To a whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND W. STARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in instruments especially designed for producing a variety of different forms, especially regularly-curved formssuch as circles, e1- lipses,&c.which may be produced by mathematical precision, although the instrument is adapted to produce various other figures or shapes.
The object of the invention is to produce an instrument which shall not only draw or outline the particular form or figure to be produced, but will cut the same in the material upon which the instrument is worked, it being especially adapted for cutting mats for pictures and similar outline-work.
A further object is to improve upon the construction set forth in my prior patent, No. 533,095.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the features embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View taken through the operating parts. Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are details of some of the tool holding and adjusting devices.

In its main features the operating parts of this instrument are similar to those shown in the prior patent. The bars (1' and d each have sliding heads at and d fitted thereto and adapted to slide to different positions thereon, so as to be moved to or from the center of the shaft or trunnion, and thus vary the form of the figure to be drawn. These heads are made to fit frictionally in their seats, so that they will remain at the point of adjustment to which they are moved.
I have found in practice that in order to produce perfect results in outlining figures of elliptical or other curved forms it is desirable that the tool which marks the outline should be pivoted or swiveled, so as to readily follow the path whether short or long curves, particularly where the machine is used not only to mark the figure, but also to cut out the material with beveled edges. that it is essential that means he provided for adjusting the tool to the proper position in startingin order that the figure to be produced may be produced within the proper lines. To this end I have constructed the head d" with an auxiliary seat for the reception of a carrier (1 so that the latter may be adjusted laterally across the bar d, as well as longitudinally on the bar. The tool-carrier d" is made in the form of a socket and may have a series of sockets, and the tool-holder is formed with a round shank to fit said socket and a rearwardly-projecting arm (P, which carries the tool proper. The tools may be of any desired construction or kind and the shank d and arm 61 may be formed integral or maybe made separate, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Fig. 6 shows a tool in which the cutting-blade is adjustable, the arm d being formed separate from but pivotally connected to the shank d, the cutting-blade being secured in a slot in the arm (Z and held at any desired I have found also angle with the shank (1" by an adjusting-nut on said arm (P. Fig. 7 shows a tool in which the shank and arm are formed integral and a hardened-steel wheel inserted in the latter, for which, if desired, a diamond may be substituted for glass-cutting. The tool is preferably held in position in the socket (Z by means of asmall spring d secured to the side of the socket and bent at its lowerend at right angles, so as to impinge against the tool-shank d, and by the friction thus secured to hold the tool in place, at the same time permitting it to rotate in the socket to produce the necessary swiveled draw-cut-action movement of the tool in the operation of the machine. I have also found it desirable to furnish means for holding the material to be operated upon. To this end I have constructed the lower ends of the legs a with slotted openings through which is slidingly passed a U-shaped frame e to form an adjustable gage. This frame is also preferably provided with a cross-bar e, the ends of which are extended rearwardly to form projections e by means of which the bar may be clamped in different positions to the side of the U-shaped bar e by adjustable clamps e The rear or yoke portion a? of the frame a is also preferably connected yieldingly to the base on which the machine is supported. This is done by forming the yoke with trunnions a", which pass through suitable bearings a on the base a or it may be done by making the yoke 0L2 of resilient metal, which will yield sufficiently. The spring a maybe employed, if desired, to keep the forward end of the machine pressing onto the base, or it may be found that the weight will be sufficient for this purpose. By this construction the forward or operating parts of the machine may be raised by means of the handle 0 and the material to be operated upon inserted under the U-shaped frame 6, the crossbar 6 and the front of the U-shaped frame being adjusted to the proper distance to hold the material. I also provide the shaft or trunnion cl with a central opening in which there is inserted a pointed centering-rod d. This centering-rod d" is fitted into the opening of the shaft so as to remain by friction in any position.
In operating the machine just described the material to be worked upon is placed under the frame 6 and is held there by the respective sides of the frame. The head is turned, as shown in Fig. 3, with the bar 01' extending across the machine. The centering-rod d" is lowered, and the point which the center of the figure is to occupy is brought opposite the point of the centering-rod. The knife or other tool is then adjusted laterally until the point of the knife is on a horizontal line passing through the center of the centering-rod d. The adjustments of the respective heads 61 and d are then made on the bars (1 and (Z to form the major and minor axes of the figure, if it is to be an ellipse, and
WllOL the bars are secured in their positions the machine is operated byturning the head d through the medium of the handle-bar 01 to which is attached the trunnion on the head d substantially as described in the former patent, and set-screw (1 passes through said trunnion and engages the bar d to hold the head in proper posit-ion. The spring d is employed to furnish the necessary downward movement to allow the tool to contact with the material and follow the outline of the figure.
By the constructions described I can not only outline the various forms and figures, but can readily cut through any reasonable thickness of paper or other material for mats or similar devices. The tool being swiveled in the tool-holder will readily follow and cut out any desired curve, making a clean incision. By the adjustments described it is possible to readily center the work and insure the figure being properly located upon the material operated upon.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a cutting-machine, the combination of a tool and a swivel-mount therefor, the blade of said tool being inclined laterally with its cutting edge extended rearwardly from theswivel-mountandconstituting means for free bevel-curve cutting.
2. The combination with means for outlining various curved figures, of a swiveling tool adj ustably mounted with relation to said means, the blade of said tool being inclined laterally with its cutting edge extended rearwardly from its swiveling mount, said devices constituting means for bevel cutting.
3. The combination with means for outlining various curved figures, of a tool which is swivellyunounted and the blade of which is inclinedlaterally with its cutting edge extende rca. rm. f iy'from its swivel-mounting, said device constituting means for bevel cutting.
4. In a cutting instrument, the combination with meansforautomaticallyoutliningcurved figures of different shapes and dimensions, of a cutting-tool having a swiveled connection with said means, the blade of said tool being inclined laterally with the cutting edge extended rearwardly from a vertical plane coincident with the juncture of the tool and the means for moving it.
5. In a cutting-tool, the combination with a bar and means connected with said bar for moving it in the paths of curved figures of various shapes and dimensions, of a carrier mounted on said bar, a tool and means for swiveling said tool to the carrier, the blade of said tool being inclined laterally with its cutting edge extended rearwardly from the axis of the swiveling means.

In a cutting-machine, the combination with a horizontal bar and means for moving said bar in the paths of curved figures of various shapes and dimensions, of a carrier mounted on said bar, a cutting-tool having a free swiveled connection with the carrier, said tool provided with an arm at its lower end terminating rearwardly of the axis on which the tool turns and provided with a blade inclined laterally.

In a cutting-machine, the combination with a horizontal bar and means for moving said bar inthe paths of curved figures of various shapes and dimensions, of a carrier mounted on said bar, a cutting-tool having a free swivel connection with the carrier, said tool provided with an arm at its lower end projecting rearwardly relatively to the axis on which the tool turns and provided with a blade inclined laterally.
8. In a cutting-machine, the combination with a horizontal bar and means for moving said bar in the paths of curved figures of various shapes and dimensions, of a carrier mounted on said bar, a tool-holder provided with a vertical shank having a free swivel connection with said carrier, said tool-holder having an arm at its lower end terminating rearwardly of the axis of the vertical shank of the holder, and a blade rigid with said arm and inclined laterally, said cutter being the only moving element of the machine which engages the material.
9. In a machine for cutting ovals and other figures, the combination with a carrier provided with a vertical socket to be disposed above the material, means for moving said carrier to mark the outline of a predetermined figure, a tool-holder having a shank freely swiveled in the vertical socket of the carrier and having a thrust-bearing therein, an arm at the lower end of the shank of the holder, said arm terminating rearwardly of the axis of the shank, and a trailing cutter rigid with said arm and disposed to make a beveled cut.
10. In a cutting-machine, the combination with a tool-carrier and means for moving said carrier in a path coincident with the outline of a curved figure, of a holder having a vertical spindle swiveled to said carrier and an inclined arm at the lower end of said spindle and a blade secured to said arm and inclined laterally so that its cutting edge will be disposed'at an angle to said arm.
11. In a cutting-machine, the combination of a base, a frame pivotally connected at its rear end thereto, means carried by said frame for producing an oval or a circular outline, a horizontall y-ad j ustable work-holder adj ustably connected with the front legs of said frame and adapted to be raised simultaneously with the frame and lowered upon the work to hold it while cutting the same.
12. The combination with a swiveled head having oppositely-extending bars and vibrating members attached thereto, as described,
of a tool-holding head capable of lateral and longitudinal movement on one of said bars substantially as and for the purpose specified.
13. The combination with a main frame, of a rotating head, sliding and oscillating members as described, said frame being yieldingly supported at one end and having an adjustable frame at the bottom to form an adjustable gage and holding device, substantially as specified.
14. The combination of a rotating head having oppositely-extending arms, a longitudinally-movable member on which said head is mounted, a pivoted vibratable member attach ed to said head, a laterally and longitudinally movable tool-holder adjustable on one of said bars having swivelly mounted thereon'an angularly-projecting tool, substantially as specified.
15. The combination with a rotating head having an adjustable tool holder, a main frame supported at the front by downwardlyextending legs and at the rear by a yielding support, a U-shaped frame mounted adjustably in said legs and an adjustable bar extending across the frame, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

The combination with a rotating head having oppositely-extending arms, supported in a longitudinally-movable member, one of said arms being adj ustably connected to a pivoted oscillating member and the other arm having a longitudinally and laterally adjustable tool-holding head and an adjustable centering-rod located centrally in said rotating head, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
17. The combination with a main frame having an adjustable gage in the bottom thereof, a rotating head mounted in and supported by a longitudinally-moving member and connected to a laterally-moving pivoted oscillating member and a centering-rod in said rotating head, substantially as specified.
18. The combination with the rotating head having oppositely-extending arms, a longitu dinallymovable and a pivoted oscillating member connected to and supporting said head, a swiveled tool mounted on one of said arms, means for adjusting said tool laterally with reference to said moving head, substan tially as specified.
19. The combination with a main frame, a swiveled tool and a movable tool-supporting head adj ustably attached .to said frame through the intermediate members, of an adjustable gage or holding device and a handle for raising the frame, substantially as specified.
20. The combination with a main frame, a swiveled tool and movable tool-holding support adj ustably attached to said frame through the intermediate members,said frame being hinged at one end and provided with a gage or holding device, and a handle at the opposite end of said frame for raising and lowering the same, substantially as specified.
21. The combination with a main frame, a movable member in said frame, a rotating head mounted on said member and having oppositely-extending bars, a vibrating member attached thereto, a tool holding head having a lateral and longitudinal movement on one of said bars, and a swiveled tool having a straight shank and a laterally-extendi'ng tool-carrying arm, said shank being pivotally mounted in said head so as to permit 16 a swiveled drawing action of the tool, substantially as specified.

The combination with the rotating head having oppositely-extending arms, a longitudinally-movable and a pivoted oscillating member connected to and supporting said head, a swiveled tool mounted on one of said arms, means for adjusting said tool laterally with reference to said moving head, substantially as specified.

The combination With a main frame, a movable member in said frame, a rotating head mounted on said member and having oppositely-extending bars, a vibrating member attached thereto, a tool-holding head having a lateral and longitudinal movement on one of said bars, and a swiveled tool having a straight shank and a laterally-extending tool-carrying arm, said shank being pivotally mounted in said head so as to permit a swiveled drawing action of the tool, substantially as specified.

Enters this disclaimer- To the claims in said specification, which read as follows:
1. In a cutting-machine, the combination of a tool and a swivel-mount therefor, the blade of said tool being inclined laterally with its cutting edge extending rearwardly from the swivel-mount and constituting means for free bevel-curve cutting.
2. The combination with means for outlining various curved figures, of a swiveling tool adjustably mounted with relation to said means, the blade of said tool being inclined laterally with its cutting edge extended rearwardly from its swiveling mount, said devices constituting means for bevel cutting. 3. The combination with means for outlining various curved figures, of a tool which is swivelly mounted and the blade of which is inclined laterally with its cutting edge extended rearwardly from its swivel-mounting, said device constituting means for bevel cutting.
4. In a cutting instrument, the combination with means for automatically outlining curved figures of different shapes and dimensions, of a cutting-tool having a swiveled connection with said means, the blade of said tool being inclined laterally with the cutting edge extended rearwardly from a vertical plane coincident with the juncture of the tool and the means for moving it.
5. In a cutting-tool, the combination with a bar and means connected with said bar for moving it in the paths of curved figures of various shapes and dimensions, of a carrier mounted on said bar, a tool and means for swiveling said tool to the carrier, the blade of said tool being inclined laterally with its cutting edge extended rearwardly from the axis of the swiveling means.

In a cutting-machine, the combination with a horizontal bar and means for moving said bar in the paths of curved figures of various shapes and dimensions, of a carrier mounted on said bar, a cutting-tool having a free swiveled connection with the carrier, said tool provided with an arm at its lower end terminating rearwardly of the axis on which the tool turns and provided with a blade inclined laterally.
7. In a cutting-machine, the combination with a horizontal bar and means for moving said bar in the paths of curved figures of various shapes and dimensions, of a carrier mounted on said bar, a cutting-tool having a free swivel connection with the carrier, said tool provided with an arm at its lower end projecting rearwardly relatively to the axis on which the tool turns and provided with a blade inclined lateral] 8. In a cutting-machine, the combination with a horizontal bar and means for moving said bar in the paths of curved figures of various shapes and dimensions, of a carrier mounted on said bar, a tool-holder provided with a vertical shank having a free swivel connection with said carrier, said tool-holder having an arm at its lower end terminating rearwardly of the axis of the vertical shank of the holder, and a blade rigid with said arm and inclined laterally, said cutter being the only moving element of the machine which engages the material.
9. In a machine for cutting ovals and other figures, the combination with a carrier provided'with a vertical socket to be disposed above the material, means for moving said carrier to mark the outline of a predetermined figure, a tool-holder having a shank freely swiveled in the vertical socket of the carrier and having a thrust bearing therein, an arm at the lower end of the shank of the holder, said arm terminating rearwardly of the axis of the shank, and a trailing cutter rigid with said arm and disposed to make a beveled cut.
10. In a cutting-machine, the combination with a tool-carrier and means for moving said carrier in a path coincident with the outline of a curved figure, of a holder having a vertical spindle swiveled to said carrier and an inclined arm at the lower end of said spindle and a blade secured to said arm and inclined laterally so that its cutting edge will be disposed at an angle to said arm.
