TROLLEY-SIGNAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,894, dated July 23, 1901. Application filed August 11, 1900. Serial No- 26.572- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Monsn, of Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Trolley-Signals, of which the following description, .in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of tr olley-signals to the end that a single signal-wire may be employed for each block or section which takes its current from the trolley-wire or other currentcarrying wire and visual signals provided at both ends of the block and the signal at the remote or leaving end of the block operated by the car entering the block from either end and restored by the car leaving the block.
In accordance with this invention there may and preferably will be two visual signals provided at each end of the blocksuch, for instance, as a red and blue lamp-and in such case it is designed and intended that one of the signals at one end of the block and the other signal at the opposite end of the block shall be operated by the car entering the block and restored by the car leaving the block, so that a danger-signal may be set in advance of the car at the remote or leaving end of the block and a safety-signal set at the entering end of the block. A locking device, which constitutes the essential fea ture of this invention, is provided at each end of the block, which when in one position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents the operation of the signal, and said locking devices are adapted to be operated by the car or by its trolley when entering and leaving the block. As the car enters the block the danger-signal at the remote or leaving end of the block will be set and the safety-signal at the entering end of the block also set and the locking device at the remote or leaving end of the block will be operated to lock the danger-signal set and the locking device at the entering end of the block will also be operated to prevent the danger-signal thereat from being set, and when the car leaves the block said set signals will be restored to their normal positions.
Figure 1 represents in diagram a trolleysignal embodying this invention, the parts thereof being shown in their normal positions of rest. Fig. 2 is a similar diagram showing the parts in the position they will occupy when a car is on the block, and Fig. 3 is adetail of one of the contacts adapted to be operated by the trolley as the car enters or leaves the block.

At each end of a block or section of signal-wire 1) two visual signals are provided, which are herein shown as a red and a blue lamp 0 d and e f, the red signals indicating danger and the blue signals indicating safety. Also at each end of the block two contacts are provided adapted to be 0perated by the trolley, as g h and t'j, the trolley-engaging contacts h and i being constructed and arranged to be operated by a car entering the block and the trolley-engaging contacts g andj being constructed and arranged to be operated by a car leaving the block. These four trolley engaging contacts are made alike, or substantially so, and each consist of a contact-carrying arm 3, (see Fig. 3,) pivoted at s toa suitable frame and normally resting by gravity upon or against a stop 8 which is disposed in advance of the pivot s, and a depending arm 3 pivoted at s to said contact-carrying arm 8, having at its upper end a projection s, which rests against a stop 8 on said arm 8, so that when said arm 5 is struck by the trolley going in one direction the contact-carrying arm 8 will be moved to engage the contact 8 and when said arm 8 is struck by the trolley going in the opposite direction it will move on its pivot s independent of the contact-carrying arm 5. These several trolley-engaging contacts are hereinafter referred to by di fferent characters of reference.
The contact-carrying arm is (see Figs. 1 and 2) of the entering trolley-engaging contact h is connected by a wire it or otherwise with the trolley-wire a. The contact of the entering trolley-engaging contact h is connected by a wire 2 with a contact-pen 3, normally bearing upon a metallic plate 4,
borne by a bar 5, of insulating material or other form of frame, and a contact-pen 6 also normally bears on said plate 4, which is connected by a wire 7 with a wire 8, which leads to the ground or other return through a suitable resistance, and a relay 9 is included in said grounded wire 8, the armature 10 of which is carried by an arm 11, pivoted at 12. When the trolley-engaging contact 7c 70 is closed, the ground tap or branch h, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 will be closed, providing the switch 3 4 6 is closed. An arm 13 is formed rigidly with the arm 11, which projects upward and bears at its upper end a bar 14, of insulating material, to which a metallic plate 15 is secured, which when moved by the attracted armature 10 is adapted to engage a pair of contact-pens 16 17 and close a connection between the signal-wire and trolley-wire, said connection being represented by wire 18,1eading from the signal-wire b to the contact-pen 17, plate 15, contact-pen 16, wire 18, contactpen 19, normally bearing upon a metallic plate 20, also borne by the bar 5, and another contact-pen 21, normally resting upon said plate 20, which is connected by a wire 22 with the trolley-wire. \Vhen said entering trolley-engaging contact 71 is operated, the current from the trolley-wire passes through h k 2 3 4 6 7 8 to ground and the relay 9 is energized and its armature 1O attracted,
, closing the switch 15 16 17, and thereby closing the connection 18 19 20 21 22 between the signal-wire b and the trolley-wire, providing the switch 19 2O 21 is closed. As the entering trolley-engaging contact h is only closed for a short interval of time by the trolley, these two circuits will only be closed momentarily, the ground branch leading from the trolley-wire being immediately opened at k, and the connection between the trolley-wire and signal-wire being immediately opened at 15 16 17. Yet said circuits will be held closed long enough'for the current from the trolley-' wire to pass to and along the signal-Wire'b and operate certain devices at the entering end of the block and also certain devices at the opposite or leaving end of the block, as will be described. At each end of the block a normally-closed ground branch wire leads from the signal-wire, and at the entering end of the block 53 represents said ground branch wire, it including a switch 50 51 52, (normally closed,) an electromaguet 100, a safety lamp or signal 61, and a suitable resistance. At the opposite or leaving end of the block 34 represents the normally-closed ground branch wire, it including a switch 31 33, the electromagnet 35, the safety lamp or signalf, and a suitable resistance. At the entering end of the block the contact-pens 50 and 52 of the switch normally bear upon a metallic plate 51, borne by the bar 5, and the signal-wire b is connected to said contact-pen 50, and the ground branch wire 53 leads from said contact-pen 52. The armature 101 of the electromagnet 100 is borne by an arm 102, pivoted at 103, and rigidly secured to said arm 102 is anarm 104, to upper end of which the bar 5 is secured.
At the opposite or leading end of the block the signal-wire b is connected to the contactpen 30 of the switch, which normally bears upon a metallic plate 3l,borne byabar 32, of insulating material, or other form of frame, and the contact-pen 33 also normally rests on said plate 31, and the ground branch wire 34 leads from said contact-pen 33 to said wire 34, including the electromagnet 35, the armature 36 of which is borne by an arm 37, pivoted at 38, and rigidly secured to said arm 37 is an arm 39, to the upper end of which the bar 32,0f insulating material, is secured. As the current passes from the trolley-wire through the connection 22 21 2O 19 18 16 15 17 to the signal-wire b at the entering end of the blockthe electromagnet 100 at said entering end of the block will be energized, but its armature will be prevented from attracting by means of a locking device, to be described, which has been previously operated by the relay 9, and the electromagnet at the opposite or leaving end of the block will also be energized and its armature 36 attracted, and the bar 32 will be moved so that the plate 31 will disengage the contact-pens 30 33, thereby opening the ground branch wire 34, and when said bar 32 is thus moved a metallic plate 40 borne by it will engage a pair of contact-pens 41 42 to close a connection between the signal-wire b and the trolley-wire a, herein shown as a wire 43 44 45, and also when said bar 32 is thus moved it will be held by a locking device, to be described, as the electromagnet 35 is immediately deenergized. As soon as this connection is established the current from the trolley-wire a will pass over this wire 43 44 42 40 41 45 to the signal-wire b, and thence along the signal-wire b to the entering end of the block, and thence to the contact-pen 50, metallic plate 51, contact-pen 52, and wire 53 to the ground or other return.
The red lamp e at one end of the block is included in the connection 43 44 45 between the trolley-wire and signal-wire, and the blue lamp d at the opposite end of the block is included in the ground-wire 53, and it will be seen from the foregoing description that when the trolley-engaging contact is operated by a trolley entering the block the danger-signal e will be set at the opposite or leaving end of the block by closing the connection between the trolley-wire and signal-wire at said opposite or leaving end of the block, and the safety-signal d will be set at the entering end of the block, as it is included in the ground connection of the signal-wire. The signals 6 and 01 will at such time be connected in series-the signal a in the connecting-wire between the trolley-wire and signal-wire and the signal (1 in the ground branch wire leading from the signal-wire.
When the connection between the trolleywire a and signal-wire b was established by closingthe switch 40 41 42, the ground branch wire 34, including the electromagnet 35, was
opened by opening the switch 30 31 33, and consequently the signal-wire containing the two signals 6 and d in series would have but a single closed ground branch 53, and to hold said switch 40 41 42 closed with the signals 6 and cl thus -set, when the switch 30 31 33 is opened and the electromagnet 35 consequently denergized, a locking device is provided, which, as herein shown, consists of a bell-crank lever pivoted at n, one arm, as n, of which is adapted to cooperate with pins 11* n projecting laterally from the upright arm 39, carrying the bar 32. Normally the arm 'n rests by gravity on the pin n but when said arm 39 is moved by the attraction of the armature 36 said pin is moved along beneath said 'arm 'n beyond a shoulder or bend n formed in said arm, and when so moved said arm n will fall by gravity into the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 1 and full-line position shown in Fig. 2, and thereby positively lock the arm 39 in its abnormal position, holding the armature 36 in its attracted position, notwithstanding the electromagnet is or is about to become deenergized, and also holding the switch 40 41 42 closed. The switch 40 41 42 will thus be held closed by the locking device it until said locking device has been restored to its normal position, which is accomplished by the operation of the leaving contactj, operated by the car when leaving the block, as will be described. When the signals e and cl are thus set, it is also necessary that the switch 50 51 52 shall be held closed and also that the bar 5, to which the plate 51 of said switch is attached, shall remain in its normal position, so as to prevent setting the danger-signal at the entering end of the block, notwithstanding the electromagnet100,which operates said bar 5, is included in said closed ground tap or branch 53. To accomplish this result, alocking device is also provided at the entering end of the block, whichis constructed substantially the same as the locking device at the opposite end of the block, it consisting, essentially, of a bell-crank lever pivoted at m, one arm, as m, of which is adapted to cooperate with suitable pins m m projecting laterally from the upright arm 104, carrying the bar 5, which is rigidly secured to the arm 102, bearing the armature 101 of the electromagnet 100, which is included in the ground branch wire or tap 53, and is consequently energized when the switch 50 51 52 is closed and the signals and d set, as above described. Normally the arm m rests by gravity on the pin m and when in such position the other arm m of said bell-crank lever occupiesaposition in the path of movement ofan arm 0, projecting laterally from the upright arm 13, so that when the armature 10 of the relay 9 is attracted and the arm 13 moved to close the switch 15 16 17 the armo will strike the arm m and lift the arm 172 into the dottedline position shown in Fig. 1 and full line position shown in Fig. 2, so that its shoulder or bend on will occupy a position opposite and close to the pin m and the arm 104 is thereby mechanically prevented from being moved. It will be remembered clearly that the relay 9 was operated by the trolley-engaging contact h, and consequently operated before the electromagnet 100 was energized. Therefore it will be seen that the locking device m m will be moved by the relay 9 into position to prevent movement of the arm 104, notwithstanding the electromagnet 100 is subsequently energized. The electromagnet 100 is, however, energized immediately after the locking device m m is moved and by pulling upon its armature 101 will cause the pin m to bear hard upon the shoulder or bend "m of said locking device, and thereby hold said locking device in its abnormal position, even though the armature 10 of the relay 9 retracts. Thus the switch 50 51 52 will be held closed by the locking device m m when the signals e and d are set.
When the car arrives at the leaving end of the block, its trolley engages and operates the trolley-engaging contact j to restore the set signals 2 and d to their normal condition and also restore both of the locking devices n and m to their normal positions, so that all the parts will resume their normal condition and positions, as represented in Fig. 1.
The trolley engaging contact j is con structed the same as the trolley-engaging contact h, heretofore described, so that its contact-carrying arm j will be moved to engage the contact j by the trolley leaving the block. When the contact-carrying arm j is thus moved, a ground branch wire is closed, including the wires 120 121, switch 122 123 124, wire 77 and relay 78, the armature of which is adapted to operate the locking device n n to release the arm 39. The switch 122 123 124 comprises 'the contact-pens 122 123 and plate 124, and said plate 124 is carried by the bar 32 and is moved by said bar into engagement with its contacts when said bar is moved to close the switch 40 41 42 and set the signals (3 and cl. Yet the closing of saidswitch 122 123 124 at such time subserves no other end than to place the ground branch wire 120 121 77 in condition to be operated by the trolley-engaging contactj. The armature 79 of the relay 78 is carried by an arm 80, pivoted at 81, and an upright arm 82 is rigidly secured to said arm 80, which has an arm 125 projecting laterally from it, adapted to engage the arm n of the locking device it. When the trolley-en gaging contact j is closed on the contact 3' the ground branch wire is closed and the relay '78 energized, and as its armature is attracted the laterally-projecting arm 125 will engage the arm n and by moving it will lift the arm n free from the pin n permitting the arm 39 to resume its normal position. The locking device n n is thereby restored to its normal position. As the arm 39 resumes its normal position the switch 40 41 42 is opened, thereby breaking the connection between the trolley-wire and signal-wire, and the set signals 6 and d will both be put out or restored to their normal condition and the switch 30 31 33 will be closed and also the switch 122 123 124 will be opened. At the opposite or entering end of the block it will be seen that as soon as said switch 40 11 4:2 is opened the electroma net 100 will be denergized and will cease to exert a pull upon its armature, and the pressure of the pin m on the locking device m being thereby relieved said locking device will resume its normal position. The set signals are therefore both restored to theirnormal condition and the locking devices are also both restored to their normal positions.
It instead of the car entering at the left hand end of. the block and operating the trolley-engaging contact h, as above described, it should enter the block at the opposite end, it would engage and operate the trolley-engaging contact 't', which is constructed the same as the trolley-engaging contacts h and j, and when said trolley-engaging contact '21 is operated the visual signals 0 and f will be set, and the locking devices n n and m m operated in a reverse manner to that previously described. The contact carrying arm '5 is connected byawire with the trolley-wire a, and the contact t is connected by a wire 72 with a contact-pen 73, normally bearing upon a plate 74, borne by the bar 32, and another contactpen 75, also normally bearing on said plate 74, is connected by a wire 76 with a wire 77, which leads to the ground or other return througha suitable resistance, said ground branch wire or tap including the relay 78,heretofore referred to. The arm 82, which is connected to the armature-carrying lever 80 of said relay78, alsoextends upward and bearsa bar 83, of insulating material,carrying'a plate 84, adapted to engage the contact-pens 86 when said arm 82 is moved by the attraction of the armature 79 of the relay 78. The contact-pen 85 is connected by a wire 87 with the signal-wire b and the contact-pen 86 is connected by a wire with a contact-pen 88, normally bearing upon a plate 89, borne by a bar 32, on which the contact-pen 90 also normally bears, and said contact-pen 90 is connected by a wire43 with the trolley-wire. Thus when the switch 88 SS) 90 is in its normal closed position and the switch 84 85 86 closed a connection is established between the trolley-wire a and signal-wire 5, whereby the current from the trolley-wire is conveyed to the signal-wire. Now when the trolley engaging contact 2' is operated the ground branch wire 70 72 76 77 is closed, the relay 78 energized, its armature attracted, and the switch 84 85 86 closed, and a path for the current established between the trolley-wire and signal-wire. At the opposite end of the block the current will pass over the ground branch wire 53', the switch 50 51 52 being normally closed, and the electromagnet 100, which is included therein, will be energized, its armature attracted, the arm 104, bearing the bar 5,
moved, opening the switch 50 51 52 and closing" a switch, by which'a connection is established between the trolley-wire and signal-wire. This switch consists of a plate on the bar 5, which when closed engages the contactpens 112 113. The contact-pen 113 is connected by a wire 114 with the signal-wire and includes the signal 0, and a contact-pen 112 is connected by a wire 115 to the wire 22, which is connected with the trolley wire. When the bar 5 is thus moved to close the switch 110 112 113 and open the switch 50 51 52, the pin m on the upright arm 104 will slip along beneath the arm 'm of the lockingdevice m m to a position back of the bend or shoulder m at which time said arm m will fall by gravity and lock the arm 104, and thereby hold the bar 5 with the switch 110 112 113 closed. At the entering end of the block (now the right-hand end) when the armature ot the relay 78 moves into its attracted position and closes the switch 84: 85 86 the arm 125, projecting from the arm 82, engages the arm n and lifts the arm n into a position opposite the pin n to thereby prevent the arm 39 from being moved by the electromagnet 35 when said magnet is energized, so as to hold the switch 30 31 33 closed and also prevent the signal e being operated at the entering end of the block, and as said switch 30 31 33 is held closed the ground branch wire 34:, including the electromagnet 35 and also including the signal f, will be held closed, and said electromagnet 35, pulling upon its armature, causes the pin n to bear hard upon the arm n, and thereby hold said arm in its elevated position. WVith the parts in this position the signals 0 andf will be set and the circuit will be as follows: wires 22, 115, switch 110 112 113, wire 114, including signal c, signal-wire I), switch 30 31 33, ground branch wire or tap 34, including the signal f.
When the car which enters the block atthe right-hand end and operates the trolley-engaging contact illeaves said block, it will engage and operate the trolley-engaging contact g, which is also constructed the same as the other trolley-engaging contacts. The contact-carrying arm g of said trolley-engaging contact is connected by a wire with the trolley-wire a, and the contact g is connected by a wire 131 with a contactpen 132, which engages a plate 133, carried by the bar 5, and said plate also engages the contactpen 134, which is connected by a wire with the wire 8, which leads to the ground through a suitable resistance and which includes the relay 9, heretofore described. The switch 132 133 134 is closed when the bar 5 is moved by the operation of the electromagnet 100, which occurs when the car enters the block and operates the trolley-engaging contact 2', so that when said car enters the block it sets the switch 132 133 134 in condition, so that the trolley-engaging contact g when operated 'may restore the set signals 0 and f to their normal condition and also restore ICC the locking devices 1% and a. When said trolley-engaging contact g is operated by the car leaving the block, the ground branch wire 130 131 135 will be closed, the relay 9 operated, the arm 0 operated by it to engage the arm of and lift the arm m free from the pin 912 thereby permitting the arm 104 to resume its normal position, and as said arm 104 resumes its normal position the switch 110 112 113 is opened and the connection between the trolley-wire and signal-wire broken and the signal 0 put out or restored to its normal condition, and as the connection with the trolley-wire is thus broken the signal f will be put out or restored to its normal condition and the electromagnet 35 will cease pulling upon its armature, and consequently the pressure of the pin 72 on the arm n will be relieved, permitting said arm n to fall by gravity to its normal position. Thus the set signals a andfwill be restored to their normal condition and the locking devices also restored to their normal positions.
From the foregoing it will be seen that an open ground-tap leads from the trolley-wire at each end of the block, each ground-tap having two branches, one of which contains the entering trolley-engaging contact and the other contains the leaving trolley-engaging contact, and that each branch also contains a switch, the switch in one branch being normally closed and the switch in the other branch being normally open, and that said ground-tap at each end of the block also contains a relay which serves as an operating device for the circuit for setting the signals when operated by the entering trolley-engaging contact and which serves as a restoring device for the abnormally disposed parts when operated by the leaving trolley-engaging contact, and, furthermore, that a normally closed ground-tap leads from the signalwire at each end of the block which contains a signal-setting magnet and one of the visual signalsas, for instance, the safety signal and also a switch by which it may be opened to prevent the safety-signal being set at the same time that the danger-signal is set at the same end of the block, and, furthermore, that two normally open branch wires are provided at each end of the block between the trolleywire and signal-wire, one of which contains a normally closed switch and also a normally open switch and serves as a current-taking wire for setting the signals, and the other contains a normally open switch and the dangersignal, and that a locking device is provided which possesses two essential functionsviz. when in one position it locks the danger-signal set if at the remote or leaving end of the block and when in its other position locks the armature of the signal-setting magnet from operating if at the entering end of the block.
When the entering trolley-engaging contact, as h, is closed, the ground-tap containing it and leading from the trolley-wire is closed, and the relay included in said groundtap operates and temporarily closes the current-taking branch between the trolley-wire and signal-wire and also operates the locking device which holds the signal-setting magnet at the entering end of the block from operating, thereby insuring the operation of the safety-signal and preventing the operation of the danger-signal at the entering end of the block, and when said current-taking branch is closed the signal-setting magnet included in the closed ground-tap from the signal-wire at the opposite end of the block operates and disconnects the ground-tap containingit from the signal-wire and also closes the branch wire between the trolley-wire and signal-wire containing the danger-signal and also closes a switch in the branch wire containing the leaving contact, so that the relay included in the ground-tap from said branch wire will be in condition to be operated by said leaving contact, and also opens aswitch in the branch wire containing the entering contact, so that the relay which is included in the ground-tap leading from said branch wire cannot be operated even if said entering contact should be closed accidentally or otherwise, and also opens a switch in the current-taking branch between the trolley-wire and signal-wire, so that when the relay is operated by the leaving contact to restore the locking device and other parts it will not operate the circuit of the signal-setting magnet at the opposite end of the block by closing the current-taking branch between the trolley-wire and signalwire, and also operates the locking device to lock the several switches in such position with the danger-signal set.
When the leaving trolley-engaging contact is closed, the ground-tap leading from the trolley-wire at the leaving end of the block is closed, and the relay included therein operates and restores the locking device to its nor mal position, thereby permitting the several switches to be restored to their normal positions, and as the switches are thus restored the branch wire, including the danger-signal, is opened, and the signal-wire being thereby disconnected from the trolley-wire no current passes over it, and the locking device at the entering end of the block will consequently be restored to its normal position.
I claim- 1. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire, a visual signal at each end of said block, a locking device for each visual signal, which when in one position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents operation of the signal, means at each end of said block, operated by the trolley, for setting the signal at the opposite or leaving end of the block and for operating the locking device to lock it set, and for also operating the locking device at the entering end of the block to prevent the operation of the signal thereat, substantially as described.
2. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire, a visual signal at each end of said IIO block, a locking device for each visual signal, which when in one position holds the signal set and When in another position prevents operation of the signal, means at each end of said block, operated by the trolley, for setting the signahat the opposite or leaving end of the block and for operating the locking device to lock it set, and for also operating the locking device at the entering end of the block to prevent the operation of the signal thereat, and means at each end of said block also operated by the trolley for restoring said set signal and also for restoring both locking devices, substantially as described.
3. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire, entering and leaving contacts at each end of said block operated by the trolley, a visnal signal at each end of said block,
a switch for each visual signalfor connecting it in circuit with the trolley-wire, a locking device for each switch which when in one position holds the switch with the visual signal set and when in another position prevents operation of said switch, means operated by either entering contact for operating the switch at the opposite end of the block to set the Visual signal at said remote end of the block and also for moving said switch into engagement with its locking device and for also moving the other locking device into position to prevent the operation of the switch at the entering end of the block, and means operated by either leaving contact for restoring both locking devices and said set signal, substantially as described.
4. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire, a visual signal at each end of said block, a locking device for each visual signal which when in one position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents operation of the signal, an eleetromagnet at each end of the block for setting the signal and for looking it set, means at each end of the block, operated by the trolley, for operating the electromagnet at the opposite or leaving end of the block to set and lock the signal and also operate the locking device at the entering end of the block to prevent the operation of the signal thereat, substantially as described.
5. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-Wire, a visual signal at each end of said block, a locking device for each visual signal which when in one position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents operation of the signal, an electromagnet at each end of the block for setting the signal and for locking it set, means at each end of the block, operated by the trolley, for
operating the electromagnet at the opposite or leaving end of the block to set and lock the signal and also operate the locking device at the entering end of the block to prevent the-operation of the signal thereat, and means at each end of said block, also operated by the trolley, for restoring said set signal and also for restoring both locking devices, substantially as described.
6. A trolley wire, a block or section of signal-Wire, a visual signal at each end of said block, a locking device for each visual signal which when in one position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents operation of the signal, an electromagnet at each end of the block for setting the signal and for locking it set, a relay at each end of the block, the circuit of which is operated by the trolley, for connecting the circnit of the eleetromagnet at the opposite end of the block with the trolley-wire and for also operating the locking device at the entering end of the block to prevent the operation of the signal thereat, substantially as described.
'7. A trolley-wire, a block or'section of signal-wire, a visual signal at each end of' said block, alocking device for each visual signal which when in one position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents operation of the signal, an electromagnet at each end of the block for setting the signal and for locking it set, a relay at each end of the block, entering and leaving contacts at each end of the block adapted to be operated by the troiley for operating the circuit of said relay, and means controlled by the armature of each relay for connecting the electromagnet at the opposite end of the block in circuit with the trolley-wire and for oper' ating the locking device at the entering end of the block to prevent the operation of the signal thereat, substantially as described.
8. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire normally disconnected from the trolley wire, and having a normally closed ground branch at each end, a visual signal as c, e at each end of said block included in a normally open connecting-wire between the trolley-wire and signal-wire, an electromagnet at each end for connecting the visual signal at the corresponding end of the block in circuit with the trolley-wire, a relay at each end of the block, means for connecting its circuit with the trolley-wire, and means operated by the armature of each relay for closing a connection between the signal-wire and trolley-wire and thereby connecting the electromagnet at the opposite end of the block in circuit with the trolley-wire through the signal-wire, substantially as described.
9. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire normally disconnected from the trol ley wire, and having a normally closed ground branch at each end, a visual signal as c, e at each end of said block included in a normally open connecting-wire between the trolley-Wire and signal-wire, an electromagnet at each end for connecting the visual signal at the corresponding end of the block in circuit with the trolley-Wire, and for opening the ground branch, a relay at each end of the block, means for connecting its circuit with the trolley-wire, and means operated by the armature of each relay for closing a connection between the signal-wire and trolley-wire and thereby connecting the electromagnet at the opposite end of the block in circuit with the trolley-wire through the signal-wire, substantially as described.
10. Atrolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire normally disconnected from the trolley wire, and having a normally closed ground branch at each end, a visual signal as c, e at each end of said block included in a normally open connecting-wire between the trolley-wire and signal-wire, a switch for closing said connecting-wire, an electromagnet at each end of the block for operating, the switch at the corresponding end of the block to connect the visual signal in circuit with the trolley-wire, a relay at each end of the block, a switch operated by the armature of each relay for closing a connection between the signal-wire and trolley-wire and thereby connecting the electromagnet at the opposite end of the block in circuit with the trolleywire through the signal-wire and circuit-operating devices for the circuits of said relays operated by the trolley, substantially as described.
, 11. Atrolley-n'dre, a block or section ofsignal-wire, a visual signal at each end of said block, a switch for connecting it in circuit with the trolley-wire, a locking device for each switch, which when in one position holds the switch with the signal set and when in another position prevents operation of said switch, an electromagnet at each end of the block for operating the switch at the corre sponding end of the block to connect the visual signal in circuit with the trolley-wire and for operating the locking device to lock said switch, a relay at each end of the block, a switch operated by the armature of each relay for connecting the electromagnet at the opposite or leaving end of the block in circuit with the trolley-wire through the signal-wire, and means also operated by the armature of each relay for operating the locking device at the entering end of the block, to prevent the operation of the switch thereat, substantially as described.
12. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire, two different visual signals at each end of the block, a locking device at each end of the block for one of said signals, which when in one position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents the operation of the signal, means at each end of the block, operated by the trolley, for setting one of the signals at the corresponding end of the block and for operating the looking device to prevent the operation of the other signal, and for setting one of the signals at the opposite end of the block and for operating the locking device to lock it set, substantially as described.
13. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire, two different visual signals at each end of the block, a locking device at each end of the block for one of said signals, which when in one position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents the operation of the signal, means at each end of the block, operated by the trolley, for setting one of the signals at the corresponding end of the block and for operating the looking device to prevent the operation of the other signal, and for setting one of the signals at the opposite end of the block and for operating the locking device to lock it set, and means at each end of the block, also operated by the trolley, for restoring said set signals and also for restoring both locking devices, substantially as described.
l t. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire norm ally disconnected from the trolley-wire, and having a normally closed ground branch at each end including a visual signal, another visual signal at each end of said block included in a normally open connecting-wire between the trolley-wire and signalwire, an electromagnet at each end of the block for closing said connecting-wire between the trolley-wire and signal-wire and thereby setting the visual signal at the corresponding end of the block and for opening a ground branch including the other visual signal, a relay at each end of the block, means for connecting its circuit with the trolley-Wire, and means operated by the armature of each relay for closing a connection between the trolley-wire and signal-wire and thereby cona necting the electromagnet at the opposite end of the block in circuit with the trolley-wire through the signal-wire, substantially as described.
15. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire normally disconnected from the trolley-wire,and having a normally closed ground branch at each end, a visual signal as c, e at each end of said block included in a normally open connectingwire between the trolley-wire and signal-wire, an electromag net at each end for connecting the visual signal at the corresponding end of the block in circuit with the trolley-wire, a relay at each end of the block, means for connecting its circuit with the trolley-Wire, and means operated by the armature of each relay for closing a connection between the signal-wire and trolley-wire and thereby connecting the electromagnet at the opposite end of the block in circuit with the trolley-wire through the signal-wire, and means also operated by the armature of each relay for preventing the electromagnet at the corresponding end of the block from operating, substantially as described.
16. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire normally disconnected from the trolley-wire,and havinga normally closed ground branch at each end including a visual signal another visual signal at each end of said block included in a normally open connecting-wire between the trolley-wire and signalwire, an electromagnet at each end of the block for closing said connecting-wire be- IIO wire, and means operated by the armature of each relay for closing a connection betweenthe trolley-wire and signal-wire and thereby connecting the electromagnet at the opposite end of the block in circuit with the tr0lleywire through the signal-wire, and means also operated by the armature of each relay for preventing the electromagnet at the corresponding end of the block from operating, substantially as described.
v 17. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire, two difierent visual signals at each end of the block, a switch at each end of the block for connecting one of said signals in circuit with the trolley-wire, and another switch at each end of the block for disconnecting the other signal, a locking device for one of said switches at each end of the block, which when in one position holds the switch with the signal set and when in another position prevents operation of the switch, an electromagnet at each end of the block for operating the switches at the corresponding end of theblock and operating the locking device to lock one of said switches with the signal set, a relay at each end of the block, a switch operated by the armature of each relay for connecting the el'ectromagnet at the opposite end of the block in circuit with the trolleywire through the signal-wire, and means also operated by the armature of each relay for operating the locking device to prevent the operation of the switches at the corresponding end of the block, substantially as described.
18. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire, a visual signal at each end of said block, a locking device for each visual signal which when in one position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents operation of the signal, means at each end of said block for setting the signal at the opposite or leaving end of the block and for operating the locking device to lock it set and for also operating the locking device at the entering endof the block to prevent the operation of the signal thereat, substantially as described.
19. A trolley-wire, a block or section of sig- 5 nalewire, a visual signal at each end of said block, a locking device for each visual signal which when in one-position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents operation of the signal, means at each end of said block for setting the signal at the opposite or leaving end of the block and for operating the locking device to lock it set and for also operating the locking device at the entering end of the block to prevent the operation of the signal thereat, and means at each end of said bloclifor restoring said set signal and also for restoring both looking devices, substantially as described.
20. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire, two different visual signals at each end of the block, a locking device at each end of the block for one of said signals, which when in one position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents the operation of the signal, means at each end of the block for setting one of the signals at the corresponding end of the block and for operating the locking device to prevent the operation of the other signal, and for setting one of the signals at the opposite end of the block and for operating the locking device to lock it set, substantially as described.
21. A trolley-wire, a block or section of signal-wire, two different visual signals at each end of the block, a locking device at each end of the block for one of said signals, which when in one position holds the signal set and when in another position prevents the operation of the signal, means at each end of the block for setting one of the signals at the corresponding end of the block and for operating the locking -device to prevent the operation of the other signal, and for setting one of the signals at the opposite end of the block and for operating the locking device to lock it set, and means at each end of the block for restoring said set signals and also for restoring both locking devices, substantially as described.
