MINERS CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,092, dated December 3, 1901.
Application led August 2l, 1901. VSerial No. 72,785. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWiLLiAM ISRAEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Caps, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usev the same. v
This invention relates to miners caps and lamps; and the object thereof is to provide a miners cap with improved means for supporting a lamp; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of vwhich the accompanyng drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference character in each of the views, and in Which- Figure 1 is a front view of a miners cap provided with my improved lamp support or holder; Fig. 2, a section of the front part of the cap and the lamp support or holder on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a View similar to Fig. 1, showing a modification; and Fig. 4, a view similar to Fig. 2 of the construction shown in Fig. 3.
In the drawings forming part of this specication, reference being made to Figs. 1 and 2, I have shown at 5 an ordinary miners cap, which may be made of any desired material and in any preferred manner, and this cap is provided with the usual front rim 6, andv secured to the top of the cap and to the rim 6 is a lamp support or holder 7, which is preferably composed of a stiff back piece 7, of any suitable stiff material, such as sheet metal, and a front piece 7 b, of leather or other suitable flexible material, and the edges of the stiff back piece 7a are folded over forwardly to form longitudinal side flanges or keepers 7 ,within which the edges of the front piece 7b are held. The lamp support or holder is provided at the top with an upwardly-directed yoke-shaped portion 8, having a yokeshaped slot or opening 9, the ends of the sides of which are directed downwardly and. forwardly, and between which is an upwardlydirected portion 10, through which passes a rotatable cylindrical pin or member 11,which is provided at its rear end with a reduced portion 12, which passes through the back part of the yoke-shaped portion 8 of the lamp support or holder, and the front end of said pin passes forwardly through the front part of the yoke-shaped portion 8 of the lamp support or holder and is providedat its front end with a slot or recess 13 and centrally thereof with a transverse opening 14.
The lower end of the lamp support or holder '7 is secured to the rim of the cap, as shown at 15, and gives to the said rim the required stiness. I have also shown at 16 an ordinary miners lamp, and this lamp is provided at the back thereof with an upwardly-directed attaching device 17, which is U-shaped in form and one side of which is directed downwardly and backwardly to form an arm 18, and this arm 18 of the attaching device 17 is passed through the slot or opening 9 in the top portion 8 of the lamp support or holder and downwardly through the opening 14 in the pin 11, and the front portion thereof rests in the slot or recess 13 in the front end of said pin.
The pin 11 is free to turn in the lamp support or holder, and said pin is provided with a downwardly-directed finger 19, which prevents its forward movement and holds it in position. As thus supported the lamp 1G is free to swing laterally, and is thus maintained in proper position at all times, and the arm 18 of the attaching Y device 17 prevents the lamp from swinging backwardly and striking the support.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 differs from that shown in Fig. 1 in that a transverse slot 2O is formed in the top 8 of the lamp-support instead of the yoke-shaped slot 9and a rotatable cylindrical block or member 21 passes through the front of the lamp-support and has a bearing 22 in the back thereof. The block 21 is provided in the top thereof with a longitudinal slot 23, which opens through the front end of said back, and the attaching device 17 of the lamp is passed downwardly through a transverse hole 24 in the said block 2l, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The block 21 is provided with three downwardly-directed transverse projections 25, 26, and 27, and the arm 17 passes downwardly between the rearmost projections 25 and 26, while the front portion of the holder 7 fits between the foremost projections 26 and 27. This construction prevents the block 21 from coming out and the lamp from swinging backwardly, so as to strike the cap, while at the same time it permits the lamp to swing freely toward both sides and also forwardly.
The front part of the holder proper, or that part thereof which is secured to the cap, is also provided at 28 with an opening through which the arm 18 is free to pass, and by means of this opening the lamp may be turned forwardly and upwardly into a horizontal position, and this opening Aalso permits the lamp to swing freely forwardly and backwardl y.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, isl 1. A miner-s cap provided at the front thereof with an upright lamp support or holder, the upper portion of which projects above the cap and is U -shaped in form, a rotatable member passed through said upper portion and adapted to turn therein, and a lamp provided with an attaching devicev which is passed through the upper portion of the support or holder, and through the rotatable member, said lamp being free to swing laterally, substantially' as shown and described.
2. A miners cap provided at the front thereof with an upright lamp support or holder, the upper portion of which projects above the cap and is U -shaped in form,a rotatable member passed through said upper portion, and adapted to turn therein, and a lamp provided with an attaching device which is passed through the upper portion of the support or holder, and through said rotatable member, said lamp being free to'swing laterally, and
being held by its attaching device out of contact with the bottom portion of. the support or holder, substantially as shown and described.
3. A lamp-holder for miners caps adapted to be connected with the frontof a cap and provided with an upwardly-directed portion,
with a top longitudinal slot at the rear end y of which is a passage which extends downwardly through the bottom portion of said member, and means for holding said rotatable member in position and for preventing the longitudinal movement thereof, substantially as shown and described.
5. A lamp-holder for miners caps adapted to be connected with the front of a cap and provided with an upwardly-directed portion having a slot or opening, a rotatable member mounted in said portion and provided With a top longitudinal slot at the rear end of which is a passage which extends downwardly through the bottom portionof said member, means for holding said rotatable member in position and for preventing the longitudinal movement thereof, and a miners lamp provided with an attaching device, one end of which projects downwardly and backwardly and is adapted to be passed through the slot or opening in the vupwardly-directed portion of the holder and into the slot in the rotatable member and downwardly through the passage in the back portion thereof, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 17th day of August, 1901.
WILLIAM ISRAEL.
