CUTTER-BR FOR lVIOWERS OR REAPERS,
SECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,766, dated July 16, 1901. Application led January 26, 1901. Serial No. 44,869. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, EDWIN ROELIN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Belleville, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Cutter-Bar for Mowers or Reapers, of which the following is a specilication.
The invention r'elates to improvements in cutter-bars for mowers and rcapers.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of cutter-bars for mowers and reapers and to provide a simple and comparativelyinexpensive one in which the blades maybe readily reversed or changed from top to bottom, and vice versa, to adapt the cutter-bar for mowing or reaping.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a cutter-bar constructed in accordance with this invention, the knives or blades being arranged on the upper face of the cutter-bar. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cutter-bar, the blades being arranged at the lower face of the same. Fig. 4t is a longitudinal sectional view, the parts being arranged as illustrated in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 isa detail perspective View of one of the tieplates. Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the clips.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a series of knives or blades secured to a cutter-bar 2 by means of clips 3, which are provided with nuts 4L and which pass through registering perforations of the cutter-bar and the knives or blades. The knives or blades and the cutter-bar are provided with the usual perforations, so that the machinery employed iu the manufacture of the ordinary cutting apparatus may be used for making the presentinvention. The clips, which are approximately `lJ-shaped, extend through the knives or blades and the cutterbar, and the connecting portion 5 of the clips 3 has a flat inner face which fits against the lower face of the cutter-bar when the blades or knives are located at the upper face thereof, as indicated in Figs. l and 2 of the ao-l companying drawings, and the said connecting portion 5 extends across the spacee between the usual perforations` of the cutterbar and the knives or blades, and it reinforces the parts throughout substantially the entire Width of the said knives or blades.
When the machine is employed for mowing, the knives or blades are arranged at the upper face of the cutter-bar, and when the machine is used as a reaper it is necessary to place the knives or blades below the cutterbar, and it is usual for farmers to provide themselves with two sets of knives for this purpose.
The present invention is adapted to obviate the necessityof employing two sets of knives, and the blades or knives may be reversed and placed beneath the cutter-bar by simply removing the clips. The necessary strength and rigidity of the cutter-bar and the knives or blades are secured by means of tie-plates 6, which bridge the side edges of the knives or cutters and extend across the space between the adjacent clips, and the said tie-plates are arranged on the upper faces of the knives or blades when the latter are located above the cutter-bar, as clearly shown in Fig. l, and when the knives or blades are arranged beneath the cutter-bar the tie-plates are arranged at the lower faces of the said knives or blades. The tie-plates, which may be constructed of any suitable material, are thin and are provided at their ends with eyes or openings 7 for the reception of the sides of the clips. \Vhen the tie-plates are arranged at the Lipper faces of the knives or cutters, as shown in Fig. 1, they are engaged by the nuts 4, and when the blades or cutters are located beneath the cutter-bar the tieplates are interposed between the connecting portions 5 and the knives or cutters. By
this construction the knives or cutters are iirmly secured to the cutter-bar and are adapted to be readily reversed from one position to the other, and the construction also admits of the ready removal of a knife or cutter for the purpose of sharpening it or for replacing it in case of breakage by a new` IOO one. It will also be apparent that the removal and reversal of the knives or cutters may be readily eifected Without the aid of a skilled mechanic.
What I claim is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a cutter-bar having similar upper and lower faces and provided with perforations, the reversible knives or cutters adapted to be arranged at either the upper or the lower face of the cutter-bar, and provided With perforations registering with the said perforations, the approximately U- shaped clipspassin g through the perforations of the cutter-bar and the knives or cutters and having threaded ends, and nuts arranged on the threaded ends, said nuts and clips being adapted to secure the knives or cutters in either position, substantially as described.
2. In a device ofthe class described, the combination of a cutter-bar having perforations, the knives or cutters provided with perforations registering with the said perforations, thev approximately U-shaped clips supporting the knives or cutters and passing through the perforations and provided with nuts, and the tie-plates arranged at the sides of the knives or critters at the outer faces thereof and bridging the spaces between the clips and provided with eyes or openings to receive the same, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
EDWIN ROBLIN.-
