u UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFICE.
WILLIAM w, MocoaMIcK, or SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA.
BAG OR SATCHELHLIGHTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,753, daet January 7, 1902. I Applicationfiled Maroh'2, 1901. Serial No. 49,572. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. MCCOR- MICK, a citizen of the Uni ted States, residing at Santa Rosa, county of Sonoma, State of California, have invented an Improvementin Bag or Satchel Lighting Devices; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a device which is designed as an attachment for bags, satchels, cases such as are carried by medical men, and the like.
It consists of a lighting device fixed to the bag or like article and means by which a light may be turned on or exposed or cut ofi at will.
It also comprises the attachment of the battery or light-producing plates to the bottom of the satchel, so as to form a strengthening device for this portion inaddition to its other uses.
My invention also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a view of a bag-having the lighting device attached to it. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through that end of the bag which carries the light.
Doctors, surgeons, and medical men generally are provided with hand bags or cases in which their medicines and instruments are contained, and such practitioners are often suddenly called to patients who may in case of accident be found in dark places upon the street or in poorly-lighted rooms or places,.
and it is often necessary that instant relief be given without the loss of time such as would be necessary in hunting up a light.
Theobject of this inventionis to provide a convenientlighting device which is a part of the outfit carried by the doctor and means for rendering -it instantly serviceable when needed. Such a light may be produced-in various ways. In the present case I have illustrated it as in the form of an electric light, as A, of any suitable or desired shape. I prefor to make the hermetically-sealed container in which the filament is contained of-an essentially circular form and of about the same size as the exterior glass or bulls-eye 2, through which the light is displayed. If desired, a
carries a switch-lever 8, which is within reach of the one carrying the bag, so that by pressing this lever down the contacts are completed and a sufficient electrical current is passed through thefilaments to produce the desired light.
The energizing device may be a small storage or dry-plate battery or well-known similar device. I prefer to form a dry-plate battery in tabular shape, having a form approximately the same as the bottom of the bag, and this battery is removably fixed into the bot* tom of the bag, but made sufilciently rigid therewith so that it forms a stiflening for the bottom of the bag. This battery may be removed or replaced whenever desired and 00* cupies no appreciablespace within the recep tacle. The lighting device can also be removed or replaced at will. I I have here described an electrical lighting device as being a convenient form in which my invention may be carried out; but it will be understood that in some cases other wellknown forms ofclighting devices may be attached to the bag with similar attachments to those represented by the present switch for displaying or concealing the light.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A satchel or the like having a stifieningplate in its bottom serving as a battery element, conducting-Wires connected with said plate, switch-points and a switch-lever connecting with the wires, and a lighting device in the circuit and exposed through one of the walls of the satchel.
2. A satchel or the like having letinto one of its Walls a lighting device, a battery of tabular form in the bottom of the satchel and points fixed upon the frame of the satchel, wires connecting the lighting device therer 5 with, a battery for the generation of an electric current having wires connecting it with the switch-points, said battery forming a horizontal stiifening base or bottom for the satchel.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM W. MCCORMICK. \Vitnesses:
