LIFEMSAVING APPARATUS.
SEEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 691,1 53, dated January 14, 1 902.
Application filed July 10, 1901. Serial No. 67,725. (No model.)
To all whom t 11i/ay concern,.-
Be it known that I, ICILIUs W. MACCOLINI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Inwood, in the State ot' New York, have invent-` ed certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Saving Apparatus, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to life-saving apparatus; and the object thereof is to provide an ordinary bathing-costume with an apparatus of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be conveniently used for the purpose specified and which may also be used as an aid in swimming or in learning to swim.
In the drawings forming part of this speciication I have shown my improvement applied to a womans bathing-costume; and the invention is fully disclosed in the following speciication, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is a view showing the method of using my improvement; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the sleeve of the bathing costume or garment, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of the sleeve of the costume or garment and ot' t-he shoulder portion of said costume or garment and showing the construction in detail.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown, reference being made to Fig. 1, a woman provided with an ordinary loathing costume or garment, and this garment is provided with large sleeves 5, which are connected with the shoulder of the garment atI 6 in the usual manner, and in the practice of my invention I place in each sleeve a hollow receptacle 7 of the same general form as the sleeve, said receptacle being composed of rubber, rubber and canvas, oil-cloth, or any other suitable material impervious to water and adapted to hold air. The receptacles 7 are buttoned to the shoulder at 8 and to the bottom portion of the sleeve, as shown at 9, or this connection may be made in any desired manner, preference being given to a detachable connection in order that the said attachment may be taken out and the garment Washed or cleaned whenever desired. I also provide a flexible tube l0, which eX- tends transversely of the breast and the ends of which are connected with the attachments 7, as shown at 11,in any desired manner, and the tube lO is provided with a branch tube 12, the end of which is adapted to be placed in the mouth for the purpose of inflating the receptacles 7. The tube l0, as shown in the drawings, extends transversely of the breast of the garment; but this tube may be passed around the neck, if desired, and by means thereof air may be forcedfrom the lungs into the receptacles 7, so as to fully expand the latter.
The life saving orswimming attachment-is practically concealed from View when in use, and it will be apparent that the sleeves 5 and the receptacles 7 may be of any desired size, and by means of the construction herein described sufcient air may be forced into the receptacles 7 to sustain any person in the water, and the operation of inilating the receptacles 7 may be repeated whenever necessary if for any reason the air should gradually escape therefrom. In the construction shown the sleeves 5 terminate at or j ust below the elbow; but it will be apparent that the sleeves :may be carried to the wrists, if desired, in which event the receptacles 7 may be similarly extended. In use the arms are passed through the receptacles 7, as will be readily understood, and the said receptacles do not interfere with the use of the arms in swimming.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. A bathing-garment provided with air-receptacles which are placed in the sleeves thereof and which are secured therein at the shoulders and at the lower ends of the sleeves and through which the arms are adapted t0 be passed, and means for infiating said air-receptacles, substantially as shown and described.
2. A bathing-garment provided with air-receptacles which are placed inthe sleeves thereof and which are secured therein at the shoul- IOO , ders and at the lower ends of the sleevesand In testimony that I cletiln the foregoing as through which the arms are adapted to be myinventionlhave signed my name, in presro passed, and means fornatngsaid air-reeepence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 8th tacles, consisting of a exible tube connected day of J ul y, 1901. therewith and a flexible branch tube commu- ICILIUS W.
