SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,296, dated September 24, 1901;

Application filed February 14, 1901. Serial No. 47,341. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Or'ro KONRAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wiscousin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tags, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in tags for the identification of owners of lost articles; and it consists of means adapted to be applied to an article giving the name and address of the owner.

It also consists of a tag adapted to be applied to an article, the said tag being provided with the name and address of the owner and provided with means for holding postage for the return of the lost article.

It also consists of certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements ofparts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing the preferred embodiment of my invention and with the cover opened. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the lid closed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on line 2 2 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the main body portion of my improved tag, which may be of any desired shape, but preferably oval, as shown in Fig. 1. Extending at right angles to and surrounding the main body portion, except at the ends, is preferably formed a flange, as 2. A lid or cover 3 is hinged, as at 4., to the main body portion, the said lid being of a size to fit within the flange 2, the face of said lid being on the same plane when the lid is closed as the edge of the flange. The hinge 4 is preferably formed of a strip of material integral with said main body portion 1, passed through a"slot in the end of lid 3, and folded upon itself, as seen best at 5 in. Fig. 3.

Pivotally secured to the main body 1 at the opposite end to hinge 4 is a clasp or securing means, as 6, for holding lid 3 in its closed position. Clasp 6 is preferably provided with a loop, as 7, for securing the tag to a key-ring or other article. A portion of the edge of lid 3 is preferably cut away, as at 8, in order that said lid may have its edge come even with the edge of said clasp 6, the

outer surfaces of the two parts being on the same plane. A lug 9 is extended upwardly from the upper edge of said clasp and serves to retain said lid 3 when in a closed position and the lug has been pressed over the same, as seen in Fig. 2.

I prefer to provide the'address of the owner on the inside of the tag and leave space enough between main body portion 1 and lid 3 for a postage-stamp. On the outer face of the lid I prefer to place the words requesting the finder to deposit in any United States mail -box and instructions indicating that postage and the address of the owner will be found on the inside of the tag.

To open my improved tag when closed, as seen in Fig. 2, clasp 6 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 and the lid is free to be swung open. To close said tag, the operation just described is reversed.

Loop 7 is formed primarily for securing the tag to an article; but it serves an additional purpose, which is that of providinga gripping means for moving clasp 6 into a locked or an unlocked position. A bolt or rivet 12, as seen in Fig. 3, is preferably provided for pivotally securing clasp 6 to the main body portion.

Although I have specifically set forth one preferred embodiment and a slightly-modified form of same of my invention, I desire it understood that I shall feel at liberty to alter the shape, size, and minor details of construetion within the spirit and scope of myinven tion.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A tag, comprising two hinged sections, and means for locking said sections together at their free ends, said locking means comprising a pivoted member, inclosing the edge of one section, its face lying in the same plane as the outer face of one of said hinged members when the same are locked together, a lug carried by said pivoted member and adapted to pass above one of said hinged members, and means for moving said pivoted member, substantially as described.

2. A tag, comprising two hinged sections and means for locking the free ends of said sections together, said locking means comcombined swinging lock and integral suspend ing-loop for holding the sections together and suspending the tag, the said loop also forming a handle for turning the said lock on its pivot, substantially as described.
