Description

11w. & W. w; BRIERLEY. I Safety Locking Railway Switch.
No.- 231,648. Patented Aug. 31, 1880,
fibenons.
IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK W. BRIERLEY AND WALTER W. BRIERLEY, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNORS F ONE-FOURTH OF THEIR RIGHT TO H. JEN
KINS, OF SAME PLACE.
SAFETY-LOCKING RAILWAY-SWITCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,648, dated August 31, 1880. Application filed March 30, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK W. BRI- ERLEY and WALTER W. BRIERLEY, residents of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans,
and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Self-Lockin g Railway-Switches; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being I0 had to the annexed drawing, makinga part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improve ments, whereby the operating and locking of the rails is effectually accomplished by means of a single lever and rod. 7 p
The nature of the invention will be readily understood by referring to the accompanying drawing, wh'ereon A A represent the movable or switch rails, which are connected in the ordinary manner by means of stretchers b b. The rails c c are secured to head-blocks d d, the inner portions of which are provided with level bearings for the switches to slide upon. At suitable distances from the rails these bearings are provided with vertical pins 6 c, on which are fitted the operatinglockingcams F F, having arms g g, that are pivoted to a coupling-bar, H, the latter being connected, either directly or through an interme- 50 diate connect-ingrod, 7c, and bell-crank l, with an arm, at, of the target-staff.
The cams are operated by means of a lever,
n, that is keyed or otherwise secured to the target-staff, and which is moved over a semicircular track, 0.,hlltti3 is provided with perfo- 3 5 rations p, to enable the same to be secured, by means ofa pin, t, in either of its extreme positions.
We do not desire to confine ourselves to the use of any particular style of stand, as it is evident that any of the frames at present known or used may be employed in lieu of the one shown in the drawing; but,
Having described our invention, which is applicable to the butt-rail as well as the splitrail switch, what We do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a railway-switch, the movable rails thereof, actuated in either direction by means of a cam, said cams hearing directly upon the 0 rails and being pivoted to a suitable connecting-rod, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the track and movable rails connected by bars I) b, the actuatingcams F F, bearing directly upon the rails, bar H, and shifting mechanism, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names.
FREDERICK W. BRIERLEY. WALTER W'. BRIERLEY.
In presence of- J. G. HUBBELL, P. J. FINNEY.
