SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 685,454, dated October 29, 1901. Application filed August 22,1901. Serial No. 72,928. (No model) To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that 1, GEORGE I. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Detroit, county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bolsters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the Io same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, inwhich- Figure 1 is a side elevational view ot' vmy improved bolster, one end being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, partly in horizontal section; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-sectional View on line 3 3, Fig.2.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in holsters designed especially zo for use in connection with car-trucks.
One object of this invention is to simplify the construction of bolsters of the character described, enabling the employment ofa minimum amount of material for the production of a strong and rigid bolster.
Another object is to use structural and rolled members, whereby the parts are easily assembled and repairs can be quickly and readily made.
3o A further object is to enable the employment of a machine-riveter in the assemblage of the parts, thereby facilitating and reducing the cost of manufacture.
Vith these objects in view the inventionV consists in the construction,arrangemcnt,and
combination of the several parts, all as Vwill hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings I have shown a type of bolster in which com mercially-rolled members are em ployed ,the bolsterbeing what is known as a built-up structure. The essential or main members of the bolster are preferably bulb angles, which are connected together by a plate, so as to produce a very rigid structure, the said plate carrying the usual center and side bearings. The webs of the bulb angles-are provided with the usual columnguides, and under cach end of the bolster separate spring-seats maybe providod,if desired,
or the springs may be seated directly against the plate.
In the drawings, A indicates a plate the outer edges of which are suitably riveted to the outwardly-presented legs or flanges b of the bulb angles B, the bulbs of angles Bbcing shown, as at b'. On the webs of angles B are arranged column-guides O, which are in the form of castings suitably riveted in position. The .plate A yand the [langes b and 6o bulbs h' of the angles B are cut away, as at a, b", and 5"', respectively, for the passage of the column, or the column-guides O may be entirely dispensed with, the cut-away por` tions, above mentioned, in the members of the bolster serving as guides for the columns.
The plate A carries the usual center and side bearings, there being arranged under the plate A at these points to strengthen the bolster filler or stitfening pieces D and D', re- 47o spectively,which are held in position by rivets passing through said pieces and the webs of the angles B. A suitable opening for the king-pin is of course formed in the main filler-piece D. The supporting-springs may be seated directly against the plate A, or separate seats may be provided therefor, if desired'.
It will be noticed with respect to the above construction thatitfollows generally the form 8o of a channel. The plate and legs of the angles are in compression under load while the bulb portions of the angles are in tension.
VThe Vertical webs of the angles serve to a certain extent as plate-girders, and in connection with the plate and stiffening-pieces a very rigid bolster is produced.
I am aware that minor changes in the construction', arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my bolster can be made 9o and substituted for those herein shown and described Without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
l. In a truck-bolster, the combination with bulb angles, of a plate, and means for connecting said plate to said angles, substantially as described. roo
2. In a truck-bolster, the combination with bulb angles, of a plate, means for connecting said angles and plate, and colurnn-guides arranged on said angles and at the ends of the bolster, substantially as described.
3. In a bolster for car-trucks, the combina tion with bulb angles, of a plate, means for connecting said plate and angles, columnguides arranged on said angles, and strengthening or iller pieces arranged under said plate and between said angles, substantially as described.
4. The combination with parallel bulb angles having their legs presented outwardly, of a plate riveted to said legs, iiller-blocks arranged between and attached to the angles, and center and side bearings, substantially as described.
5. In a bolster, the combination with bulb angles, of a plate, said angles and plate 'naving vertically-alined cut-away portions, and means for securing said plate and angles together, substantially as described.
6. In a bolster, the combination with bulb angles, of a plate, means for connecting said plate and angles, and column-guides on said angles and at the ends of the bolster, said angles and plate having cut-away portions in alinement with said column-guides for the passage of the columns, substantially as described.
7. In a bolster, the combination with bulb angles, of a plate, means for connecting said plate and angles, column-guides arranged on said angles, said angles and plate having cutaway portions in alinement with said columnguides for the passage of the columns, and filler-blocks arranged between said angles, substantially as described.
