IIIIIHIIIIIIHIIIIIIIII||||l l I l l l I l l l I I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
W. I. VAN NESS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
TRANSVERSE GALIPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,841, dated October 30, 1849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM I. VAN Nnss, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Instrument for Measuring the Internal Dimensions of Casks, called Van Nesss Transverse Calipers and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact representation of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a. part of this specification, being in two difierent forms, in which- Figures 1, and 2, are perspective views of form 1, in which A is the joint; B the scale fastened to one leg at D and passing through the other at D and C C the legs; and in which Figs. 3, and 4, areperspeotive views of form 2, in which E E are parallel sliding plates, grooved together with a graduated scale thereon in inches and parts of inches; and F F the legs fixed to each plate near their outer extremes.
The operation of this instrument is such that when the legs as in Fig. 1, are opened upon the joint to their farthest extent, the curvated form of each will bring their toes in juxtaposition and crossing at nearly right angles, thus being in readiness to insert in the bung of a cask; when thus inserted it is gradually immersed each toe diverging transversely to opposite heads (as in Fig. 2,) the scale at the same time pass ing through one leg at D thus indicating the number of inches and parts of inches by the reduced scale on its face ;or the operation as in form 2, is such that when the two plates E E are drawn out to their extremes (as in Fig. 3,) the toes are brought into juxtaposition the same as in Fig. 1, and cross at right angles; when thus inserted in the hung, theplates are made to slide together and the legs diverge transversely at right angles from the bung (as represented in Fig. 4) the number of inches and parts of inches from head to head or from side to side being at the same time diverted on the graduated scale.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The transverse calipers, having legs so formed and connected as to be inserted into the bung of a cask, .to ascertain its length from head to head or its width from side to side, substantially as herein described.
W. I. VAN NESS.
