SHAFT-COUPLING.

Be it known that-I, WILLARD B. CULVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oarbondale, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft= Couplings, of which the following is a description.
The object of the present invention is to provide a shaft-coupling of maximum strength which shall consist of few parts, easily man ufactured and readily assembled.
A further object is to provide a coupling of small cost of construction the parts of which to a considerable extent may be of cast metal, if desired, requiring but little machine-Work. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the improved coupling. Fig. 2 is atransverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters denote corresponding parts, A A designate two adjacent sections of shafting the ends of which are threaded.
B designates a tubular metallic casing, the interior of which is contracted in size at b to form a seat coacting with the shaft-socket F, as hereinafter described.
D designates a bushing or plug, the lower portion of which is exteriorly screw-threaded at d and is received within the interiorlythreaded upper portion of the casing B. In the present instance I have also shown the plug D as provided with a lateral flange d, which may, however, be dispensed with. The upper portion of the plug D is provided with a shaft-recess d interiorly screw-threaded to receive the threaded end of the shaft A.
d designates a transverse tongue secured to or, as here shown, formed integral with the plug D on the under side thereof and projecting downwardly in the interior of the casing B.
E designates a rocking block, preferably formed of a single piece of metal and provided upon its upper surface with a transverse recess e, somewhat larger than the tongue (1 of the plug D, so as to permit of the desired degree of transverse movement of said block. The under side of said rock'- ing block is also provided with a transverse recess 6, here shown as extending substantially at right angles to the recess (2, formed in the upper surface of said block.
F designates a movable shaft-socket formed, preferably, of a single piece of metal and interiorly threaded to receive the correspondingly-threaded end of the shaft A. The upper surface of the socket F is provided with a transverse tongue f, somewhat smaller than the transverse recess 6, formed in the under side of the block E, so as to permit of the desired degree of movement of said socket and said block.
The lower portion of the socket F is provided with a shoulder f, the under surface of which is preferably somewhat rounding and which coacts with the seat 1), formed in the interior of the casing B. In the present embodiment of the invention I have shown the lower portion 1) of the casing B as extended below the contracted part in which the seat I) is formed, such extension having an opening of larger size than the diameter of the shaft A in order to permit of the free movement of thelatter. This extension, however, is not essential, but may be dispensed with. Where it is desired to run the shaft in water, so that the coupling is immersed, I may provide the section of shafting adjacent to the coupling with a bushing or washer of flexible material for the purpose of preventing ingress of water to the interior of the coupling, while not interfering with the freedom of movement of the shaft.
What I claim is-- 1. In a shaftcoupling, the combination with a casing, of a plug secured to one end thereof, a shaft attached to said plug, a flexible joint within the casing and coacting therewith,and a shaft secured to said flexible joint, substantially as set forth.
2. In a shaft coupling, the combination with a casing, of aplug, a sockethaving movement in said casing and a rocking block interposed between said plug and socket, and means for precluding independent rotary movement of said plug and socket, substantially as set forth.
3. In a shaft coupling, the combination with a casing, of a plug secured thereto and having a tongue, a shaft-socket movable in said casing and also having a tongue, and a rocking block having recesses adapted to receive the tongues on said plug and s0cket,substantially as set forth.
4. In a shaft-coupling, the combination with a casing, of a plug secured thereto, a shaft secured to said plug, a rocking block and a socket within said casing, and a shaft secured to said socket, substantially as set forth.
5. In a shaft-coupling, the combination with a casing, of a plug secured thereto, a
shaft secured to said plug, a socket within said casing and coacting with a shoulder therein, and a rocking block interposed between said plug and socket and provided with recesses adapted to receive transverse tongues secured to or forming part of said plug and socket, substantially as set forth.
