Be it known that 1, JOHN C. MARSHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Washington, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Packing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in cigar-packers.

The object of my invention is to provide a cigar-packer by means of which the cigars before being placed in the box may be compressed into the proper shape and space.-

My invention provides, further, two compressing members relatively movable one toward and from the other, the movable member forming a support for the cigars, combined with means for adjustably limiting the scope of movement of the movable member and releasable means for preventing rearward movement of the said movable member.

My invention provides, further, certain novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The cigar-packer comprises two members A and B, which are the compressing members. The member A comprises a horizontal base 0, a rear vertical portion D, and the compressing-abutment E, disposed vertically at one end of the base and at right angles to the rear portion D. Reciprocally mounted upon the base 0 is a horizontal movable platform F, upon which the cigars are placed before compressing and which is provided at its right end with a vertical abutment B, which is the movable compressing member. The abutment B is disposed parallel to the abutment E. The movable platform F is provided on its under side with a slide-block G, reciprocally mounted in a longitudinal slot H in the base 0. The slot H is preferably beveled downwardly and outwardly on its sides, and the block G is beveled to correspond. This construction prevents the platform F from rising from the base. The movable member is reciprocated by means of a lever I, horizontally disposed, the rear end of which is pivoted in any suitable manner to the base C. A link J is connected at one end to the lever I and at the other end to the underside of the platform F. Upon the forward side of the base portion 0 is secured a rack K, the teeth thereof being in the upper edge and so shaped as to prevent the rearward or retrograde movement of the movable compressing member B when the teeth are engaged by the pawl L, which is pivotally mounted upon the said movable member. To the right of the rack, upon the base 0, is secured an adjusting-plate M by means of a set-screw N, which extends through a longitudinal slot 0 in the plate M and enters the base 0. The plate M is so located as to be struck by the pawl L when the member B is moved to the farthest extent to the right. By adjusting the plate M to the right or left upon the base 0 the movement of the member B is regulated to suit the number or size of cigars to be compressed.

' In operating my invention the lover I is moved to the right until the pawl L strikes the plate M, the pawl being lifted from the rackK, so as to permit of themoving of the platform F, which carries the pawl. The plate M has been previously adjusted by loosening the screw N, moving the plate to the right or left until the abutment B is the required distance from the abutment E, and then tightening the screw N. The first row of cigars are then placed upon the platform F, the ribbon Q having been previously laid thereon with the ends lying over the abutments 0 and E, respectively. The number of cigars placed in the first row is generally twelve, the next row thirteen, the next twelve, and the top row thirteen. After these have been placed as described the press-block is held upon the top row with sufficient force to preventthe cigars bulging upwardly, and the lever I is then forced to the left, thus forcing the abutment B toward the abutment E and compressing the cigars between them. The lever is moved to the left until the pressblock P is against the two abutments. The length of the press block determines the amount of compression placed upon the cigars. The pawl L during the movement of the lever land the platform F to the left runs over the rack-teeth and prevents the backward movement of the abutment and platform after compression. The cigars are then lifted by means of the ribbon Q from the packer and are placed in the box. It will be found that the cigars are each very evenly and uniformly compressed into an hexagonal form. It will be noted that in my invention the cigar support or platform F moves with the cigars during their compression. Where the cigars are compressed upon a stationary support, the moist wrappers stick to the platform and the cigars being forced along the top of the stationary support mutilates the wrappers. In my invention this is avoided.

My invention is subjective of many modifications without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Acigar=packer comprising two com pressing members, one of which is movable toward and from the other, the movable member forming a support for the cigars, releasable means for preventing rearward movement of the said movable member, and adj ustable means for limiting the rearward movement of the said movable member, substantially as described.

2. Acigar-packer comprisingtwo compressing members, a lever pivoted to one member, means for moving one member toward and from the other member when the lever is operated, the said movable member forming a support for the cigars, and adjustable means for limiting the rearward movement of the movable member, substantially as described.

3. A cigar-packer comprising two compress ing members, a lever pivoted to one member, a link connecting the lever with the other member for moving the same when the lever is operated, the movable member forming a support for the cigars, and means for preventing rearward movement of the said movable member, substantially as described.

4. A cigar-packer comprising two com pressing members, means for moving one member toward and from the other, a plate provided with a slot carried by the stationary memher and providing a stop for the rearward movement of the movable member, and asecuring device on the stationary member extending through the slot in the said plate and on which the plate is adjustable, sub stantially as described.
