ADVERTISING DEVICE FOR DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,902, dated July 23, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN JOSEPH QUINN, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The object'of my invention is to provide a card advertising device adapted for store or office doors, consisting of a card suitably shaped or cut out and containing on either side of it a unique or startling figure 01' emb1en1 displaying an advertisement in'such manner that when the door is closed one side of the figure or emblem may rest against the door or glass of the door, so as to present the advertisement when seen through the glass to the person entering the store or office, and as the door opens the advertisement-card is adapted to swing over on its standard, so as to clear the edge of the door, and thus present suddenly and in a startling or distinctive manner the reverse side of the card, containing another or similar advertisement, so as to catch the eye of the person entering; and it consists in mounting or attaching the advertising-card to the spring-actuated device hereinafter more particularly set out and described.
The drawing illustrates the device attached to the stile of a door in the position it assumes when the door is closed.
A is a stile of a door, which is preferably a glass door.
Bis the glass panel, and O is the door-jamb.
D is an advertising-card cut out and carrying the advertisement which it is desired to make prominent and is double-faced or has reverse sides, preferably of a similar character, containing the same or a different advertisement. This advertisement-card is attached to the holder B, which holder is connected with the spring-actuated device by an arm H.
E is a base-plate which is secured or screwed to the door-stile and carries on it the brackets F, which stand out about one and a half inches from the base-plate, so as to give clearance. f is a rod which is mounted or carried on the ends of these brackets F.
G is a sleeve journaled on the rod f and which carries the collar I, to which the arm H, which carries the advertising-card, is connected. This collar has a shoulder formed on it, so that it may engage with the stop 2' on the sleeve.
The spring .I is a coil-spring, connected at its lower end with the sleeve G and at the upper end to the collar I. The office of this spring J is to take off or ease the jar on the advertising-card which would be otherwise caused by the sudden slamming of the door, as the slamming of the door would rapidly throw the advertising device back against the glass panel. p K is a lever pivoted at It on a small standard on the base-plate.
It is an arm at one end of the lever and Vertical thereto, and at the other end of the lever there is a hook-shaped or curved end 7c,which projects inwardly, so as to engage with the jamb of the door 0 when the door is closed, and this end is of sufficient depth so that when the door is closed to cause the lever K to rock and draw on the chain L, which is connected to the arm 7c. The rocking of this lever K will put a tension on the end of the chain L near it and cause the sleeve G to rotate, so as to carry around with it the arm H and the advertising device D.
M is a coil-spring situate 011 the base-plate near the edge of the door, with a projecting end or arm N. To the end of this arm N the end of the chain L, which takes two or three turns around the sleeve G, is connected.
It is obvious that when a door is closed, as shown in the drawing, the arm is drawn down toward the base-plate, while the arm N is drawn away therefrom. This is caused by the rocking of the lever K by the projection at the end 70 engagingwith the door-jamb. When the door is opened, the lever K rocks back again, and the tension is taken 0d the end of the chain near 7c and is put into the end of the chain near the arm N. This causes the sleeve G to rotate in the opposite direction and to throw the advertising device over into position clear of the door, and thus display the reverse side of the card to the person entering the room.
What I claim as my invention is-=- 1. In an advertising device, an advertising- ICO card normally situated against the door-panel and capable of moving clear of the edge of the door in combination with a spring-actuated device connected with said card and ar- I ranged to swing it around clear of the edge of the door into the path of the person opening the door when the latter is opened, substanj tially as described.
2. In an advertising device,the combination with a card-holder of an arm connected to a rotatable sleeve suitably journaled on the door-stile, and means for rotating the sleeve in opposite directions so that when the door. is closed one face of the card lies against the door-panel, and When the door is opened the l card is swung around so as to clear the edge of the door, substantially as described.
3. In an advertising device,-the combination with a door and door-j-ainb, of an arm yieldingly-con-nect'edto a rotatable-sleeve and-cart rying at its free end an advertising-card; the rota-table sleeve suitably journaled on the door; a lever fulcrnmed near the doors-edge;
and flexibly connected with the rotatable;
sleeve and adapted to engage with the door-i jamb when the door ,is closed; and a coilspring also flexibly connected with the rotai table sleeve, substantially as described. 4. In an advertising dev-icethecombination with the door-stile A and door-jamb O, of a card-holder B; an arm H yieldingly connected to a rotatable sleeve G; the rotatable sleeve 0 suitably journaled on brackets F; a lever of the first class K fulcrumed near the edge of the door; a coil-spring M provided with an arm N: the chain L attached to the arm N and encircling the sleeve/O and also attached 2 to oneend of the lever K, substantially as described.
5. In anadvertising device the combination with the brackets F of the rod f the sleeve G with stop z formed thereon, the collar I and card-holder, arm H secured thereto and the coil-spring J co'nnectingthe collar and sleeve, substantially as described.
6. In an advertising device the combination with the door-stile A and door-jamb O, of a card-holder B and advertising-card D; the arm H; collar I with stop a; coil-spring J; base-plate E; brackets Fyrodf; sleeveG; the lever K pivoted at It and provided with arm 7c and hook-shapedendk; the chain L; and coil-spring M provided-withanm N ,;su-bstantial-ly as described.
