JULIAN KENNEDY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOSH PLATE.
SPEGIFiGATIONforming' partof Letters Patent N 0. 678,743, dated July 16, 1901.
Application filed April 13, 1901. Serial No. 55,717. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN KENNEDY, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Bosh-Plate, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation showing a portion of a furnacebosh with my improved plates secured in place, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
My invention relates to the bosh-plates employed for cooling the bosh-walls of blast-furnaces, and more particularly to the invention of my application, Serial No. 29,6a8, dated September 11, 1900, for bosh-plates and is designed to provide an improved construction of bosh-plate and furnace-bands, whereby the plate can be easily secured in place at any point along the band without perforating or otherwise weakening the band, and, further, to obtain a securing mechanism which will allow easy removal and replacing of the plates.
In the drawings, 3 represents the bosh of a blast-furnace having encircling bands 2.- The hollow bosh or cooling plates 4 are set in the masonry between the bands and are provided with upper flanges 5, which fit over the lower ends of the upper band, and to secure the bosh-plates in place I provide hook-bolts 6, whose stems extend through hollow bosses or posts 7 preferably formed integrally with the bosh-plates, the inner hooked ends 8 of these bolts engaging the inner face of the lower band. When the plates are to be inserted, the hook bolts are applied at the proper points, the plate is slipped into place, the stems of the bolts being threaded through it, and the nuts are then applied to the bolts and tightened to clamp the plate firmly in position.
In order to provide proper space at the joint of the band for the hook-bolts and the depending flange portions 9 of the plate, I provide inner and outer splice-bars 10 and 11, which are made sufficiently narrow to allow the hook-bolts and the flanges to properly seat upon the faces of the band.
When a plate is to be removed, the nuts are removed from the hook-bolts and hooked rods being applied to holes 12 in vertical ribs or webs 13 of the plate it can be pulled out, leaving the hook-bolts in place. A new plate may then be easily inserted and clamped. 1e and 15 represent the inlet and outlet connections for the cooling fluid.
The advantages of my invention result from the simplicity and effective securing action of the clamping means, from the peculiar arrangement of the joint, and from the fact that the plate can be clamped to the band at any desired point without the necessity of placing it where it will register with holes in the band.
The form of the plate, the clamping mechanism, and the band may be varied widely without departing from my invention.
I claim 1. A cooling-plate having a hook-bolt arranged to clamp the plate to a furnace-band; substantially as described.
2. A blast furnace having an encircling band, a bosh-plate set in its wall, and a hookbolt clamping the plate to the furnace-band; substantially as described.
3. A blast-furnace having a metal band surrounding its bosh, a cooling-plate set in its bosh-wall, and bolts extending through the plate and having inner hook portions engaging the inner face of the band, substantially as described.
4. A cooling-plate having a lateral flange arranged to fit against the outer face of a furnace-band, and a hook-bolt arranged to extend through the plate and engage the inner face of the band; substantiallyas described.
5. A blast-furnace having an encircling band with an inside splice-bar which is narrower than the band, a cooling-plate in the furnace-wall, and hook-bolts holding the plate bolts engaging the bosh-plate and the inner face of the band; substantially as described.
8. A blastfurnace having an encircling band, a cooling-plate in the furnace-Wall, and a gripping mechanism arranged to clamp the plate to the furnace-band at any point in its length, said gripping mechanism having an adjustable member exterior to the band; substantially as described.
9. A blast-furnace having encircling bands, a bosh-plate inserted between the bands, and
having lateral portions fitting against their outer faces, and hook-bolts removably clamp ing the plate to one of said bands; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JULIAN KENNEDY.
