body of A. VY. CARPENTER.
