CUT-OUT BLOCK.
$PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 683,579, dated October 1, 1901. Application filed January 18, 1901. Serial No. 43,724. (Remodel) To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HANS Or'ro SWOBODA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cut-Out Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to that class of devices commonly known as cut out blocks or wall-plugs, and it consists, essentially, of a receptacle of insulating mate rial provided with suitable contacts, a faceplate having a door through which access may be had to the interior of the receptacle, and a detachable plug connected to the external conductors provided with suitable confacts and fuses.
The features of novelty in my improved cut-out block or wall-plug consist, first, in connecting the removable plug at the lower edge of its face with the external conductors; second, in forming an opening in the lower portion of the door of the face-plate; third,
in providing the removable plug with a handle, which when the door is opened will drop into a horizontal position; fourth, in the particular arrangement of the spring-contacts in the receptacle, and, fifth, in the particular shape given to the receptacle. 7
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of such devices and provide a cut-out block or wall-plug which when in use shall have its surface practically flush with the wall or floor on which it is placed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective, showing the door on the face-plate closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the door open and the handle down. Fig. 3 is a vertical section. Fig. f is a view in perspective of the receptacle.
In the drawings, 5 indicates the receptacle, formed of porcelain or other suitable insulating material. The interior of the receptacle is divided into two chambers of given diameters. The smaller chamber 6 is carried to the bottom of the receptacle and the larger chamber 7 is located at the top of the receptacle. Projecting inward into the larger chamber 7 are the shoulders 8, the purpose of which will hereinafter be described. Located within the receptacle are the contacts 9 and 10. The contact 9 is formed of the two plates 11 and 12, joined together at the top, and the contact 10 of a single plate. These contacts are secured in position by means of the screws 13.
15 is a removable plug carrying the fuses 16. The external conductors 17 are carried into the receptacle through the insulatingiube 18 and connected to the metallic contacts on its interior. This tube is located at the bottom of the face of the plug. Secured to the front of the plug is a pivoted handle 19, so arranged as to occupy the position shown in Fig. 3 when the door is closed and the position shown in Fig. 2 when the door is open.

21 is the door of the face-plate, pivoted at its top to the face-plate and having the opening 22 in its bottom sufficient in-siae to in close the insulatingtube 18.
The purpose of the shoulders 8 upon the receptacle is to direct the movement of the plug in a straight line when being put into or' withdrawn from the receptacle, and thereby prevent a circuit being established through the plug between the face-plate and one of the cont-acts on the interior of the receptacle, which will happen if the receptacle is not provided with such shoulders and the plug is turned at an angle upward or downward in being put into or withdrawn from the receptacle. The purpose of the handle 19 is to allow for withdrawing the plug, although the handle may be dispensed with and the plug withdrawn by pulling upon the external conductors.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a cutout block, the combination with a receptacle and its contacts, of a removable plug connected to the external conductors through an opening in the bottom of the face of the plug, a face-plate, and a door hinged to the faceplate and having an opening at its bottom.
2. In a cut-out block, the combination with a receptacle and its contacts, of a removable plug connected at its bottom to the external conductors, a pivoted handle connected to said plug, a face-plate, and a door hinged to the faceplate and having an opening at its bottom.
In a cut-out block, the combination with a receptacle and its contacts, of a removable plug, an insulating-tube in the bottom of the face of the plug, external conductors carried through said insulating-tube and connected to the contacts of the plug, a face-plate, and a door hinged to the face-plate and having an opening at its bottom.
4. In a cut-out block, the combination with a receptacle, a fixed contact, a spring-contact, a removable plug connected to the external conductors at its bottom, a face-plate, and a door hinged to the face=plate and having an opening at its bottom.
