SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,893, dated January 7, 1902.

To aZZ whom it ntcty concern:
Be it known that I, SQUIRE D. MCGUIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guilford, in the county of Nodaway and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditch-Rollers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in ditch-rollers, and more particularly to such rollers as are used in the cultivation of corn;
and it has for its object to provide a ditchroller which is easy and efficient in operation,
simple and inexpensive in construction, and
very durable and which will pulverize and I5 crush the clods and will roll, pack, and stay the dirt on both sides of and very near a row of. small corn, making a wide flat ditch, so that cultivation can be more effectively and easily done while the corn is yet small.
My invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a top plan view; Fig. 3, a side elevation; Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of one of the stop-levers; Fig. 5, a detail perspective view of the bracket with which the inner ends of the roller-shafts engage; Fig. (l, a side elevation of one of the shaft-supporting hangers, and Fig. 7 a detail view of one of the guides for the stop-levers.
In the drawings, in which like letters of 5 reference denote like parts throughout the several views, A represents the frame of the ditch-roller, which comprises front and rear beams B B and cross-bars O C C on each side of the frame, the opposite ends of which 0 are connected by bolts or otherwise to said beamsBB. E is the drivers seat, which is supported on brackets F, secured to the tongue. The said seat is made long and narrow for the purpose of allowing the d river to move along the same to a point where his weight will balance the weight of the tongue, and therebytake the weight off the horses.
G G are plates, each provided with a series of holes G and one end of each is secured to a block G and the opposite end to the cross-barO. Hand-levers H H are provided, 5 5 each pivoted at H to the front beam 13 and extending under the plates G G and resting and sliding on the upper surface of the beam B.
I represents pins designed to be inserted in '60 any one of the series of holes G in the plates G G for the purpose of locking the hand-levers in different positions.
J J are stop-levers, each provided with a horizontally-extending arm J which is att'ached to the hand-lever, and a vertically-depending arm J provided with an elongated slot J. The cross-pieces O are each provided with guides O for the arms J of the stop-levers.
K represents brackets depending from the opposite sides of the frame, which brackets are provided with elongated slots K".
Lis a U -bracket depending from the tongue midway of the frame and provided with elongated slots L. I
M M are hangers depending from the frame, each comprising two arms M M, said hangers M M provided with pivoted supports M M, respectively.
N N are shafts, each of which is mounted at a point substantially at its center in one of the pivoted supports of the hangers M M. The inner ends of said shafts engage and are adapted to slide vertically in the slots L of the bracket L, while the outer ends engage and are adapted to slide vertically in the slots K of the brackets K. Said shafts also pass through the slots J in the arms of the stoplevers J J. 9
O O are two sets of conical rollers loosely mounted to rotate on the shafts N N. The rollers O are adapted to be slid laterally, so as to vary the distance between them and the rollers O to compensate for different widths in the rows of corn, the movement of said rollers being regulated by the stop-levers J J, which in turn are regulated by the hand-levers H H. i
P represents washers loosely mounted at I03 several points on the shafts for the purpose of reducing friction between the rollers and the parts with which they engage.
By having the shafts of the rollers mounted in pivoted supports at the center the shafts are enabled to swing on said supports, and the rollers are thereby allowed to rise and fall, according to the nature of the ground traversed. The conical shape of the rollers tends to throw the roller outward toward the side of the stop-levers, and the two rollers combine to throw the dirt toward the row of corn.
Although I have described but two pairs of rollers, the number may be increased or diminished, as desired.
I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction herein shown and described, as I may change the same somewhat without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- l. A ditch-roller provided with one or more hangers, a shaft pivoted to each hanger, and rollers loosely mounted on each shaft, one of said rollers being adapted to slide laterally on its shaft, substantially as shown and described.
2. A ditch-roller provided with one or more pivoted shafts, having rollers mounted thereon, one of which is loosely mounted and adapted to slide laterally on its shaft, and means for regulating the sliding lateral movement of said roller, substantially as shown and described.
A ditch-roller provided with one or more pivoted vertically-movable shafts having rollers thereon, one of which is loosely mounted and adapted to slidelaterally, and means for limiting the said sliding lateral movement, substantially as shown and described.
4. A ditch-roller provided with a shaft having rollers, a hanger consisting of depending arms, and a tubular support pivot-ed between said arms in which said shaft is mounted, substantially as described.
5. A ditch-roller provided with a shaft having rollers,one of which is loosely mounted and laterally adjustable on said shaft, a hanger, a support pivoted thereto in which said shaft is mounted, and means for regulating the movement of the laterally-adjustable roller, substantially as shown and described.
6. A ditch-roller provided with a verticallypivoted shaft having rollers, one of which is laterally adjustable, means for limiting said lateral movement, and means for receiving and guiding the ends of the shaft, substantially as shown and described.
7. A ditch-roller provided with a shaft having rollers, one of which is laterally adjustable on said shaft, a hanger, a support pivoted thereto in which said shaft is mounted, a hand-lever, a stop-lever one end pivoted to the hand-lever and the other end adapted to engage with the laterally-adjustable roller and limit its lateral movement, substantially as shown and described.
8. A ditch-roller provided with a shaft having rollers, one of which is laterally adjustable thereon, a hanger, a support pivoted thereto in which said shaft is mounted, a stoplever, one end of which is pivoted to a handlever and the other end adapted to engage with the laterally-adjustable roller to limit its lateral movement, and brackets having slotsin which the ends ofsaid shaft engage and slide, substantially as shown and described.
9. A ditch-roller provided with one or more pivoted shafts, each shaft having a roller loosely mounted thereon adapted to slide laterally, and a non-slidable roller, and means for limiting the movement of the laterallyslidable roller, substantially as shown and described.
10. A ditch-rollerprovided with ashaft having rollers, one of which is laterally adjustable, a hanger on which the shaft is pivoted, a lever provided with a slot which embraces said shaft and limits the lateral movement of the laterally-adjustable roller, substantially as shown and described.

A ditch-roller provided with pivoted shafts, each having rollers thereon, a bracket provided with slots with which the inner ends of said shafts engage and in which they move, and brackets provided with slots with which the outer ends of said shafts engage and in which they move, substantially as shown and described. 12. A ditch-roller provided with a frame, shafts having rollers, one of which is laterally adjustable, hangers, depending from said frame, supports pivoted to said hangers in which the shafts are mounted, a U-shaped bracket at the center of the frame provided with slots, with which the inner ends of the shaft engage, brackets at the sides of the frame, with which the outer ends of the shafts engage, substantially as shown and described.
13. A ditch-roller provided with a vertically-pivoted shaft, rollers mounted loosely on said shaft, one of which is adapted to move vertically and the other to move vertically and slide laterally, and means for limiting the sliding movement of the laterally-movable roller, substantially as shown and described.
14. Aditch-rollerprovidedwithoneormore hangers, and one or more shafts each provided with a pair of rollers, comprising a loosely-mounted slidable roller and a looselymounted non-slidable roller, said shafts pivoted to the hangers at a point between said rollers, substantially as shown and described.
