CORNER-POST AND JOINT.
SPEGIFEGATILON forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,1 14, dated November 19, 1901. Application filed September 11, 1901. Serial No. 75,079. (No model Post and Joint, of which the following is av full, clear, andexa'ct description.
Our invention relates to a corner-post and connections whereby an improved joint is formed for use in vehicle-bodies, furniture, carpentry, dto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this speciiication, which is a perspective View of a corner-post and joint embodying our invention.
The corner-post is shown at 1, and the two panels are made at a right angle, as shown at 2 and 3. These panels are mitered, as shown at 12. The post is provided with dovetail tongues 4. 5 of the shape shown, and the dovetail tongues are provided with longitudinal feathers 10 l1, all of said parts being integral. The panels are undercut at 6, 7, 8, and 9 for the purpose of aii'ording anchorage. The advantage of this arrangement is that the longitudinal feathers lO and l1 serve to brace the dovetail tongues in place, so that even if one of the panels should split, for instance, from any point on the faces 7 or 8 to the miter-line 12 the angles of the feathers lO 11 would coperate with the faces 6 and 9, and thereby prevent separation of the post and panel. The anchorage of the post in the panel is therefore eifectively made by the addition of the feathers 10 11. It will be observed, therefore, that the post has an advantage over the ordinary post provided with dovetail tongues in that our post has extra bearings, and the post therefore cannot pull away from the panels. Owing to the anchorages holding the parts so firmly together the tendency for any part to split is greatly lessened for the reason that any part that might be easy to split asunder from any other part can have sufficient play to permit its severance from the main body. In fact, about the only way to separate the post from either of the panels is to tear asunder a considerable part of either the post or the panel. The parts cannot be separated by the mere chipping off of a small portion of wood, as is ordinarily the case.
Our invention admits/of general use, as above stated. Not onlyis it particularly good for all sorts of vehicle-bodies, upon the corners of which the strain is considerable, but it canbe used in any relation whatever where a secure, compact, cheap, and reliable joint is needed for any purpose and where the parts are intended to possess unusual strength coupled with lightness.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenty 1. A device of the character described, comprising a corner-post provided with dovetail tongues, said tongues having angular feathers integral therewith, said tongues and feathers extending lengthwise in the longitudinal direction of the post, and a plurality of panels provided with surfaces for engaging said post and withl grooves -for engaging said tongues and said feathers.
2. A device of the character described, coinprising a corner-post provided with dovetail tongues and angular feathers superposed upon said tongues, all of said parts being integral, and aplurality of panels provided with grooves for slidably engaging said tongues and feathers.
3. A device of the character described, conlprisinga pair of panels provided with niitered ends and with dovetail grooves, said dovetail grooves being deepened by central channels of angular cross-section, and a cornerpost provided with dovetail tongues for engaging said grooves and with angular feathers integral with said dovetail tongues for engaging said channels.
4. A device of the character described, coinprising a pair of panels provided with mitered ends and with dovetail grooves and channels connected with said grooves, and a cornerpost provided with V-shaped projections for engaging said dovetail grooves and with mem.-
