WILLIAM A. SEIBEL, OF INDEPENDENCE, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK O. WROTEN, OF INDEPENDENCE, IOWA.
HAIR-RETAINING CCHVIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,148, dated November 5, 1901.
Application filed April 2'7, 1901. Serial No. 57,694. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. SEIBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ladies Combs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toilet-combs for holding the hair in place; and it consists of two intermeshing combs which may be disengaged before removing them from the hair.
My device is very simple in construction and is provided with a very efficient locking device,whic11-is secure against all accidental disengagement.
' In the drawings which accompany this specification and of which they form a part, Figure 1 is a perspective of a first two-toothed comb. Fig. 2 is a perspective of a second threetoothed comb. Fig. 3 is a view of the two interlocked. Fig. 4 is a detail showing a fragment of the back of one comb with one of the pins anda fragment of one of the slotted teeth. Fig. 5 is a section on the line at m, Fig. 2.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a first comb having two teeth 2 and a back 2, provided with flanges 3, all formed integral'and of a sheet of metal. A second comb 4. has three teethtwo outside ones 5 and a middle one 6. The comb 4 is also adapted to be formed of a single piece of metal and has a back 7, provided with flanges 8. The two teeth 5 have keyhole-slots 9 in their outer ends, which are constructed to engage round headed pins 10, seated in the rear of the back 2 of the comb 1. lVhile all the teeth of both combs are'formed so that they are concave on their front faces, this feature is of special importance in the case of the two slotted teeth 5, as their concave grooves 11 form guides which serve to direct the pins 10 into the keyhole-slots 9.
WVhen in use, the combs are inserted in the hair with the flanges 3 and 8 down and in contact with the head, thereby holding the hair up from the head, keepingit cool. The teeth are intermeshed, as shown in Fig. 3, the pins 10 brought to engage the guides 11 and slipped along toward the points of the teeth until they drop into and become engaged by the slots 9.
I do not Wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention. For instance, I may employ combs having any number of teeth greater than two.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a first flanged comb, a second independent flanged comb meshing with said first comb, the said flanges on said combs being constructed to bear on the head and hold the combs up and thereby lessen the weight of the hair on the head, and means for look ing said combs together, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination, of a first comb having pins in the back thereof, a second comb meshing with said first comb and provided with teeth having longitudinallygrooved faces with keyhole slots located in the bottom of said grooves, said grooves being constructed to act as guides to deflect said pins into said slots, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. SEIBEL.
