Description

No. 680,330. Patented Aug. I3, 190i. P. JACOBSON.
RAILWAY AIR BRAKE DRAIN CUP.
(Application filed Mar. 5, 1901.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES l PATENT Grates;
PETER JACOBSON, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
RAILWAY AIR-BRAKE DRAIN-CUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,330, dated August 13, 1901.
Application filed March 5, 1901. Serial No 49,671. (No model.)
new and useful Improvements in Railway.
Air-Brake Drain-Cups; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide simple,- economical, and readily-separable drain=cups, of the kind utilized in railway air-brake equipment between each carsection of train pipe and a triple valve, said invention consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a longitudinal section of a drain-cup in accordance with my invention coupled to train and triple-valve pipes,- the plane of the view being indicated by dotted line 1 l in the second figure. Fig. 2 of said drawings represents a detail front elevation of one of the cup sections having a strainer therein, partly broken away, the coupling-bolts appearing in this view being in section on the plane indicated by dotted line 2 2 in the first figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A B represent two sections of a cylinder embodied in my improved drain-cup, the meeting ends of these cylinder-sections being annularly flanged, as herein shown. A packing-gasket C is interposed between the flanges b c of the cylinder-sections of the cup, and by means of nuts d, run on bolts e, extending through said flanges and interposed gasket,
this joint of said cylinder-sections is made air-tight.
The head of cylinder-section A- of the cup is provided with a nipple f, with which a triple Valve pipe D has screw-thread union, and a branch E of a car-section of train-pipe is likewise coupled to a nipple g, with which the other cylinder-section B of said cup is provided.
Arranged in the cylinder-section A of the cup is a perforate diaphragm F of preferably coarse-mesh strainer material, and between this diaphragm and a strainerdia-' phragm G of very fine mesh is a mass H of sponge or other suitable absorbent material, this fine-mesh strainer being made to fit an annular recess h in the flanged end of said cylinder-section of the cup flush against the packing-gasket C aforesaid. The fine-mesh strainer-diaphragm intercepts the greater portion of gritty impurities with the air. passing through the cup from the train-pipe to triple valve, the very minute particles of such impurities and moisture with said air being caught by the absorbent material II between said fine mesh diaphragm and coarse-mesh diaphragm F, the sole function of this coarse-mesh diaphragm being to pre-' vent displacement of said absorbent material without interference with the flow of said air,
The particlesof gritty material separated from the air by fine-mesh strainer G accumulate in the cylinder-section B of the cup, and
this cup being separable the accumulation may be readily removed and the strainer, absorbent material, anddiaphragm contents of cylinder-section A of said cup as readily cleaned whenever necessary or desirable,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
Arailway air-brake drain-cup comprising a separable cylinder having opposite headnipples attachable to train and triple-valve pipes, and an air-strainer consisting of a coarse-mesh diaphragm, a backing of absorbent material and a fine-mesh diaphragm back of the absorbent material all confined in the triple; valve pipe-section of the cylinder, the whole of the train-pipe section of said cylinder being in rear of the fine-mesh diaphragm and constituting an accumulator for gritty particles separated from air in its passage from one to the other of said pipes. V
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in
the county of Milwaukee and State of WVisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
PETER JAGOBSON.
