To ALL WHoM 1T MAY ooNoERN:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR lBARBARIN, of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new, useful, and improved Device for Fastening the Ends of Wire Rope together when the same is used for banding bales of cotton, or other like substances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this application.
My invention consists of a metallic ball, around the cireuniference` of which are two concentric grooves, crossing each other at right angles, and deep and wide enough to receive the Wire rope, when the same is bent at its ends around the ball to establish the fastening. i l
A mere glance at the drawings is sufficient to indicate the nature ot' my invention, aslwell as the mode of its operation. At V Figure 1 the device is shown in connection with a wire rope, as when in actual practice or use.
Figure 2 is a. view ofthe ball in a detached state. The grooves and their relation to each other are clearly illustrated in this figure. i
Figure 3 presents a cotton bale banded with wire rope, the ends of the same being connected by my device.
' My invention,t will be seen, is at once simple and cheap, and inasmuch as it connects the ends of the wire rope inV a Way which obviates all necessity for an abrupt bending of the same, it is thoroughly efficient. As it may be of cast iron it may be manufactured with ease and rapidity.
In applying to use, one end of' the Wire rope is bent around it in one of the grooves before the rope is put around the bale, and firmly secured therein by twisting the said end around that part of the rope which is to sustain the tension. This being done the rope is made to encircle the bale, and the other'end thereof` lis put around the ball in the other groove, and secured therein by twisting the end around the main portion of the rope, as was the first end, and the tie or fastening is established. In the drawings, the ball is marked A, and the grooves a and b.
If it be expedient or desirable to use common wire instead of wire rope, the device can be used just as effectively and usefully in the one ease as the other. I therefore reserve the right to use it with wire..
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ball A, when provided with the two encircling grooves a and b, substantially as herein described for the purpose set forth.
ARTHUR BARBARIN.
