UNITED STATES PATENT Gr mes.
CARL TAMM, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 686,165, dated November 5, 1901.
Application filed July 11, 1901. Serial No. 67,824- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL TAMM, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to suspenders; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view showing the application ofmy invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the hooks pressed together ready to be removed from the socket. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the arrangement of the spring which actuates the hooks. Fig. 4 is an edge View showing the edge of one of the hooks and the spring-oasis g within which the springs are protected.
In the construction of my invention I provide the usual strap 1, adapted to be inserted in the ordinary manner through the loop 2. Upon each end of the strap 1 is fixed a double metallic plate 3, and between the plate 3 the hooks comprising the fastening devices are pivoted.
4 indicates the hooks, which are pivoted between the said plates 3, and each of the said hooks has formed near its upper end a casing 5, and the extensions 6 extend upwardly from the said casings and are pivotally held between the plates 3 by means of the pivot-pins 7. A spring 8, composed of two arms, is also pivoted to each of the pins 7, and the lower ends of the said arms extend into the spring-casings 5 and bear against the outer sides thereof, thereby actuating the hooks apart, the purpose of which is to engage their lower ends under the sides of the sockets 9, secured to the waistband of the trousers. A U-shaped plate 10 incloses the loop 2 and two hooks 11, similar in construction to the hooks 4, are pivotally mounted between the sides of the said plate 10. The said hooks 11 are also provided with springcasings 12, within which a spring 13 is mounted, serving a like purpose as the springs 8.
14 indicates a metallic casing adapted to be connected to the ends of the suspenders and being provided on its lower side with a slot 15, through which the hooks 11 are passed and engage, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
In application the hooks 11 are inserted within the slots 15, thereby connecting the straps to the ends of the suspenders. The sockets 9 are attached to the waistband of the trousers, and the hooks 4 are pressed together in opposition to the springs 8, and the lower ends of the said hooks are passed within the sockets 9 until their lower ends engage beneath the under sides of the said sockets, thereby forming a firm connection which is only broken when the hooks 4 are pushed together to release their lower ends from the sockets. The springs being inclosed within the casings 5 are thoroughly protected and do not easily become dislocated or injured.
I claim- 1. The improved suspenders, having a strap, hooks carried by each end of said strap, casings formed on said hooks, springs mounted within said casings and adapted to actuate the hooks away fromeach other, and means for connecting the hooks.to the garment, and spring-actuated hooks carried by the middle of the strap whereby it may be attached to the middle of the suspenders, substantially as specified.
2. The improved suspenders, having a strap, a double metallic plate carried by each end of said strap, hooks pivotally connected to said plates, casings formed on said hooks, springs supported between said plates and projecting into the said casings to actuate the hooks away from each other, a ring mounted over the said strap, a U shaped plate connect ed to said ring, hooks pivotally mounted between said plate and having casings formed thereon, a spring supported within said casings to actuate the hooks apart, and means for connecting the said hooks to the suspenders, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARL TAMM.
