CAR-DOOR FASTENER.
SPEGIFEGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 681,607, dated August 27, 1901.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. BARLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maybeury, in the county of McDowell and State of Test Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Door Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to car-door fasteners, and more particularly to fasteners for locking the doors or end-gates of mining-cars.
The object of the invention is to provide a car-door fastener which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, efficient in action, and one which when locked will reduce to a minimum the liability of the car-doors being jarred open, due to shocks incident in coupling the mining-cars or of uneven road-beds over which these cars are caused to travel at high rates of speed.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the rear end of a mining-car, illustrating the application of the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through a portion of the floor of a mining-car, the draft-bar, and the boltkeeper.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes that much of the body of a mining-car necessary to illustrate my invention, and 2 denotes the draft-bar.
3 denotes the door or end-gate, hinged in the usual manner at its upper end to the sides of the body of the car and adapted to have its lower end swung outwardly in the act of discharging the contents from the car.
4 denotes a metallic plate which is secured to the outer side of the door or end-gate and is provided with a hole 5, through which hole and the hole 6, formed in the end-gate, projects the draft-bar.
7 denotes an operating lever having a curved bill or end 8. This lever is pivoted to a bracket 9, secured to the outer side of the car-door, and has its handle end 10 guided and limited in its movements by a keeper 11, having a wearing-bar of iron 12 immediately at its rear to prevent the lever coming in contact with the door.
13 denotes a vertically-disposed bolt moun ted in a keeper 14:, secured to the plate afore said and having its upper end forked, as shown at 15, and provided with a cross bolt or pin 16, thus constituting a slotted bolt. The hook or bill of the lever projects between the members of the forked end of the bolt and engages the cross pin or bolt, and when the handle end of said lever is elevated the bolt will also be elevated, and when the handle end of the lever is released the weight of said lever, combined with that of the bolt, will cause the parts to fall to their lowermost positions and there be held against. accidental jar or concussion, to which mining-cars are so frequently subjected. The bolt aforesaid coacts with the bolt-keeper 17, the eye 18 of which projects through a hole in the door and plate and is in line with said bolt. Extending rearwardly and integral with the eye is a diagonal brace 20, which is bolted to the draft-bar, and extending vertically from the eye is a short standard 22, which terminates in a horizontal extension 23, which is also bolted to the draft bar. The eye, brace, standard, and horizontal extension are preferably formed from a single piece of metal cast in one piece or bent into shape, as may be preferred.
It is evident that a car equipped with a door-fastener of this construction will reduce to a minimum the liability of the doors becoming accidentally unfastened, due to sudden shocks and jerks, to which the car is subjected, so that all liability of the contents of the car being accidentally discharged is entirely avoided.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention Will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
