To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Gnonen W. SCHELLEN- BAOH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved File-Cleaner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a structure for cleaning files-that is to say, for removing from between the ridges in the file such matter as may accumulate therein; and the invention comprises an arrangement of alternating layers of foraminous or open-work metal material and cloth, such parts being secured together and worked edgewise against the file to clean it.

This specification isa specific description of two forms of the invention,while the claims are definitions of the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic section of the device, and Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic section of a modification.

a indicates the cloth, and Z7 and o the foraminous or open-work metal plates. These open-work plates may be either woven wire or perforated sheet metal, or may be alternate layers of each. This latter arrangement is preferred-that is to say, (see Figs. 2 and 3,) I prefer to employ one or more layers of Woven-wire gauze 6. Between these metallic layers the cloth is arranged. This cloth may be formed in one continuous strip folded back and forth over and above or, around the layers of metal, as in Fig. 2, or it may be in separate sheets of material, while the open-work metal structures 1) and c are bent double, as in Fig. 3.

When the parts are arranged as shown, they are securely glued together, and in fin ishing the product the exterior of the mass may be covered with glue and a covering of stout cloth placed around the entire device, so as to protect the hands of the user.

In using the invention a raw edge of the structure is wiped back and forth across the file, so that the particles of metal on the sheets 17 and '0 enter the spaces between theridges on the file, while the cloth brushes off the filings and other superfluous material and acts as a guard to prevent the points of the wire from bending over when subjected to severe use. i

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A file-cleaner, comprising a structure having a plurality of layers of open work sheet metal and a relativelyflexible or yielding ma terial interlaid with said metal sheets.

2. A file-cleaner, comprising a structure havinga pluralityof layers of open-work sheet metal held securely together, and sections of cloth set between said open=work metal sheets.

3. A file-cleaner, comprising a number of layers of open-work sheet metal, and a section of cloth folded back and forth between said layers of sheet metal, all of said parts being securely fastened together.

4. A file-cleaner, comprising a number of layers of open-work sheet metal, and a section of cloth folded, back and forth between said layers of sheet metal, all of said parts being securely fastened together, and the said layers of sheet materialbeing formed alternately of woven-wire gauze.
