APPARATUS FOR CARBONATING LIQUIDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 682,145, dated September 3, 1901.
Application filed April 23, 1901. Serial No. 57,112. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. JONES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Oarbonating Liquids; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for carbonating liquids, my object being to make the carbonating process automatic, whereby agitating devices to be operated manually or otherwise may be dispensed with; and to this end my invention consists of the features, arrangements, and combinations hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section taken through a tank equipped with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line :0 a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section taken on the line 1] y, Fig. 1.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a tank, mounted on legs 6 and provided with top and bottom heads 7 and 8, respectively. These heads' are secured by bolts passing through exterii Orly-projecting flanges formed on the heads and the body of the tank, respectively. In the lower part of the tank, above the head 6, is located a loose diaphragm 9, to which is attached an inverted-cup-shaped casing 10, inclosing the carbonating-chamber A or the chamber in which the carbonating operation is completed automatically. Passing through the top of the casing 10 and protruding into the chamber indorsed thereby is a pipe or conduit 12, preferably extending nearly to. the bottom of the chamber, its extremity 12, which passes through an opening in the side of the tank and is provided with a valve exteriorl y located.
In the compartment between the diaphragm 9 and the lower head 8 of the tank is located a pipe-coil l3, perforated for the introduction of gas by way of a pipe 14-, which passes through an opening formed in the tank and is provided with an eXteriorly-located valve. Passing through the diaphragm and projecting upwardly into the chamber A is a tube 15, open at both ends. The lower extremity of this tube is located justv above the plane of the perforated coil 13, while its upper extremity reaches nearly to the top of the chamher A.
Passing through the upper head of the tank is a pipe 16, terminating in a perforated coil 16. This pipe is provided with an exterior valve and is employed to introduce the necessary water or other liquid into the tank.
The top of the tank is provided with an ordinary pressure gage 17, while connected with its vertical wall is a water-gage 18.
When the apparatus is in use, carbonicacid gas is introduced into the tank under the necessary pressure by way of the pipe 14. and the perforated coil 13, the water or other liquid being sprayed into the tank through the coil 16*, as aforesaid. The carbonated liquid is drawn from the chamber A through the pipe 12 by opening the valve 12. The liquid being under the pressure of the gas passes out of the chamber A, creating a partial vacuum, which the gas and liquid by a special impulse incident to the removal of the liquid from the chamber A rush into the said chamber through the tube 15 to fill, completing the carbonating operation. It will be understood that the tank is partially filled with liquid, which is constantly under the pressure of the gas issuing from the coil 13, the valve 12 being open for this purpose when the apparatus is in use. Hence the body of the liquid Within the tank is normally partially carbonated, since the gas issuing from the perforated coil below the diaphragm is allowed to pass between the outer periphery of the diaphragm and the wall of the tank and thence upward into the body of the liquid, the diaphragm being constructed with this end in view. The carbonating process is completed, however, Within the chamber A, Where a greater proportion of gas ismingled with the liquid and absorbed thereby. A small vent C in the top of 'tlie casing inclosing the chamber A permits the escape of an excess of gas from the chamber in order to equalize the pressure in the chamber A and the outer chamber within the tank. Otherwise this excess of pressure within the chamberA would force the liquid out of said chamber through the tube 15, with the result that the chamber A would contain too great a proportionof gas. The vent O overcomes this dififiiculty.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In an apparatus for carbonating liquids, the combination with a liquid containing tank, of a diaphragm located therein, means for introducing gas to the tank beneath the diaphragm, an auxiliary chamber located within the main chamber of the tank, an inlet from below the diaphragm to the auxiliary chamber, and an outlet from the auxiliary chamber, through which the carbonated liquid may be drawn.
2. In an apparatus of the class described,
the combination with a main liquid-containing tank, of a diaphragm located in its lower portion, and a perforated pipe for the introduction of gas, said pipe being located below the diaphragm, of an auxiliary chamber located above the diaphragm, an open-ended inlet-tube passing through the diaphragm into the auxiliary chamber, and an outletconduit leading from the auxiliary chamber. 8. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a liquid containing tank, a diaphragm located in its lower portion, and a perforated pipe-coil located beneath the diaphragm and communicating with the gas-inlet conduit, of an auxiliary chamber located above the diaphragm, a tube passing through the diaphragm into the auxiliary chamber, and an outlet-conduit leading from the auxiliary chamber, the casing of which is provided with a vent located in its upper portion.
