UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL LC PER, OF LICHTENBERG, N EAR BERLIN, GERMANY.
MUFFLER FOR STEAM OR GAS MOTORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 682,096, dated September 3, 1901.
Application filed May 11,1901.
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL LoPER, gentleman, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Lichtenberg, near Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mufflers for Steam or Gas Motors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to improvements in mutllers of sound for steam and gas motors. In an apparatus constructed according to my invention the steam or gas on its way to the muffler proper passes through a nozzle having partly a circular and partly a flat cross-section and being provided with slots, whereby a certain mu'ffling effect is attained before the steam or gas arrives at the muflier proper.
I have presented an embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of an appara tus constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is across-section on line AB of Fig. 1.
The mufller proper, (marked ct,) which is ar ranged within the large tube 1) and from which the steam or gas escapes into the atmosphere through the tube 0, may be of any suitable construction. In the represented embodiment I have shown, by way of example, a muffler constructed according to my Letters Patent No. 556,427, dated March 17, 1896.
In order to produce in admitting the steam or gas to the device a a muffling effect, the tube cl, leading from the motor, enters the larger tube b by means of a nozzle e, the circular cross-section of which changes into a flat one. A similar nozzle is inserted into an Serial No. 59,804. (No model.)
opening of a wall g, dividing the tube 1) into two chambers. The cross-sections of the nozzles c andf can clearly be seen from Fig. 2. Both nozzles are provided with slots h 72., ar ranged at the end of the flat part for enabling the steam or gas to leave the nozzle not only through the end opening, but also at the sides of the nozzle. The steam or gas entering through the nozzle expands at first in the lower chamber of the large tube Z), passes through the nozzle f, and escapes'through the device a and the tube 0. With this arrangement the muil'fling effect is very perfect.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In combination with a mufl'ler for steam and gas motors a tube for leading the steam or gas to the muiiling device and a nozzle connected with the said tube and having partly a circular and partly a flat cross-section, the flat part of the nozzle being provided with slots.
2. In combination with a mufller for steam and gas motors a tube for leading the steam or gas to the muffling device, a nozzle connected with the said tube and having partly a circular and partly a fiat cross-section, the
flat part of the nozzle being provided with slots, and a second nozzle of similar construction and inserted between the said tube and the muffler proper.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
CARL LUPER.
