UNITED STATES CHARLES S. LOCKE,
PATENT OEEICE.
OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS.
SPRING-HINGE.v
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 688,957, dated December 17, 1901. lpplicaldon filed April 15, 1901. Serial No. 55,921. (No model.)
:o doors to which they are applied.
The object of my invention is to provide a hinge of this class which 'shall be simple in construction and operation and may be readilf 1 1 semhled, but which i is so constructed that the two main members paratedebygimplgLLe-mare securely held in place 1n one member of isturbing the of the hinge may b normalement@ Wit spring or other p'arts connected thereiii'tlfso that the l 'nge member containing the spring 2o may be secured to a door-frame permanently,
while another door containing the other meinber of the hinge may beremoved and another door containing a similar member may be hung without changing the position of the hinge member on the door-frame.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l shows a front elevation of my improved hinge. Fig. 2 shows a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 shows a verti- Fig. Ltis a top plan view of the hinge iu the position shown in Fig. l. Fig. 5 shows a horizontal section of a portion of the hinge. One leaf A of the hinge has laterally-projecting ears a2 ai, between which a springchamber 1s 'formed One end of the spring C is secured to the wall of the spring-chamber by being passed through an aperture c therein, while the other end of the spring is 4o attached to a hub D, that has a flange d on its upper end resting on the top of the upper ear a3 of the leaf A. The central portion of the hub extends through an opening in the top ear a3, and this hub is held in place and prevented from being detached by the spring C. The other leaf A of the hinge has a lower ear a, which projects under the lower ear of the first-mentioned leaf, and an upper ear a5, which extends over the top of the hub D.
5o The flange d of the hub is provided with a series of radial slots d to receive a sliding pin E, that passes through a lng a' on the leaf A. This pin has a head or handle e ou its outer end, and it is also provided with a head e on its inner end, entering the slots d, as indicated in Fig. 5. The pin may be moved into and out of the slots, but is prevented from being detached from the lug a. By means of these devices the tension oli the spring C may be adjusted. The pivot pin or pintle B extends through the ears of both leaves and through the hub and spring. When the pintle is in positionfthe two members of the hinge are pivoted together and -y e separated, but the hub and the spring the hinge even after the pintle is removed. The lower end of th-e hub D is formed with a, projection or boss d2, around which the upper coil of the spring extends, while the end ofthe spring extends throughalugds, projectinglaterally from the boss d2. By this arrangement the spring and hub are held iu proper alinement. The upper coil of the spring fits the boss d2 snugly, so that there is no wabbling or chance of any disarrangement of the parts. If it is desired to remove the spring and hub from the spring-chamber, it may be done by turning the spring so as to withdraw the end from the aperture c in the casing aud then moving the hub and spring through the apei l,ure in the lug d3. The .rub and spring will still be firmly connected even after they are withdrawn from the spring-chamber; but they may be disconnected by turning the hub on the pivot formed between the upper end of the spring and the lug d3 and then moving the hub sol as to cause the lug d3 to slide laterally off the end of the spring.. The spring, it will be observed, is held securely in place at its lower end against any vertical movement, and the arrangement-is such as to draw the hub downward. The member A of the hinge may be permanently fastened to a doorframe, while the member A' may be secured to a storm-door or a screen-door. In view of the fact that the separation of the hinge members does not necessitate the removal of the spring and part-s connected therewith two members A' may be used in connection with each member A. One of said members A' may be permanently attached to a stormoperate in the usual way. lfVheu the i1 le`65 .o members o the hinge be removed and the screendoor s ubstituted very easily without the necessity of shifting the member A' from one door to the other or of changing the position of the member A on the door-frame. Preferably the front of the spring-chamber is closed by a casing A10, whilethe rear portion of the chamber is open, as shown in Fig. 3.
I claim as, my inventionv 1. A hinge, comprising a leaf formed with upper and lower ears having a spring-chamber between them, a flanged hub extendingA through an opening in the upper ear and having its angeformed with a series of. slots or recesses-and resting on the top of the upper ear; acoiled spring arranged in the chamber and having its lower end secured to the wall thereof and held against a vertical movement and its upper end secured to the hub and drawing downwardly thereon, thus serving to hold the hub in place; another leaf having-a lower ear arranged under the lower ear of the first-mentioned leaf, and an upper ear ar- 2"5 ranged over the top of the hub; a remgyable intle extend' nghLhe-earsiofgjghegtwo lealesn. .through the hub and spring, and a pin carried by the second-mentioned leaf adapted to engage the slots in the hub. 3o
2. 'A hinge, comprising two members pivotall-y connected by a pintle, and one of which is lformed with a spring-chamber; a coiled spring arranged in said chamber, and having its lower end detachably connected with the 3 5 wall thereof, but held against a vertical movement; a' hub carried by the chambered leaf and having a boss which the upper coil of the p spring fits snugly and a lug on the boss through which the upper end of the spring 4o extends, and by means of which the hub is pivoted to the spring.
-In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this ltli'day of April, A. D. 190].
