IMPROVEMENT IN BLOUGHS.

lT() ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. Bnnes'rnnssnn, ot Hublersburg, Centre county Pennsylvania, have invented a-new and useful Improvement in Ploughs or Plough-Sets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clearpand exact description of th same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, making part ofthis specication, in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my improvement. Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional'view, and Figure Sis a plan or top view of the same. -Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient means of easy adjustment for regulating or gauging the width and depthoffurrow, or the angle of presentation, both vertical and horizontal,of the point of thev plough, for the purpose of vcausing it to take more or less depth and 1and, as desired; and to this end my invention consists in the employment of slotted plates or a slotted angle iron attached to the plough-beam and standard or handle-block, and arranged in such manner that'the rear end -of the beam may be adjusted vertically for varying the depth of furrow, or laterally for thc purpose of causing the plough to take more or less land, hereinafter explained. v
To enable others to construct and use my invention, I will describe it with reference to the drawings, Yin which- I A. represents the yoke or casting provided with arms or branches which clasp and are bolted to the rear end of the plough-beam in such manner as to allow the yoke to extend suiiiciently far in rear of the beam to receive the plough-standard or plate B, and permit its adjustment, as hereinafter described. Said yoke may be made in the form shown in the drawing, or it may be expanded in width in rear of the beam to allow a greater degree of lateral adjustment ofthe beam, should it be found necessary or desirable, and is provided with a horizontal slot, a', whereby the adjustment of the beam upon, and the proper securing of the same to, the standard is eii'ected as hereinafter explained. The standard or plate B is provided with a vertical slot, b, for the purpose of allowing the vertical adjustment of the rear end of the beam in relation to said standard, in such manner as to vary the angle of presentation of the plough-point, and thereby to give greater or less depth of furrow, as desired. B is a socket formed in the standard or plate, for the reception ofthe plough-handle.
C is a four-sided or square bolt, of a size corresponding to the Width of and passing through the slots a and b...
Said bolt is provided at its inner or front end with an elongated or enlarged. head which prevents its escape through the vertical slot in the standard, and at its opposite end with a screw and nut, by means of which the yoke and standard, when properly adjusted, are firmly secured to cach other. In figs. 4 and 5, I have shown the two slots above described, for eifecting the adjustment of the angle of presentation .of the plough, as formedin a single piece or angle-iron, A', the horizontal part or arm a2 of which is bolted underneath the plough-beam,
and is laterally adjustable thereon, and the vertical arm a3 of which is provided with the vertical slot, and with a socket or recess, b', upon its rear slightly curved convex face to receive and rmly hold against lateral play the front concave face of block or standard B, t'o which thehandles aresecured in a socket or recess, B, by the same bolt which connects the angle-iron or plate to the block orstandard, and through which the vertical adjustment of the plough-beam is eliected in the manner above explained., I In this construction the vertical arm of the angle-iron is made to rest snugly against the rear end of the beam, and consequently the square head of the bolt, through` which the adjustment is effected, is countersunk or let into a groove, d, formed in the faceof the iron adjacent tothe end of the beam in such manner as to allow free vertical play thereto without obstruction from the plough-beam- From the foregoing description of the construction and arrangement of parts, it will be perceived that `when it is desired to increase or diminish the depth offurrow, it is only necessary to loosen the nut upon the bolt and to set the beam up oedow'n uponthe standard, the bolt C sliding in the vertical slot therein `in such manner as to cause a vertical deilection inthe line of draught, and consequently to change the angle of pres# cntation ofthe plough-point to the surface ofthe ground, or if it is desired to adjust the plough to make it take more or less land, the beam is moved laterally, the bolt sliding in the horizontal slot, and causing a horizontal deiiection of the line of draught,V thereby causing the plough to take the desired quantity of land, increasing or diminishing the width of furrow,` when the nut is tightened upon the bolt, rmly clamping the parts together. Ifl desired thc faces of the yoke and standard, -which are in Contact, may be provided with ribs or teeth in rows crossing each other at right anglesl in such manner as to prevent any liability of the slipping,r of the same when the bolt is tightened, but ordinarily the construction shown and described, it is believed, will be found suiiicient for that purpose.
Having now described the construction and operation of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The slotted plate or plates, whereby the angle of presentation of the plough, iboth vertical and horizontal, is adjusted in the manner described.
2. Theblock, standard, or 'plate to which the handles are connected, adapted tolt and to be adjusted upon the adjacent face of the plete or angle-iron attached to the ploufoflubeain7 substantially as described.
3. The angle-iron, constructed as described, or its equivalent, provided with the vertical and horizontal slots, andadaptcd to be used in connection with the plough-beam and handles or handle-block, Substantially as and for the purpose set forihu l I In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed 'my name this third day of' June, 1867.
