ASHBEL P. BARLOW, OF ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN.
SU RGICAL APPLIANCE.
SPECIFIGATIQN formingpart of Letters Patent N0. 685,088, dated October 22, 1901. Application filed January 10,1901. Serial No. 42,769. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASHBEL P. BARLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin SurgicalAppliances; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to surgical appliances for the treatment of rectal and vaginal discases.
The object of the invention is to provide surgical appliances which will enable the practitioner to return all falling or protruding parts to their normal positions.
With this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The drawing shows my invention in longitudinal vertical section.
Referring to the figure, 0, denotes a flexible rubber tube of suitable length and diameter to meet the requirement of the purpose for which it is to be used.
1) denotes a plug inserted in one end of the tube, and 0 denotes a surgeons sponge inserted in the other end and having a portion protruding therefrom. Said sponge is held in proper position by a spring 02 or its equiva= lent, having one end attached to the sponge and the other end attached to the plug.
The device is used for returning the organs to their normal positions, and the sponge may be medicated for treating these organs Where disease is in its first or primary stage.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the object and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A surgical instrument comprising a flexible tube, a sponge adapted to be held at one end and a plug at the other end, and a connection between the sponge and plug.
2. Asurgicalinstrumentcomprisingaflexible tube, a sponge located at one end of the tube, a plug located at the other end and projecting within the tube, and a flexible con-' nection between the sponge and plug.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
