To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MALCOLM FAULKNER EWEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at No.144 High Holborn, London, England, have invented a certain new and useful Appliance for Fixing Sheets of Glass or other Material for Grinding, Polishing, and other Operations, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to an appliance for holding a sheet of glass or other material while it is being ground, polished, or otherwise operated on, as I shall describe, referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 is a plan, showing an appliance according to my invention. 1
I lay the sheet a on a truly-flat slab or tablet with the face that is to be operated on down- Ward. Over this I place a rather heavy rectangular grating 0, having both its faces planed true and parallel. On the sheetI place a perforated mat e, of rubber or other elastic material, which yields more or less to the in equalities of the sheet, and over this I place the grating c, and then into the openings of the grating I pour a heated cementing com position consisting principally of wax and pitch or such like materials.
This on cool ing sets on the sheet, holding it firmly on the grating. The sheet being thus fixed, I invert the grating, so as to present the sheet with its face upward to be operated on as required. After the. sheet has been operated on I pour warm water over it, so as to soften or partly fuse the cement, allowing the sheet to be removed.
Having thus described the nature of my said invention and the best meansI know of carrying the sam'e'into practical effect, I claim An appliance for holding a plate of glass or the like, consisting of an elastic mat superposed upon the plate and provided with a plurality of apertures, a frame superposed upon- MALCOLM F.
