PIPE-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,385, dated October 29, 1901.
Application filed June 22, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that we, HENRY ODETTE and EDWARD GOSSELIN, citizens of the United; States, residing at Macyville, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Lifters of which the following is a specification.
This invention appertains to improvements in pipe-lifters, the object being to provide a cheap, simple, andeffective device for re moving pipes from wells and for such other purposes as the machine may be applicable.
In carrying out our invention we make use of two sets of clamps, one set being connected to levers which when depressed will raise the pipe, the other set holding the pipe against downward movement.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will'be here- In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1is a side elevation of a pipe'lifter made up in accord with our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view, the parts being positioned so that the lower clutch-levers will engage the pipe, the upper clutches being shown out of engagement, as on their downward movement.
The structure is mounted on a suitable base A, which is provided on one side with an open-ended slot ct, and upon such base is attached a base-plate or casting B, having upward extending flanges Z) and a slotwhich overlies the slot in the base, said slot being closed by a latch h, which is pivoted to one of the-flanges, and said latch can be swung Between the parallel flanges b there are pivoted clutchle'v'ers C O, which have upturned ends on one side of their fulcrums, said ends being serrated so as to better grip the pipe, and these clutch-levers have on the other side of their fulcrums foot-rests, so that the operators may release the clutch-faces from the pipe by stepping upon the foot rests' at their outer ends. The same fulcrum-pins that attach the clutch-levers O to the flanges of the face-' plate also connect thereto the lower bifurcated ends of, arms D D, which provide Serial No. 65,608. (No model.)
.swinging fulcrums for the operating-levers E E, the upper ends of the arms being bifurcated, while the inner ends of the leversv are forked, the forked portions on one lever being larger than the other, so that one fork will lie within the other, said forks being pivoted to each other and to a guide-block F, which is provided centrally with an aperture through which the pipe to be lifted is passed. The ends of the blocks F have pivoted thereto the lower ends of toggle-bars G, the upper ends of said bars being connected to bars G, having curved and serrated ends, these bars being pivotally attached to stirrups g g, and are provided at their opposite ends with a plurality of perforations, so that the togglebars can be adj ustably connected. By providin g a plurality of perforations the upper bars can be adjusted to suit the diameter of the pipe which it is desired to lift.
In operation the main levers E E may be depressed, so as to raise the lifting-clutch to its highest point, and when so raised the end of the pipe may be passed through the aperture in the guide-block F and then between the upper ends of the lifting-clutches. The latch being thrown back, the base is'moved to one side to locate the pipe between the lower or holding clutches. The outer ends of the levers are then raised, which moves the sliding block and the toggle-joint clutches carried thereby downward, and as soon as the levers are depressed the upper clutch-bars engage the pipe and being forced upward by the downward movement of the levers willv lift the pipe, which when lifted will be held by the lower clutches, which movement is repeated until the pipe is withdrawn from the well.
The device hereinbefore described gives a direct vertical pull upon the pipe, and by providing toggle-joints a powerful grip is provided. V
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pipe-lifter, the combination of a base upon which is mounted a pair of levers having swinging fulcrums, a block'having an aperture therethrough with which the levers too engage, toggle-joints attached to the block the upper bars of said toggle-joints being connected one to the other and provided with curved and serrated ends,and a pair of cl utchbars mounted on the base so as to be positioned one beneath each of the levers, substantially as shown.
2. In a pipe-lifter, the combination of a pair of levers each lever being connected to a base by swinging fulcrums, an apertured block to which the inner ends of the levers are pivoted, toggle-joints pivoted to the block, the upper bars of said toggle-joints being connected by straps which are pivoted thereto, the upper bars of the toggle-joints having means for adjustably connecting the same to the upper ends of the lower bars and clutchlevers pivoted to the base to be positioned beneah the levers which carry the toggle-joints, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a pipe-lifter, the combination with a base having attached thereto a flanged baseplate, clutch-bars pivotally attached to the base-plate between the flanges thereof, levers connected to the base-plate by pivoted arms, a sliding block engaged by the levers and toggle-joints carried by the block the upper bars being connected and provided with clutch ends, substantially as shown.
4. In a pipe-lifter, the combination of a supporting-base having an aperture therethrough, clutch-bars pivotally attached to the base, a pair of levers each connected to the base above the clutch-bars by means of arms which are pivoted to the base and to the levers to provide movable fulcrums therefor, a block carried by the ends of the levers, toggle-joints pivoted to the aforesaid blocks the upper bars of the toggle-joints being connected, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
