Be it known that I, ROBERT M. DYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pump Connections, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. 4
My invention relates to a pump connection, my object being to provide a device whereby a pump-rod may be at will connected with either of two independent sources of powerhas, for instance, the reciprocating rod of a windmill and the handle or manual lever of a pump.
When pumps are employed in connection with windmills, it is usually desirable to have a manual lever or handle for the pump which can loe connected with the pump-rod to operate the pump manually at times when it is not desired to operate the windmill. It has been the usual practice to provide means whereby either the reciprocating rod of the windmill or the pump-handle can be connected with the .pump-rod; but these means are usually separate and distinct, and it frequently happens that both the reciprocating rod of the mill and the pump-handle are left connected with the pump at the same time, in which case, due to the difference in stroke of the two means of applying power, some part of the apparatus is broken, the `top or head of the pump-barrel being usually the part which gives way and is broken.
ln accordance with the present invention l provide a handle which is connected with the connecting devices of the pump-handle and the reciprocating rod in such manner that when the handle is moved into one position one of the two parts through which power is supplied is connected with the pump-rod, while when the handle is moved into the alternative position the other of the two parts is connected with the pump-rod. By this arrangement the connection of the pump-rod with lout one of the two operating parts is insured. I preferably mount the operatinghandle upon the pump-handle, so that when the mill-rod is connected with the pump-rod the operatinghandle remains at rest relatively to the mill-rod and may be readily grasped to disconnect the mill-rod and to connect the pump-handle.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the connecting devices. The pump-rod ct, which passesthrough the upper end of the pump-barrel a, is adapted to be connected either with the handle l) or with the reciprocating rod c, which is moved alternately up and down through the action of the windmill or other source of mechanical power. To the end of the handle or manual lever l) is secured a collar la", which surrounds the pump-rod a, the end of the handle being pivoted to the collar at b2. Upon the lower end of the rod c is carried a collar c', which surrounds the pump-rod d. A pin b3 is adapted to move in an opening b4, which extends transversely through the collar b, and this pin is adapted to pass through a hole a2 in the pump-rod at when it is desired to secure the handle to the pump-rod. The pin b3 carries a transverse 'opening b5, into which extends the en'd of a spring-rod b, which is provided with a coil hl and is secured at the opposite end in a hole provided in the lugbs, supported upon the collar b.V A slot b9 is provided, within which the end of the springrod is adapted to travel as the pin b3 is moved hack and forth in its bearing. A'oam d is journaled to rock within a bearing carried upon the sleeve b' and is provided with a square hole through which passes the operating-rod e, carrying upon the upper end the handle e. The rod e passes loosely through the opening in the cam d, and the cam is provided with an arc-shaped portion CZ', which is adapted, to bear against the arc-shaped wall cl2 to thus relieve the rod e of any strains that would otherwise be imposed thereon.

The edge of the cam is provided with a groove d3, wit-hin which the spring-rod b is adapted to rest, and when the handle e is operated to rock the rod e the cam cl is rocked into the position shown in Fig. 4;, in which case the locking-pin b3 is moved outward out of engagement with the pum p-rod a and the pumprod is thus detached from the sleeve U. When the rod is rocked to a position at right angles, the cam d is moved out of the path of the spring-rod D6 and the spring-rod moved inward, thereby carrying the locking-pin b3 inward to engage the hole a2 in the pumprod and thereby lock the pump-rod to the handle b. The sleeve c', connected with the rod c, operated by the mill, carries a pin c5, adapted to move in an opening c4, extending transversely through the sleeve c. A spring-rod c6 engages an opening in the locking-pin c3, whereby the locking-pin may be moved back and forth, and the spring-rod c(i is provided with a loop c7, which imparts resiliency thereto, and the opposite end is secured in a lug a8, carried upon the sleeve c. A cam f, similar to cam d, is mounted in a bearing carried by the sleeve c and is provided with a square hole through which passes the rod e. The camfis provided with an arc-shaped portion 3o f', similar to the part d of cam d, and this arcshaped portion is adapted to bear against the arc-shaped wall f2 to relieve the rod e of any strains. When the rod e occupies the position shown in Fig. 3, the cam is in position to maintain the locking-pin c3 in engagement with a hole provided through the pump-rod a, thereby looking the pump-rod to the sleeve c', and consequently to the rod c. When the rod e is rocked by means of the handle e', the cam engages the spring-rod c6 and moves the same outward, carrying with it the pin c3, and the pump-rod is thus disengaged. The cams d and fare mounted upon the rod c at right angles to each other, so that when the cam d is in position to withdraw its locking-pin the cam f will be in position to insert the locking-pin belonging thereto, and vice versa. The rocking of therod e into one position thereof serves to connect the pump-rod with one of the operating devices and to disconnect the same Vfrom the other. In the present instance the pins Z910 bu are provided above and below the sleeve b', whereby the rod e will be carried up and down with the sleeve b', while the rod e passes freely through the cam carried by the sleeve c. The rod e may, however, be mounted upon either of the sleeves b or d, the rod being free to move through the cam of the other sleeve.
When it is desired to connect the pump-rod with the windmill, the handle e is moved to rock the rod e into the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, in which case the pin c3 will be carried into engagement with the hole in the pump-rod, while the pin b3 will be moved out of engagement with the pump-rod, and the pump-rod will therefore travel up and down with the rod c and will move freely within the sleeve b', secured to the handle b. When it is desired to disconnect the pump from the windmill and to place the same in position to be operated by the handle b, the handle e' is moved to rock the rod e to the alternative position, and camf is thus moved outward and cam el is moved inward, and pin b3 is thereby moved into engagement with the pump-rod and pin c3` is moved out of engagement therewith. This transfer of the connection from one of the operating devices to the other may be made as Well while the windmill is operating the pump as when the pump is at rest.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a pump-rod, of a pump-handle and a mill-rod, means for connecting said pump-rod to said pump-handle, and for releasing said mill-rod, and vice versa, and an operating-handle separate from and independent of the pump-handle for actuating said connecting means and carried on said pump-handle and adapted not to partake of the motion of the mill-rod, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a pump-rod,..of a pump-handle and a mill-rod, means for connecting said pump-rod to said handle and for releasing said mill-rod, and vice versa, and an operating-handle separate from and independent of the pump-handle for actuating said connecting means and adapted to be maintained in a stationary position while the pump-rod is connected with the mill-rod, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a pump-rod, of a pump-handle and a mill-rod, means for connecting the saidv pump-rod to said pumphandle and for releasing said mill-rod, and vice versa, and an operating rod or handle parallel to the pump-rod carried upon the pump-handle and guided by the mill-rod and rotating about its longitudinal axis and adapted to actuate said connecting means, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a pump-rod, of a pump-handle and a mill-rod, a pair of pins, one adapted to be inserted to connect the pump-rod and the handle and the other adapted to be inserted to connect the pump-rod and the mill-rod, a rocking rod'extending substantially parallel to saidpump-rod, a pair of cams carried thereon,and mechanism between each of said cams and the respective pins whereby the rocking rod in one position inserts the pin which connects the pump-rod with the pumphandle and in another position inserts the pin which connects the pump-rod with the millrod, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a pump-rod, of a pump-handle, the operating-rod of a windmill, a pair of locking-pins one for locking the pump-rod to the pump-handle and the other for locking the pump-rod to the reciprocating rod, a yieldingly-pressed rod or lever IOO IIO
for each of said locking-pins for'moving the same into the locking position, a cam foreach of said locking-pins for moving the same out of theoperative position, and a single operating-handle in addition to the elements above enumerated connected with both of said cams whereby one of the locking-pins may be inserted While the other is Withd raWn, substantially as described.

The combination with a pump-rod, of a pump-handle and the reciprocating rod, of a windmill, a pair of locking-pins for connecting the pump-handle and the reciprocating rod respectively to the pump-rod, a `vieldinglypressed lever provided in connection with each locking-pin for moving the same into the locking position, a pair of cams one engaging each of said spring-pressed levers for withdrawing the locking-pins, and a single operating rod or part upon which said cams are mounted to rotate therewith While partaking of a relative movement along the axis of the rod, substantially as described.
7. The combination With the pump-rod a of the pump-handle b and the reciprocating rod c, the sleeves b c' and the locking-pins b3 c3, the yieldingly-pressed levers h6 c6 for inserting the locking-pins, the cams d andf lplaced at an angle for withdrawing the locking-pins, and the operating-rod e'tor rotating the cams, substantially as described.
8. The combination with a pump-rod, of a pump-handle and a mill-rod adapted to be separately connected with said pump-rod, a pin for connecting said pump-rod with said pump-handle,a second pin for connecting said pump-rod to said mill-rod, a pair of cams for controlling said pins and an operating rod or handle rotating about its longitudinal. axis and adapted to actuate said cams to connect the pump-rod With the pump-handle and release the mill-rod, and vice versa, substantially as described.
9, The combination with a pump-rod, of a pump-handle and a mill-rod adapted to be separately connected with said pump-rod, a pin for connecting said pump-rod with said pump-handle, a pin for connecting said pumprod with said mill-rod, a pair of cams for controlling said pins, and an operating rod or handle rotating about its longitudinal axis and carried upon said pump-handle and adapt ed to move relatively to said mill-rod and adapted in one position to connect said pumprod With the pump-handle and in another position to connect said pumpmod With the millrod, substantially as described.
