Be it known that I, HARRY S. MADDOOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washdown Siphon Closet- Bowls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in washdown siphon closet-bowls, and is designed to furnish a con-.

struction wherein the downtakerleg of the siphon is more promptly primed and the bowl operated with a less quantity of water than has heretofore been found feasible. The construction is likewise such that a low level of water may be maintained in the bowl, while still preserving an effective seal and at the same time providing abroad horizontal unobstructed passage-way along the bottom of the bowl and into the uptake-leg of the siphon.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of a Water-closet bowl embodying my improved construction. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates the main body portion or basin of the bowl, provided with the flushing-rim a, uptake-leg b, and downtake or discharge leg 0. I The dividing-wall d instead of being a thin partition descending at a sharp incline into the water is broadened at its lower portion'along the surface e, which extends rearwardly, so as to form a substantially horizontal channel or passage for a distance substantially equal to the depth of said surface below the waterlevel. Within this lower portion is a space h, having an upwardly-directed jet 'm and supplied with water from side channels it, one of which is shownin full lines in Fig. 2. The bowl is also provided with the washdown-jet f, which enters the basin at a point beneath the guardi, flushed by the rim a. The entrance to the bowl from the main supply-pipe is at n, as indicated.

I have found that in a washout-bowl as thus constructed the downtake-leg of a siphon is primed much more promptly than where the jet f alone is employed and that the total amount of water necessary to operate the bowl is considerably less when both jets are employed than where either of them is used separately. I therefore effect by means of my invention not only a saving in time in the working of the apparatus, but also a saving in water, which is oftentimes of the greatest importance. I attribute this result largely to the fact that the powerful priming due to the jet m promptly decreases the resistance which the water in the basin and uptake-leg would otherwise oppose to the jetf, so that the latter jet finds itself correspondingly unopposed and operates to the greatest advantage in assisting the exit of the water present. Moreover, it is a special merit of this construction that should the outlet of the bowl be clogged any overflow that might otherwise be feared will be taken care of. The excess of water in such case would flow directly from the bowl into the passage is, thence out through the jet-opening m, and thence into the siphon-discharge.

In my copendingapplication, filed April 14, 1900, Serial No. 12,800, I claim, broadly, a closet-bowl having its dividing-wall provided with an under surface extending in a substantially horizontal direction to a distance substantially equal to its depth below the wate r-level; this same subject-matter and including therewith a jet aperture in the lower portion of the dividing wall; and also the same subject-matter and including therewith a jet-aperture in the lower portion of the dividing-wall, together with a channel for supplying water to said jet-aperture, for

which reason I make'no claim to the said features in this application.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim is- 1. A siphon closet-bowl provided with a siphon jet-aperture at the under portion of the partition-wall, a channel for supplying Water to said siphon jet-aperture in communication with the interior of the bowl below the rim, whereby, should the outlet from the bowl become clogged overflow will be prevented by a flow directly from the bowl through the siphon jet-aperture and its supply-channel.

4. A washdown closet-bowl, having a grad l ually-inclined partition-Wall, extending substantially to the center of the basin and provided at its under portion With a chamber having a siphon jet-aperture, the bottom of said chamber extending rearwardly in a substantially horizontal direction so as to form a substantially horizontal bottom channel, said bowl having a washdown-jet at the rear of the basin, substantially as described.

5. A \vashdoWn-closet, having a graduallyinclined partition-Wall, provided at its under portion with a chamber having a siphon jetaperture, a Washdown-jet at the rear of the bowl, and a division-wall in the washdownjet forming a supplemental chamber connecting with said siphon jet-chamber.
