SAMUEL THOMAS YOUNG, OF GLASGOW, KENTUCKY.
APPARATUS FOR FILING AND CAN CELING CHECKS OR OTHER PAPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,769, dated December 10, 1901.
7 Application filed March 22, 1901. Serial No. 52,307. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL THOMAS YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Glasgow, in the county of Barren and State of Kentucky, have invented an Improved Apparatus for Filing and Canceling Checks or other Papers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in the class of apparatus for filing and canceling checks, drafts, and other papersin which/a series of piercing-points are set upon an inclined frame having a series of steps.
The detailsof construction are as hereinafter described, reference being had to the 1.0-1 companying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the filing-points. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a filing-point. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the split pin constituting part of a filingpoint. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the triangular portions of the head of a filing-point, the same being shown in the flat. Fig.6 is a perspective view of such triangular portion bent into the angular form required for attachment to the split pin.
The frame A of my improvedapparatus is constructed with two side plates or bars which are inclined at an angle of about forty-five degrees and supported at their upper ends by v means of legs a, the said bars being joined transversely by a series of plates or bars a, which constitute the risers of the several steps with which the side bars are provided. Upon each of the several horizontal steps of frame A, I apply a plank or board B, the same being set back from the adjacent riser a for a purpose hereinafter stated. Upon each of the several supports 13,] apply three points 0, which serve for canceling and filingchecks, drafts, and other papers. These points 0 are arranged equidistant, and behind each, upon the adjacent riser a, is applied an alphabetical symbol, as shown in Fig. 1. It. is to be understood that the frame may be made of any desired size; but in this instance it is so constructed and the number of filing-points is such as to admit of a division of the alphabet, whereby two letters appear behind each point, save in the case of the last one, where four letters appear. Thus, beginning at the top of the frame, the letters A B appear be- In such base a is fixed a vertical tube or socket 0. These parts 0 c constitute the fixed portion of a point C. The removable portion of the latter is composed of a pin 0 and a triangular head 0 composed of two triangular wings 0 formed of a piece of sheet-metal of triangular shape, the same being subsequently bent at a right angle along the central longitudinal line, so that it assumes the shape shown in Fig. 6. The head of the pin 0 (see Fig. 4) is provided with two cross-slits 0 arranged at right angles to each other. Each of the triangular wings a is set into the slits so that their vertical angles are adjacent, as shown in Fig. 2, and the same are soldered therein to provide for permanent attachment. The upper ends or points of the two opposite wings c are bent slightly inward and soldered together, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to form asharp piercing-point or apex.
As illustr'atedin' Fig. 1, a check or other paper is canceled and filed by pressing it down upon and over the winged'head c ofa point C. If it be supposed that a check bearinga name beginning with I or J is to befiled, it will be placed upon the point C, which As shown in Fig. 5, each wing is is directly in front of the letters IJ upon the second riser a from the top of the frame A, and so of all other papers. They will be filed by applying them to the points 0 which are opposite the letters or letter constituting an initial of the name appearing on said papers. It will be seen that by placing the point-supports 0 back from the risers a a space is provided for'insertion of the fingers beneath the papers when it is desired to remove one or more thereof. It will be further seen that to eifect such removal it is only necessary to withdraw upward that portion of a filingpoint comprising the winged head and split pin.
By this apparatus the system of canceling ledger be used, it is evident that a considerable amount of labor would be saved in posting by reason of the fact that the names on both journal and ledger would appear in alphabetical order and could be posted accordingly without the extra trouble of continuously turning from one side of the ledger tothe other. One of the most important feas tures' is that any check or voucher can be readily found'at any time, so that it is an easymatten to learn the exact standing. of any. account. The position of. the point-supports B adjacent to the risers 0. serves to 1 hold. thev letters, che.cl 's,3or: otherpapers in such} manner that they are prevented from turning; around and becoming crossedwith eachother.v I n= otherwords, thepapers are keptstraight andifaced one way, soas-tobe rea'dy for. entering when taken from the file.
The boardsB are madenarrow andispaced from-the riser-son. oppositev sides. By malt ing the boards B narrow. the fingersof the handrmay be" run along both. sides offthem forthe' purpose of "picking up anyparticul'ar check or collection. of checks. The spaces hetweenaboard and: the riser which is back of iiti is important: in that it. allows this operation-that is'to'say, it provides an opening for: reception of the fingers, so that. there is nodifficulty, inraising a particular check or. collection of checks. In further. explanation of this feature it maybe stated zthatwhen Bestseone if the bottom check or papers should be a little out of line, so as to extend over the front edge of the board B, the hand would be likely to missthe bottom check unless there werea space onthe rear side of the board, which allows the check to be conveniently picked by another finger. It will be understood that the fingers run on each side of the board in this operation.
What I claim is,
1. The improved apparatus for the purpose specified, comprising a frame or stand having a series of steps, a series of narrow boards B secured on the severalsteps and each separated from the riser in front and the riser in rear of it by a narrow space, and a.v series of separable and'verticalfilingand canceling points secured on said boards, substantially as shown and described I 2. The improved filing-point composed'of the vertical base-socket, the pin adaptedto be set. therein and having; cross-slits and a head formedlof' two triangularsheet.- metal pieces, each bent centrally lengthwise, and the two parts being set withtheir anglesad jacent and in vertical position, substantially as shown and'de'scribed.
3. The improved filingpoint; comprising thesocket, the removable-pin provided with slits asdescribed, the triangular-wingsbent longitudinally'at a right angle, andisecured insaidslits with their angles adjacent, their upper ends being bent towardeachother and soldered together, substantially asishown' and described. I
In, testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
